Bing Crosby Nominations Promises Deep Field Of Sprinters At Del Mar

Seventeen horses, encompassing virtually all the top sprinters on the West Coast, have been nominated to Saturday's $300,000 Grade 1 Bing Crosby Stakes, assuring that the field will be a stellar one when it is set and post positions are drawn on Wednesday.

Trainer Mark Glatt finished first and third in the 2020 Crosby with Collusion Illusion and Law Abidin Citizen. He has those two plus Dr. Schivel nominated and said Sunday he might run all three.

Other marquee speedsters on the nomination list include 2020 Pat O'Brien winner C Z Rocket for Peter Miller; the trio of Ax Man, Eight Rings, and Gamine from the Bob Baffert barn; graded stakes winner Flagstaff from the John Sadler stable; and the double-quick Cal-bred Brickyard Ride out of the Craig Lewis barn.

Sadler said Flagstaff will skip the Bing Crosby and instead go in the seven-furlong Pat O'Brien here on August 28.

Baffert said the 4-year-old filly Gamine, a winner of six graded stakes in her last seven starts – four of them Grade 1s – is more likely to continue competing against her own gender elsewhere than take on males in the Bing Crosby.

But Gamine is one of 11 older fillies and mares nominated to next Sunday's Clement L. Hirsch, as is stablemate As Time Goes By. A 4-year-old daughter of Baffert-trained Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, As Time Goes By is one of three stakes winners at Santa Anita that are possibles for the Hirsch, a 1 1/16-mile main track event that usually determines the top older filly or mare of the meeting.

The others are Venetian Harbor and Warren's Showtime.

The 6-furlong Bing Crosby is a “Win & You're In” qualifier for the $2 million Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Sprint at Del Mar on November 6. The Clement L. Hirsch is likewise designated for the $2 million Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Distaff that same day.

Moquett ‘Couldn’t Be More Pleased’ With Champion Whitmore Ahead Of July 31 Vanderbilt

Reigning Champion Sprinter Whitmore registered his final serious breeze Friday in preparation for the Grade 1, $350,000 Alfred G. Vanderbilt on July 31 at Saratoga Race Course.

The 8-year-old gelding, who won the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Sprint in November at Keeneland, went a half-mile in 48.78 seconds over a fast main track at the Spa, 12 days after travelling the same distance in a swift 47.21 seconds.

Trained by Ron Moquett, Whitmore has amassed more than $4.4 million in lifetime earnings through a record of 41-15-13-4, which includes seven graded stakes victories at four different racetracks. Prior to the Breeders' Cup Sprint, his only other Grade 1 victory took place in the 2018 Forego at Saratoga, where he defeated subsequent Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile and Pegasus World Cup winner City of Light.

Whitmore was second in last year's Vanderbilt, finishing 1 ¼ lengths to Volatile ahead of a distant seventh in the Forego over a sloppy track.

“He went very well this morning,” Moquett said. “I told the rider I wanted 48 or 49 and he did it, and did it the right way so I'm very pleased. He's training well, doing well, and I like the way he's running. I couldn't be more pleased with how everything is right now. He likes the surface at Saratoga. It's a good track and it seems like he's settled right in.”

Whitmore has finished in the money in all three starts this year, beginning with a close second by a neck to C Z Rocket in the Hot Springs at Oaklawn, a race he won from 2017-20. Following another second beaten two lengths in the Grade 3 Count Fleet Sprint at the Arkansas oval in April, Whitmore was third by a head in the Grade 1 Churchill Downs on May 1.

Whitmore has won at six different racetracks dating back to November 2015 at Churchill Downs, capturing his debut by 7 ¼ lengths en route to three graded stakes placings at Oaklawn Park while on the Kentucky Derby trail.

While Whitmore is still going strong, most of his previous competitors from 2016 have gone off to the breeding shed. He finished second to 2021 freshman sire Cupid in the Grade 2 Rebel at Oaklawn Park two starts prior to finishing 19th in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby, which was won by Nyquist – last year's leading first crop stallion.

“The funny thing is, I have a colt by Cupid, and Whitmore ran against Cupid in the Rebel as a 3-year-old,” Moquett said. “We're so grateful that he's with us and we're always amazed at the outpouring of affection and support for the horse. It's great to see how many people like and cheer for him.”

Moquett said Whitmore thrives at Oaklawn, where has posted nine wins, but has the ability to take his game on the road.

“He likes Oaklawn because that's where we're at when he comes back off his break. He always does well then,” Moquett said. “I know he likes Keeneland and Churchill and Saratoga. I don't know which one he likes the best, but he likes a fast track.”

Moquett said a repeat win in the Breeders' Cup Sprint is the main objective with the possibility of using the Grade 2, $250,000 Phoenix on October 8 at Keeneland as a springboard. Whitmore captured the 2017 Phoenix by a nose over Awesome Banner.

Jockey Ricardo Santana, Jr. has piloted Whitmore 17 times, including his last three starts, and will have the call for the Vanderbilt. He piloted last year's winner Volatile.

After ‘Dog-Fight’ Triumph Over Firenze Fire, Mind Control To Target Forego

Rick Sacco of Red Oak Stable, which owns Mind Control in partnership with Madaket Stables, said the multiple Grade 1-winner was bright eyed and happy on Monday following a redemption victory in Sunday's Grade 2, $250,000 John A. Nerud at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y., where he denied horse-for-course Firenze Fire an eighth victory over Big Sandy.

Making his first start for Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher, the Stay Thirsty bay ended an 0-for-6 slump, battling to the outside of Firenze Fire down the backstretch, ultimately getting the better of his foe by a head. Mind Control, who was reunited with Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez, replicated a career-best 99 Beyer Speed Figure garnered in his previous victory in the Grade 3 Tom Fool in March 2020 at Aqueduct.

Mind Control arrived at the Nerud, a “Win and You're In” qualifier to the Breeders' Cup Sprint in November at Del Mar, off a close seventh in the Grade 1 Churchill Downs on May 1 for his former conditioner Gregg Sacco. Mind Control finished second to Mischevious Alex in his 2021 bow in the Grade 1 Carter on April 3 at the Big A.

Sacco said the seven-furlong Grade 1, $600,000 Forego on August 28 at Saratoga Race Course would likely be the next target. Both of Mind Control's previous Grade 1 scores came in seven-furlong events at the Spa, capturing the 2018 Hopeful and 2019 H. Allen Jerkens.

“The Forego is our plan,” Sacco said. “When the horse was turned over to Todd, I told him that we wanted to point to yesterday's race. I knew that would give him enough time to acclimate to Todd's program.

“He came out of it awesome,” Sacco added. “He jogged super this morning and he was bright eyed, so now he'll ship up to Saratoga, get freshened and they'll get him ready for the Forego.”

Mind Control, bred in Kentucky by Red Oak Stable, is out of the Lightnin N Thunder mare Feel That Fire.

“The win means so much to Red Oak because we own the mare Feel That Fire, and we own her mother [Ubetwereven] as well,” said Sacco. “We have such nice foals out of these two mares in the pipeline, so when Mind Control wins, it means a lot to the operation.”

Sacco said Mind Control encountered considerable barriers during his 2020 campaign, including a couple of sloppy tracks. He was a distant sixth and eighth over off going in the Grade 1 Runhappy Carter and last year's Forego, respectively.

“For him to win after so many losses in a row was great. It was a tough campaign last year,” Sacco said. “You train for so long and hit a couple of sloppy tracks. After the first time he ran in the slop, he disliked it. At Saratoga, it was slop again. Two times in his career, he had really sloppy tracks, but you're always working around the weather and working around getting them in the best possible condition. Last year was very tough. We didn't have the type of campaign we wanted to have.”

Sacco said the post-position draw may have played in favor of Mind Control, who exited post 2 Sunday to the outside of Firenze Fire.

“Todd, John and myself knew that Firenze Fire was going to go from the rail,” said Sacco. “There were others that showed good speed, but not of our quality. Johnny said he wasn't going to let the horse get away from him, and that if we got away clean, we were going to apply the pressure. He's a fighter and he doesn't lose those dog-fight type of races.”

Mind Control has a 2-year-old half-sister by Mineshaft named Goddess of Fire, who also will be trained by Pletcher.

“She breezed this morning at Saratoga in what was her second breeze for Todd,” Sacco said. “She has a good foundation underneath her and is a beautiful filly. Mind Control is a medium sized horse and will make a good stallion prospect. He is very correct and well-balanced. She's a great big filly, so I'm sure Todd will take his time with her.”

Despite the differences in conformation, Sacco said Mind Control and Goddess of Fire both display the same professional demeanor.

“Mind Control is very straight forward. You tack him up, he wants to go do his business and not be fooled around with,” Sacco said. “The family is straightforward in the same manner. The whole time we had her on the farm, she just wanted to train and do her business. Both are very businesslike.”

Feel That Fire has a yearling by Candy Ride and is currently in foal to Uncle Mo.

Firenze Fire Chases Breeders’ Cup Berth In Sunday’s John A. Nerud

Through a 33-race career, nine-time graded-stakes winner Firenze Fire has asserted his talent over seven different racetracks, but it's no secret that the veteran son of Poseidon's Warrior has an affinity for Belmont Park. He will seek an eighth triumph over Big Sandy on Sunday in the 13th running of the Grade 2, $250,000 John A. Nerud going seven furlongs for 4-year-olds and upward.

The John A. Nerud, a “Win and You're In” qualifier to the Grade 1, $2 million Breeders' Cup Sprint in November at Del Mar, will be televised live on NBCSN as part of a show airing from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern.

The event is named in honor of the late Hall of Famer whose 44-year tenure as a trainer included campaigning fellow Hall of Fame inductees Dr. Fager, Gallant Man, and Ta Wee. Following his retirement in 1978, Nerud assisted John Gaines in developing the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships, for whom he was marketing committee chairman in its early years. As an owner, Nerud campaigned 1985 Champion Turf Horse Cozzene as well as influential stallion Fappiano. Nerud passed away in August 2015 at the age of 102.

Mr. Amore Stable's Firenze Fire, trained by Kelly Breen, brags a consistent 10-7-1-0 record at Belmont Park and lifetime earnings of nearly $2.5 million. The accomplished 6-year-old sprinter has won both of his starts this season, notching repeat stakes conquests over the local strip in the Grade 3 Runhappy on May 8 and Grade 2 True North on June 4. In the latter, Firenze Fire battled down the backstretch to the inside of multiple graded stakes-winner Flagstaff through swift opening fractions, but kicked clear of his foe to notch a 1 ½-length victory.

The True North came just minutes before the track was deluged with rainfall. Firenze Fire was beaten by double-digit lengths in his three starts over a track rated sloppy.

“That was heart attack material because by the time we got back to the test barn it was a downpour,” Breen's assistant John Attfield said. “Someone was watching out for us that day.”

Owner Ron Lombardi expressed a similar sense of relief regarding the weather.

“It was unbelievable, that was great,” said Lombardi. “We would have run anyway, but at that point there wasn't much you could do. What a godsend that the rain held off.”

Firenze Fire commenced his love affair with Big Sandy in his fourth career start when capturing the Grade 1 Champagne in October 2017 over subsequent Champion 2-Year-Old Good Magic. He has won at least one stakes race at Belmont Park for the past five seasons, registering a career-best 107 Beyer Speed Figure during his sophomore campaign when returning to Belmont with a nine-length romp in the 2018 Grade 3 Dwyer.

Following a successful 2019 campaign, which included a victory in the Runhappy at Belmont, Firenze Fire made his debut for Breen in the Grade 1 Runhappy Carter in June 2020, finishing a distant fourth prior to capturing the Grade 2 True North and the Grade 2 Vosburgh at Belmont three starts later.
After closing the curtain on his 5-year-old season when third in the Grade 3 Mr. Prospector on December 19 at Gulfstream Park, Firenze Fire remained in training but did not start until capturing the Grade 3 Runhappy on May 8 two starts ago.

“One of the biggest advantages of this year was for the first time in his career, he had five months off. We gave him the winter off without running him, he was still training a little bit, but he's come back great,” Attfield said.

Elsewhere, Firenze Fire has conveyed his aptitude against graded stakes company at Saratoga, Parx Racing and Laurel Park. Following last year's Grade 2 Vosburgh triumph, he finished a good third to accomplished sprinters Whitmore and C Z Rocket in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Sprint on November 6 at Keeneland.

With a start in the 2021 Breeders' Cup Sprint in mind, Lombardi is hopeful that Firenze Fire can maintain his winning form throughout this season. A start in this year's Sprint would be a fifth straight Breeders' Cup appearance for Firenze Fire.

“I think he's at the top of his game at the moment,” Lombardi said. “He's always had the MO where he comes out of the race unbelievably. After a race he's eating, perky and he doesn't miss a beat. The next morning he's ready to go. Typically horses of his caliber wait more than four weeks, but he recovered so greatly. He didn't miss a beat, but he did take some time off in the winter. He has two stakes under his belt so far this year and it will be his fifth year in a row going to the Breeders' Cup.”

Firenze Fire's name is influenced by the Italian word for the city of Florence, Italy.

“My daughter designs shoes and has them made in Italy,” Lombardi explained. “We were over there six years ago in Florence, and I needed to name the horse. At the time, Tom Hanks was filming the movie Inferno in Florence so that's where the 'fire' comes from.”

Lombardi said owning a horse like Firenze Fire has been a dream come true for a lifelong racing fan.

“Especially being a homebred makes it that much more special,” Lombardi said. “It's been great. It really is a dream come true. My dad owned a horse in 1948 had it for a year and a half. All my aunts and uncles every Saturday went to Monmouth.”

A Florida homebred, Firenze Fire is out of the Langfuhr mare My Every Wish, whose other progeny include stakes-placed Firenze Freedom as well as a full-brother to Firenze Fire in Just Leo, who is training towards a July debut.
Jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. has been aboard for nine of Firenze Fire's 14 lifetime victories and returns to the irons from the inside post.

Dual Grade 1-winner Mind Control will make his debut for Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher seeking a return to winning form.

Owned by Red Oak Stable and Madaket Stable, Mind Control has gone winless in eight starts since capturing the Grade 3 Tom Fool last March at Aqueduct for former trainer Gregg Sacco.

Red Oak Stable racing manager Rick Sacco said he is hoping to see the son of Stay Thirsty recapture his previous form which earned him elusive Saratoga triumphs in the Grade 1 Hopeful in 2018 and the Grade 1 H. Allen Jerkens Memorial in 2019.

“We went through a few races where he didn't win, and we knew there were no races for him at Monmouth,” Sacco said. “We just thought it was a change of scenery that would do him some good. Todd is on our team, and he has horses for us. My brother Gregg won him a couple of Grade 1 races and did a fantastic job, but we figured we would change things up, send the horse over to Todd and try to win a race with him. It's a hard lens to look through to move a horse. We're just trying to get him back on track. He's sound and training super.”

Mind Control and Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez will vie for their sixth stakes triumph together from post 2.

Trainer Rob Atras earned his first overall graded stakes triumph when American Power won the Grade 3 Toboggan on January 30 at Aqueduct, and will seek his first Belmont graded stakes-triumph when saddling the son of Power Broker for the Nerud.

Owned by Sanford Goldfarb, Irwin Goldfarb and the Estate of Ira David, American Power replicated his winning form at seven furlongs when capturing the Caixa Eletronica on March 20 following the Toboggan. Last out, he finished third in the Grade 2 True North.

American Power has placed in six of seven starts since being claimed by Atras last July.

Breaking from post 3, American Power will be ridden by Joel Rosario.

Three Diamonds Farm's Doubly Blessed will see a cutback in distance from 1 1/16 miles when seeking a sixth career win for trainer Mike Maker. The son of Empire Maker out of graded stakes winner Via Villaggio earned a career best 100 Beyer Speed Figure last out in an allowance optional claiming tilt on May 29 over a sloppy and sealed track at Belmont Park, which he won by 1 ½ lengths.

Jockey Luis Saez, who was aboard for his last out triumph, retains the mount from post 7.

Rounding out the field are Top Seed [post 4, Jose Ortiz], Wicked Trick [post 5, Jose Lezcano] and Three Technique [post 6, Manny Franco].

The John A. Nerud is carded as the finale on Sunday's 10-race Independence Day program. First post is 1 p.m. Eastern.
