Morny Date For Quick Suzy

G2 Queen Mary S. winner Quick Suzy (Ire) (Profitable {Ire}) will reappear in the G1 Prix Morny at Deauville on Aug. 22, with connections deciding to bypass Sunday's G1 Phoenix S. at The Curragh.

Trained by Gavin Cromwell, Quick Suzy was purchased privately by the American-based Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners after breaking her maiden at The Curragh on May 3. Joseph Burke, who brokered that deal, said, “She worked well at The Curragh on Tuesday. But having spoken to Gavin, [jockey] Gary Carroll and Aron Wellman–the head of Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners–we figured, having given her a holiday following Royal Ascot, that we'd give her another couple of weeks and aim for the Prix Morny instead. She gets an extra pound from the colts in Deauville as well-four pounds as opposed to three pounds at The Curragh–and fillies have a very good record in the Morny. She's already group-placed in Ireland, a group winner at Royal Ascot and the joint-highest rated 2-year-old in Ireland, so it would be great to get some Group 1 form in France on her CV next.”

Quick Suzy's key end-of-season goal is the GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint at Del Mar in November.

“Ultimately, her season revolves around the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint at Del Mar and we're working back from there,” added Burke. “This race [the Morny] fits in nicely, and we might take in the Cheveley Park then, all being well, before going to Del Mar.

“We're very lucky to have her. She's brought a lot of joy to all of us already, and we hope the second half of her season will be just as rewarding.”

Golden Pal Confirmed For Nunthorpe

Trainer Wesley Ward reports star sprinter Golden Pal (Uncle Mo) to be firing on all cylinders ahead of an intended tilt at the G1 Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe S. at York Aug. 20.

Last season's GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint winner made a spectacular return to action in the GIII Quick Call S. at Saratoga last month and Ward has now given the green light to a trip to the Knavesmire, with Frankie Dettori in line for the ride.

Ward told PA Sport: “He had an unbelievable breeze on Saturday at Arlington Park (4f on soft turf in :51.80) and we're headed for the Nunthorpe. Straight after his last race we really didn't know what direction we were going. There was the option of waiting a couple more weeks for the G1 Flying Five (at the Curragh Sept. 12), but he's doing great and he's scheduled to leave Aug. 13.

“I had a talk with Paul Shanahan (of Coolmore) and he had a talk with Mr. Magnier, Mr. Smith and Mr. Tabor (owners). The Nunthorpe is kind of a stallion-maker race and carries a lot of weight at this time of year.

“He's got a direct flight from Indianapolis to Stansted and then off we'll go. Frankie is going to ride and we're excited.”

Golden Pal's task at York has, on paper at least, been made easier by the retirement of dual Nunthorpe hero Battaash (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), a horse Ward admits he is full of admiration for.

“It's always a shame for racing every time a great old warrior like that is retired,” Ward said. “I have certainly been a big fan of his and have watched him for all these years. He got a big following, so any time the curtain is pulled down it's never good for racing. I wouldn't want to be taking him on when he's breathing fire, that's for sure!”

Nunthorpe, Flying Five On The Radar For Golden Pal After Saratoga Win

After returning victorious in Saratoga's Opening Day Quick Call, trainer Wesley Ward said Golden Pal will take his talents overseas for his next engagement.

A winner of his last three starts, Golden Pal was in command throughout the entire 5 ½-furlong journey for sophomores and was wrapped up by jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. in the final sixteenth of a mile, garnering a career-best 95 Beyer for the three-length win.

Ward said he plans on shipping Golden Pal back to Keeneland in the next couple of days to prepare for a possible start in either the Group 1 Nunthorpe on Aug. 20 at York in England or the Group 1 Flying Five on Sept. 12 at the Curragh in Ireland. Both races offer the winner an expenses-paid berth to the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint in November at Del Mar.

“I was planning on going this morning, but he ran such a big effort I'll keep him here for a couple of days,” Ward said. “Right now, when he's this good and you want to try and make him a sire, you have to hook into a Group 1 somewhere.”

Ward said the Nunthorpe might be coming up a little sooner than ideal.

“It's close together, but when you're talking about going over to England and off a layoff, I like to give them some time so I'm not 100 percent certain he'll go to the Nunthorpe,” Ward said. “I would say, looking at his energy and his workouts, that will determine whether it's there or if he'll run in Ireland. I've never run one in Ireland.”

Both the Nunthorpe and the Flying Five are contested at five furlongs, a half-furlong shorter than the Quick Call.

“He's much better going five-eighths,” Ward said.

Golden Pal, owned by Coolmore partners Michael Tabor, Mrs. John Magnier, Derrick Smith and Westerberg, was a dazzling 3 ½-length winner of the Skidmore at Saratoga last summer before capturing the Grade 2 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint at Keeneland. He arrived at the Quick Call off eight months rest.

Golden Pal's next start will not be his first international endeavor. In his second outing, he was second beaten a neck in the Group 2 Norfolk last June at Royal Ascot.

While Golden Pal takes his show on the road, Ten Broeck Farm's five-time stakes winner Kimari will target the Grade 2, $200,000 Honorable Miss on July 28 at Saratoga.

The daughter of Munnings captured the Grade 1 Madison on April 3 at Keeneland last out, defeating graded stakes-winners Estilo Talentoso, Bell's the One and Sconsin.

The 4-year-old bay filly, who has never finished worse than fourth in 10 career starts, seeks a second stakes victory at the Spa. She earned her first stakes triumph when taking the Bolton Landing in August 2019.

Golden Pal Kicks Off Sophomore Season at the Spa

Golden Pal (Uncle Mo), off since posting a visually impressive score in the GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint at Keeneland Nov. 6, returns to action in Thursday's opening day GIII Quick Call S. at Saratoga.

Last term's narrow G2 Norfolk S. runner-up at Royal Ascot June 19 and ultra-sharp Skidmore S. winner at the Spa Aug. 21 was recently purchased privately by Mrs. John Magnier, Michael B. Tabor, Derrick Smith and Westerberg from breeder Randall Lowe. He is the 1-2 morning-line favorite.

“He's doing really well. We're excited about him,” trainer Wesley Ward. “I think he'll be the best horse I ever had, but we'll see if it comes out that way. He does things in the mornings that are just so impressive. He's just an immensely talented horse and we're looking forward to getting his season started here at Saratoga on Opening Day. Hopefully, that leads into the Breeders' Cup at the end of the year.”

'TDN Rising Star' Jaxon Traveler (Munnings), first or second in all seven of his career starts, tries grass for the first time. He enters following runner-up finishes in the GIII Chick Lang S. at Pimlico May 15 and Woodstock S. over the Woodbine synthetic June 20.
