Breeders’ Cup Launches “En Vivo” Spanish Language Coverage Of Select Challenge Series Races

The Breeders' Cup has launched “Breeders' Cup En Vivo,” an all-Spanish digital series covering three upcoming Breeders' Cup Challenge Series: 'Win and You're In' races. Each broadcast will take place from locations representing the three regional divisions established this year for the Challenge Series. “Breeders' Cup En Vivo” will launch with the GI Ballerina S. on Sunday, Aug. 28 at Saratoga Race Course for the East Division.

The Breeders' Cup “En Vivo” team, established in 2021, will return this year with co-hosts Claudia Spadaro, Darwin Vizcaya, Emanuel Aguilar, Roberto Rodriguez and Annise Montplaisir–who also produces the show. Each broadcast will air live on Breeders' Cup's Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube Channels.

The 2022 “Breeders' Cup En Vivo” Schedule includes:

Aug. 28: GI Ballerina, Saratoga, East Division – GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint
Sept. 3: GI TVG Pacific Classic, Del Mar, West Division – GI Longines Breeders' Cup Classic

2022 Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series Features 82 Qualifying Races

The 2022 Breeders' Cup Challenge Series: Win and You're In schedule will feature 82 qualifying races in 11 countries, Breeders' Cup announced Tuesday. Winners, as usual, will receive automatic qualifying positions, and fees paid, into a corresponding race in the 2022 Breeders' Cup World Championships.

Horses from around the globe will be qualifying through the Win and You're In program for the 39th Breeders' Cup World Championships, consisting of 14 Grade 1 races and purses and awards totaling $31 million. This year's Championships will be held at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Ky., on Nov. 4-5. The first U.S. Breeders' Cup Challenge Series race of the year will be the GI Shoemaker Mile S. at Santa Anita Park May 30. The Breeders' Cup Challenge Series, now in its 15th year, will be hosted at many of the world's premier racetracks in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, England, France, Ireland, Japan, Peru, South Africa, and the United States.

The 2022 series in the U.S. has been restructured into a regional qualifying program to balance divisional competition across the country. In 11 of the 14 race divisions, there will be one Breeders' Cup Challenge Series race per region, identified as East, Midwest, and West. Breeders' Cup Challenge qualifying races in the Juvenile Turf and Juvenile Fillies Turf Divisions will be limited to two races. Breeders' Cup will promote these regional rivalries on the road to the World Championships.

The exception to the regional format will be in the Longines Breeders' Cup Classic Division, which will have six domestic races in this year's series. The complete 2022 schedule is available here.

“We're excited to introduce our restructured regional format for the year's domestic Challenge Series to better identify our top qualifiers from each part of the country as they move on to the World Championships,” said Dora Delgado, Breeders' Cup Executive Vice President and Chief Racing Officer. “The Win and You're In format has been in place since 2007 and provides a fast track to the World Championships through an automatic selection into the race and free entry fees. We look forward to working again with our racetrack partners in conducting the Challenge Series races around the world this year.”

Last year, 40 Breeders' Cup Challenge winners competed in the World Championships at Del Mar, including five Championship race winners: Knicks Go, Yibir (GB), Ce Ce, Echo Zulu and Corniche. As part of the benefits to horsemen, Breeders' Cup has allocated $5,180,000 in free entry fees for this year's Challenge Series. Breeders' Cup will pay the entry fees and guarantee a starting position in a corresponding Championships race for all Challenge Series race winners. If not already Breeders' Cup nominated, the Challenge winner must be nominated to the Breeders' Cup program by the Championships' pre-entry deadline of Oct. 24 to receive the rewards.

In addition, Breeders' Cup will provide a $10,000 travel allowance for all starters within North America that are stabled outside of Kentucky and a $40,000 travel allowance to the connections of all Championship starters from outside of North America.

Complementing the season in North America, there will be 39 international Breeders' Cup Challenge races. The international portion of the series began on Dec. 11 when the 7-year-old Village King (Arg) captured the G1 Gran Premio International Carlos Pellegrini at Hipodromo de San Isidro in Argentina to gain the first automatic starting berth into the Longines Breeders' Cup Turf.

In support of the Horse Racing Integrity and Safety Act (HISA), which was signed into law in the U.S. in 2020, medications will not be permitted to be administered within 24 hours for all Breeders' Cup Challenge Series races.

NBC and CNBC will televise the “Breeders' Cup Challenge Series: Win and You're In–presented by America's Best Racing,” featuring nine live programs in the U.S. this summer and fall. The full 2022 television schedule will be announced on Wednesday, May 25.

Oct. 15 Deadline For Breeders’ Cup Foal Nominations Fast Approaching

This Friday, Oct. 15 at 11:59 p.m. ET is the last opportunity for horsemen to nominate weanlings of 2021 to the Breeders' Cup program at the one-time regular nomination fee of $400.

The $400 nomination entitles each foal with lifetime eligibility to the Breeders' Cup World Championships and the Breeders' Cup Racing Programs. All foals sired by a fully-nominated North American Breeders' Cup stallion are eligible for nomination to the Breeders' Cup program in their year of birth at the weanling rate.

Breeders' Cup Limited has been Thoroughbred racing's most significant international program for over 38 years. During this time, Breeders' Cup has allocated purses and awards in excess of $860 million to owners, foal nominators and stallion nominators through the programs of the Breeders' Cup including the annual $31 million Breeders' Cup World Championships.

In addition to the racing benefits, in 2021, Breeders' Cup foal nominators have earned $10,000 for every victory in a Breeders' Cup Challenge “Win and You're In” race and upon starting are also eligible to win nominator awards in every Breeders' Cup World Championships race. The individual nominating the foal receives these nominator awards even though the horse may change hands throughout its racing career.

Thoroughbred Club Win Gives Bell’s The One Chance At Breeders’ Cup Return Engagement

Third behind Gamine in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint in 2020, Lothenbach Stables Inc.'s Bell's the One received an automatic fees-paid entry to this year's edition of the race with a hard-fought come-from-behind neck victory in Saturday's Grade 2, $250,000 Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky. Yet her trainer, Neil Pessin, said she seems to get no respect.

Patiently ridden by Corey Lanerie, the 5-year-old mare by Majesticperfection rallied from last with a four-wide move into the stretch, hit the front inside the eighth pole, then held off a fast closing Club Car. Estilo Talentoso finished a head behind the runner-up, followed 1 1/2 lengths farther back by Inthemidstofbiz, Frank's Rockette and Miss Mosaic.

The Thoroughbred Club of America is a Breeders' Cup Challenge Series Win and You're In race for the Filly & Mare Sprint division, giving the winner a fees-paid berth and a travel allowance.

Bell's the One ran the six furlongs in 1:08.63 on a fast main track after getting a good set-up with quick fractions of :21.57, :44.80 and :56.60 from pacesetter Inthemidstofbiz. She paid $3 to win as the heavy favorite.

“When I ride her, I just let her gather her feet underneath her and be comfortable wherever she needs to be,” said Lanerie. “Today I actually tried to keep her a little closer because I was afraid if they got away from me I wouldn't be able to make up the ground, going six furlongs, and she gives everything she's got every time. I could tell from about the five-sixteenths pole, I'm in contention where, if she gives me her kick, I'm going to catch them. She has the fastest turn of foot (of any horse) I've ever been on.”

Bell's the One gave veteran horseman Pessin his first career Grade 1 win last year when she scored in the Derby City Distaff at Churchill Downs on Sept. 5. She finished a good third behind Gamine – beaten 6 1/4 lengths – in the Filly & Mare Sprint, but Pessin wouldn't immediately commit to this year's Breeders' Cup, to be held at Del Mar in California Nov. 5-6.

“It will still depend on how she comes out of it,” said Pessin. “The plane reservations are still tough, the way they've got it—I know it's the best they can do—but we'll try to make a go of it if she comes out of it well.”

Pessin was referring to the absence of the Tex Sutton Equine Air Transportation aircraft that horsemen have depended on for a number of years. The company's lease expired on the plane expired and it has not been able to acquire a replacement to date. Breeders' Cup officials have arranged for charter flights using Fed Ex.

Bred in Kentucky by Bret Jones, Bell's the One was produced from the Street Cry mare, Street Mate. She was a $150,000 purchase by Bob Lothenbach at the 2017 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July Yearling Sale, where she was consigned by Brereton C. Jones.

Bell's the One has now won 10 of 21 starts and has been a graded stakes winner at ages 3, 4 and 5, with victories in the G2 Raven Run Stakes in 2019, the G3 Winning Colors and G1 Derby City Distaff in 2020, and the G2 Honorable Miss Handicap and Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes in 2021.

“She's one of the best mares, if not the best horse, I've ever had,” said Pessin. “The only thing I regret with her is she never gets the respect she deserves. Even in this race, people weren't even picking her on top, which made absolutely zero sense to me. The Breeders' Cup, they got Ce Ce picked in front of her on the program and I've beat her every time I've run against her. So I don't what this mare has to do to earn respect, but she's definitely got mine.”
