Ghostzapper’s Loggins Sprints To Rising Stardom At Churchill Downs

Loggins (c, 2, Ghostzapper–Beyond Blame, by Blame) had a trio of bullet workouts on display for trainer Brad Cox and ran to the money as the 4-5 favorite with an impressive 'TDN Rising Star' performance on debut Saturday at Churchill Downs.

Away in good order from a middle gate in a field of 11, the bay raced in between rivals in a tightly bunched group. Third and traveling smartly on the far turn, he launched a three-wide bid approaching the five-sixteenths, took control under his own power at the top of the stretch and was long gone from there to graduate by a jaw-dropping 8 1/2 lengths over Easy Action (Speightstown).

The $460,000 FTSAUG yearling purchase is campaigned by the powerhouse partnership of Spendthrift Farm LLC, Steve Landers Racing LLC, Martin S. Schwartz, Michael Dubb, Ten Strike Racing, Jim Bakke, Titletown Racing Stables, Kueber Racing, LLC, Big Easy Racing LLC and Winners Win.

The Ghostzapper/Arch cross is also responsible for MGISW Contested and GSWs Proctor's Ledge and In Good Spirits. Loggins, hailing from the extended female family of GISWs Street Boss and Jack Christopher, is the first foal for his graded stakes-winning dam, a Popatop homebred trained by Cox. She has also produced a Flatter filly of 2021 and a colt by Authentic of this year. She was bred back to Essential Quality.

Mor Spirit’s Quick Hammer Makes His Debut A Winning One

1st-Belmont The Big A, $95,000, Msw, 9-16, 2yo, 6f, 1:12.12, ft, 1 1/4 lengths.
QUICK HAMMER (c, 2, Mor Spirit–Malibu Cove, by Malibu Moon), picked up for just $100,000 out of the Fasig-Tipton Timonium Sale (:10 1/5) earlier this year, broke sharply from an outside gate, outpaced only by Warman Road (Unified) to his outside. Taken in hand, he rated patiently while racing two wide in company into the far turn with Space (Ghostzapper) until given his cue with just over a quarter mile to run. Still with a length to make up on the leader turning for home, Quick Hammer wasted no time reeling that tiring rival in inside of the final eighth and drawing off. Signator (Tapit), a $1.7-million OBS April purchase, rallied nicely but ran out of ground as Quick Hammer went on to a 1 1/4-length win. The eighth winner for his freshman sire (by Eskendereya), Quick Hammer is a half-brother to Kalypso (Brody's Cause), GISW, $601,878 and is out of a full-sister to MGSW Prospective. Malibu Cove produced a yearling colt by Jimmy Creed and a weanling colt by Authentic. She was bred back to Authentic for 2023. Sales History: $200,000 Ylg '21 FTKJUL; $100,000 2yo '22 EASMAY. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $52,250. Click for the Equibase.com chart.

Mandaloun Retired to Juddmonte USA

Juddmonte homebred Mandaloun (Into Mischief–Brooch, by Empire Maker), the promoted 2021 GI Kentucky Derby winner, has been retired. He will stand for $25,000 (stands and nurses) at Juddmonte USA in Kentucky.

Tabbed as a 'TDN Rising Star' in his Keeneland debut at two, Mandaloun was elevated to first via disqualification in a roughly run renewal of the GI TVG.com Haskell S. the following season at Monmouth Park. His resume also includes wins in the GII Risen Star S., GIII Louisiana S. and TVG.com Pegasus S. The handsome bay posted a career record of 12-6-1-1 and earnings of $2,096,052.

One of 11 winners at the highest level for his all-conquering sire Into Mischief, Mandaloun is out of Empire Maker's two-time Irish group winner Brooch.

Mandaloun's female family also includes G1 Matron S. winner Emulous (GB) (Dansili {GB}) and the globetrotting German Group 3 winner Alounak (Fr) (Camelot {GB}), runner-up in the GI Canadian International S.

“This horse is the entire package, I don't know that I have seen a better-looking son of Into Mischief,” trainer Brad Cox said. “We knew we had something special right out of the box. He had an exceptional turn of foot yet could carry his speed around two turns.”

“Mandaloun is a true Juddmonte stallion,” said Garrett O'Rourke, General Manager of Juddmonte USA. “He is a gorgeous horse who should offer breeders exceptional value when the time comes to sell their yearlings. We plan to support him in the same manner we did with the likes of Empire Maker and Arrogate.”
