Texas Summer Yearling Sale Catalog Available, Online Bidding To Be Offered

A catalog of 175 head is now online for the Texas Summer Yearling and Horses of Racing Age Sale set for Aug. 24 at noon CDT at Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie.

Sponsored by the Texas Thoroughbred Association and Lone Star Park, the sale will welcome bidders on site with enhanced safety protocols and for the first time will also offer live online bidding for those who cannot attend in person. Online bidders must be registered at least one week before the sale, no later than noon on Aug. 17.

“We had to cancel our 2-year-old sale due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and we've been working since then to ensure we are able to conduct this sale because of its importance to the region,” said Mary Ruyle, executive director of the TTA. “We normally wouldn't have a horses of racing age session at this sale, but we are happy to offer that this year to fill the needs of consignors and buyers. The HORA section is quite impressive.”

Ruyle credited higher purses in Texas and a new consignor incentive program as two of the reasons that this year's sale has twice the number of yearlings as last year.

“In addition to boosting purses in Texas, the passage of HB 2463 allows the horse industry to create new ways to grow, so we were able to provide consignors with a rebate of up to half the consignment fee,” she said. “We saw a great response to that incentive, which resulted in more consignors bringing their horses to sell in Texas.”

The sale will utilize a live online bidding system along with improved online video.

“We made an investment in technology to allow buyers to bid from anywhere,” said Tim Boyce, sales director. “Starting in early August, we will allow online bidders to register in advance, so we encourage anyone who is interested to do that on our website.”

The sale will kick off with a horses of racing age session including 2-year-olds in training by top sires such as Too Much Bling, Texas Red, Astrology and Twirling Candy. Among the older horses on offer are Herbs Love, a daughter of Etesaal who in her most recent start won the $75,000 San Jacinto Turf Stakes at Lone Star Park.

The yearling session will include 151 head by leading regional sires such as Too Much Bling, Star Guitar, Flat Out, Court Vision and My Golden Song. Top national sires including Tonalist, Sky Mesa, Bayern, Honor Code and California Chrome are also represented.

Breeders’ Cup Turf Winner Magician Relocated To Italy

Magician, the winner of the 2013 Breeders' Cup Turf and Irish 2,000 Guineas, has been relocated once again, this time to stand in Italy, according to the French racing publication Jour de Galop.

A farm and fee will be determined later for the 10-year-old son of Galileo, whose career will be managed by the partnership of Mattia Cadrobbi, Marco Bozzi and Guido Berardelli.

Magician began his stallion career in 2015 at Coolmore's Ashford Stud in Versailles, Ky., and he was relocated to Coolmore's Castlehyde Stud in Ireland prior to the completion of the 2018 breeding season. He was then moved to Haras de Corlay in France in 2019, where he stood for two seasons.

The stallion's oldest foals are 4-year-olds of 2020, led by Chilean Group 1-placed Calmate, English Group 2-placed Cardini, and stakes winner Miss My Rose.

Magician won four of 15 starts during his racing career for earnings of $2,580,402. His strongest campaign came at age three, in which he won the English G3 Dee Stakes as a prep for a score in the Irish 2,000 Guineas. He finished his sophomore campaign with a half-length triumph in the Breeders' Cup Turf at Santa Anita Park.

At four, Magician picked up a win in the Irish G3 Mooresbridge Stakes, and finished second in the G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup, Prince of Wales's Stakes, and Arlington Million.

Magician is out of the Group 3-placed stakes-winning Mozart mare Absolutelyfabulous, making him a full-brother to Grade 3 winner Apple Betty and Grade 1-placed stakes winner Outstanding.

Multiple European classic winner Henrythenavigator is in his extended family, along with Irish champion Listen, Group 1 winner Sequoyah, and Group 3 winner Queen Cleopatra.

Mendelssohn Shuttling To Chile For Southern Hemisphere Breeding Season

Mendelssohn, the winner of the 2017 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, will stand the 2020 Southern Hemisphere breeding season at Haras Don Alberto in Chile, the South American publication Turf Diario reports.

The 5-year-old son of Scat Daddy recently completed his second Northern Hemisphere season at Ashford Stud in Versailles, Ky., where he was advertised for a fee of $35,000. His first foals are weanlings of 2020.

Mendelssohn is out of 2016 Broodmare of the Year Leslie's Lady, making him a half-brother to champion Beholder, leading commercial sire Into Mischief, and three additional stakes-producing mares. He sold to the Coolmore operation for $3 million at the 2016 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

The colt did a lot to make up that hefty ticket at two, finishing second in the Group 1 Darley Dewhurst Stakes in England before returning stateside to win the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf at Del Mar.

Mendelssohn came back at three to win the Patton Stakes in Ireland, then he ventured to Dubai, where he picked up convincing win in the G2 UAE Derby. The colt then came back to the U.S. to compete in the 2018 Kentucky Derby, and he'd spend the rest of his racing career competing in domestic stakes. He finished his sophomore season and his career with a second in the G1 Travers Stakes and thirds in the G1 Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes and G3 Dwyer Stakes.

In total, Mendelssohn retired with four wins in 13 starts for earnings of $2,542,137.

Mendelssohn covered 252 mares during his first season at stud in 2019, tying fellow Ashford Stud resident and son of Scat Daddy Justify for the most in North America that season.

California Stallion Tizbud, Full-Brother To Tiznow, Dies At 21

Harris Farms resident stallion Tizbud, a Grade 1 sire and full-brother to Hall of Famer Tiznow, was euthanized on July 20 due to an overall decline in health. He was 21.

Tizbud was pensioned at the farm, in 2018, where he was foaled, raised, and stood at stud.

Tizbud, was bred by Cecilia Straub Rubens and is a son of Cee's Tizzy out of Cee's Song. He was the younger stakes-winning full-brother to Tiznow. Tizbud raced for Cee's Stable LLC when he won the 2003 California Cup Classic by three lengths and placed in that year's Grade 2 San Fernando Breeders' Cup Stakes. He was trained by John Sadler.

Owner Pamela C. Ziebarth stood Tizbud at Harris Farms and for her, as breeder, Tizbud sired Grade 1 winner Tiz Flirtatious, Grade 3 winner Ambitious Brew, and stakes winner Kitty Boom Boom. For other breeders, he sired stakes winners Soi Phet, Italian Boy, Catch Lorraine, and Chao Chom, among others.

David McGlothlin, retired farm manager of Harris Farms, said: “As different as they were, Tiznow and Tizbud both had that aura of 'I am tops and I can prove it and don't test me.' With my daily rounds at the farm, Tizbud was always my first stop and as always, he was eager for his carrot snacks. With his passing, this marks the end of a significant era in California breeding/racing. Tizbud will always have a special place in my heart and at the farm.”

Tizbud lived out his final few months in the same paddock where his famous brother was raised. He will be buried adjacent to his sire Cee's Tizzy near the Harris Farms Stallion complex.
