Beholder’s Yearling Filly Gets A Name: Karin With An I

The second foal out of four-time Eclipse Award winner Beholder, a filly by Curlin, has been given the name Karin With An I, owner Spendthrift Farm announced on Monday.

The name was chosen in honor of the later mother of Spendthrift president Eric Gustavson.

”My mom died the same year the filly was born,” Gustavson said. “Wayne (Hughes) so graciously suggested we name the filly after my mom. I tried her name, which is Karin, with the Jockey Club. There was already a Caren (Canada's 2016 Horse of the Year), so they rejected it. That's how I chose 'Karin With An I.”'

The name follows in the footsteps of Beholder's first foal, an Uncle Mo colt named Q B One who is training toward his debut start in Southern California. Beholder delivered her third foal, a War Front filly, on Jan. 12 at Spendthrift Farm, where the 10-year-old Henny Hughes mare resides, and she visited fellow Spendthrift resident Bolt d'Oro during the 2020 breeding season.

Curlin, a 16-year-old son of Smart Strike, stands at Hill 'n' Dale Farms in Lexington, Ky., for an advertised fee of $175,000. The two-time Horse of the Year is the sire of Breeders' Cup Classic winner Vino Rosso, Preakness Stakes winner Exaggerator, and Belmont Stakes winner Palace Malice, among many others.

First Winner For Late Stallion Effinex Comes At Saratoga

A powerful turn of foot in the stretch by Effinity led to the first winner for the late New York sire Effinex on Sunday at Saratoga Race Course, BloodHorse reports.

After a slightly troubled start, Effinity ran three-wide into the turn, then swung even wider to take over the lead and draw off in the stretch by four lengths. The colt completed the 5 1/2-furlong race in 1:06.36 over a fast main track under jockey Luis Saez. Brad Cox saddled the colt for Zilla Racing Stables.

Effinity was bred in New York by Barry Ostrager, out of the stakes-placed Freud mare Letsshootpool. Grade 3-placed Show Me the Cash is in his extended family.

Effinex, a son of Mineshaft, stood his lone season at Questroyal North in Stillwater, N.Y., then moved to McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds at the end of the season. The stallion died suddenly in the fall of 2017 at age six due to a pulmonary artery rupture, leaving just one crop of runners.

He was one of New York's most popular stallions in his lone season at stud, retiring to his native state after a racing career that saw him win nine of 28 starts for earnings of $3,312,950.

Effinex got better with age, developing into one of North America's top handicap division runners with wins in the Grade 1 Clark Handicap, two editions of the G2 Suburban Handicap, the G2 Oaklawn Handicap, and the G3 Excelsior Stakes. He also finished second in the 2015 Breeders' Cup Classic.

Dream Quist Becomes First Winner At Stud For Nyquist

Although favored at Churchill Downs last month, Nyquist's 2-year-old filly Dream Quist didn't quite seem to take to the sloppy going in her first start. However, she appears to have learned from the experience as she broke her maiden at Ellis Park to give her Kentucky Derby-winning sire his first winner as a stallion.

Although getting knocked around a bit at the start, Dream Quist didn't waste time getting into position and was soon tracking in third after a quarter of a mile.

As the field approached the turn, she took aim at the leader and sprinted by that one at the top of the stretch. The odds-on favorite passed tiring horses late to grab second but Dream Quist was 4 1/2 lengths clear at the wire.

Dream Quist was bred by Seclusive Farm LLC, Chester and Anne Prince, and James Murphy in Kentucky. She is out of listed winner Seacrettina who is a half to G2-placed Ramsgate.

Dream Quist was a $265,000 yearling at Fasig-Tipton in 2019, a year in which Nyquist was the leading first-crop yearling sire by average. In 2020, he is the leading 2-year-old sire by median.

Nyquist resides at Darley's U.S. base in Lexington, Ky., where he stood the 2020 breeding season for an advertised fee of $40,000.

Juveniles In Hubbard Dispersal Qualify For Rio Grande Futurities Finals

Three 2-year-olds in the R.D Hubbard Complete Thoroughbred Dispersal qualified for the finals of the Rio Grande Futurities on Friday, July 24, 2020 at Ruidoso Downs in New Mexico. The stakes races will be held August 16 at Ruidoso Downs. These horses will race for their new owners.

Bidding for this internet only auction closes on Tuesday, July 28 at ThoroughbredAuctions.com. Horses are selling without reserve.

Hip 11, Caught Stealing, qualified for the Rio Grande Senorita Futurity with a purse of $133,795. Caught Stealing is by freshman sire Marking, currently 10th on the first crop sire list and the leading first crop sire in New Mexico. She is a half-sister to four winners including stakes winner Sporting Chance. Her dam, Warning Track by Grand Slam, is selling as Hip 9.

Both Hubbard Dispersal runners in the trials for the Rio Grande Senor Futurity qualified for the August 16 race which has a purse of $134,632.

Hip 5, Aisle Runner, won his first start and easily qualified for the August 16 finals. He is by New Mexico Leading Sire Attila's Storm, who also sells in the dispersal. Aisle Runner is a half-brother to three stakes horses and is out of the Bernardini mare Garter, also selling. Garter is a half-sister to European Champion Sprinter Stravinsky and Moscow Ballet.

Hip 29, Pub, a full brother to Stakes-Placed winner Cerveza, also qualified to run in the finals. He is by Attila's Storm and out of Hennessy daughter Cocktail Girl, who sells in the dispersal. Cocktail Girl is the dam of 4 winners.
