Son Of Thunder, Full-Brother To Laoban, To Stand At Waldorf Farm In New York

Laoban's legacy will live on in New York as his full-brother, Son of Thunder, is set to stand at Waldorf Farm in North Chatham, N.Y., for the 2022 breeding season.

“We are honored to have been able to purchase a full brother to such an incredible stallion whose life was cut much too short,” says Sean Feld, president of Climax Stallions. “We will honor Laoban's legacy by offering a complementary breeding to anyone who bred, bought or is racing any progeny of Laoban.”

Son of Thunder, a $475,000 yearling purchased out of the Saratoga Select Sale, raced in the colors of the prestigious Lael Stables. A son of sire of sires, Uncle Mo, and out of the stakes-placed Speightstown mare Chattertown, Son of Thunder is built with stretch and athleticism.

“He easily passes the eye test. If he duplicates what his brother did with his foals, you can breed any type of mare to him,” says Waldorf Farm manager Kenny Toye.

Also very complimentary of the dark bay colt is Waldorf Farm owner, Dr. Jerry Bilinski, who describes him as having great size and conformation.

“He's by Uncle Mo, who is becoming a legendary sire of sires and we are flattered to add Son of Thunder to our stallion barn here at Waldorf Farm,” says Bilinski.

Son of Thunder will join a stacked Climax Stallions roster for the upcoming breeding season, standing for $2,500 LFSN.

Nyquist Colt Tops Final Session Of Record-Setting Fasig-Tipton October Sale

The Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October Yearlings sale concluded Thursday evening in Lexington, Ky., with final numbers which crushed historical benchmarks in gross, average, and median.

A colt by last year's leading first-crop sire Nyquist topped the final session when sold for $500,000 to St. Elias Stables from the consignment of St George Sales, agent (video).

Offered as Hip 1281, the dark bay or brown colt is the second foal out of Froyo Star, a winning Rockport Harbor half-sister to multiple Grade 1 winner Sweet Reason; graded stakes winner Don't Forget Gil; stakes winner Battle Girl; and the dam of this year's Group 1 Dubai Golden Shaheen winner Zenden. The session topper was bred in Kentucky by Southern Equine Stable, and was a $270,000 selected weanling at last year's November Sale.

“Day four was another outstanding day for the October sale,” said Fasig-Tipton president Boyd Browning. “It was kind of a fitting conclusion to an exceptional horse sale. The numbers have been tremendous all four days, across the board.”

The session's top filly came in the form of a daughter of current leading first-crop sire Gun Runner, sold for $335,000 to Donato Lanni, agent for Glen Hill Farm. The bay filly was offered as Hip 1584 by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent. The filly is the first foal out the stakes placed Malibu Moon mare Lunar Gaze, from the immediate family of multiple Grade 1 winner Ello Luv. Hip 1584 was bred in Kentucky by Waymore LLC.

“(There was) tremendous depth overall in the bidding activities,” continued Browning. “A very diverse group of buyers stayed 'til the bitter end. We saw two or three very high priced horses sold in the last 20 to 30 minutes of the sale. We really could not be any more pleased that (the sale) exceeded our most optimistic expectations.”

Rounding out the top five prices of the final session were:

Hip 1580, a colt by Street Sense out of Lucky Cover (Medaglia d'Oro), which sold for $290,000 to Cash Is King from the consignment of Burleson Farms, agent. The bay colt is the first foal out of a daughter of multiple Grade 2 winner Teammate, from the immediate family of War Front. Hip 1580 was bred in Kentucky by Nice Guys Stable.
Hip 1201, a filly by Speightstown out of Elusive Wave (Mizzen Mast), which sold for $240,000 to Maverick Racing and Siena Farm from the consignment of Four Star Sales, agent. The gray or roan filly is out of a full sister to two-time Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint winner Mizdirection). Hip 1201 was bred in Kentucky.
Hip 1338, a filly by Ghostzapper out of Handwoven (Indian Charlie), which sold for $240,000 to Jump Around Stables from the consignment of Baccari Bloodstock, agent. The dark bay or brown filly hails from the immediate family of millionaire and multiple graded stakes winner Scott's Scoundrel. Hip 1338 was bred in Kentucky by Vision Racing and Sales.

“In recent years, the trajectory of the sale has continued to improve,” added Browning. “The consignors are bringing us better horses (every year), and the buyers are supporting them.”

During Thursday's session, 297 yearlings sold for $13,095,900, good for an average of $44,094 and a median of $25,000. Thirty-four horses sold for $100,000 or more.

Over the course of the four days, 1153 horses sold for $52,607,500, surpassing by 37.5 percent the previous sale record gross of $38,258,900 set in 2019. The average was $45,627, a 20.2 percent increase over the established benchmark of $37,955 (also set in 2019). The median rose to $22,000, a new sale record 18.9 percent higher than the previous record median of $18,500 set in 2014. The RNA rate was 17.8 percent, the lowest at the Kentucky October Yearlings Sale since 2013.

The sale topper (Hip 1107), a colt by Street Sense sold for $925,000 during Wednesday's session, tied the sale record originally set in 1999, while establishing a new record price for a colt at this sale. In addition, a pair of colts sold for $750,000 – a colt by Empire Maker (Hip 513) on Tuesday and a colt by Gun Runner (Hip 870) on Wednesday – to match the previous record price for a colt at Kentucky October Yearlings, which was established in 2000.

Shadwell Draft Heads Final Session Of Record-Breaking Tattersalls Autumn Horses In Training Sale

The final day of the record-breaking Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale was dominated by the Shadwell Estates consignment which was responsible for the top five lots, including the session topping Laatansa who realized 250,000 guineas.

The strength of the earlier sessions continued into the fourth day with significant rises in all key indicators resulting in the sale recording a record turnover, average and median, all of which rose substantially compared with last year's sale.

The top price on the final day was 250,000 guineas for the 2-year-old Laatansa who has finished third on his last two starts for trainer Ed Dunlop. The son of New Bay was greeted by a packed sales ring and after some early brisk flurries, the bidding soon settled into a head-to-head battle between the Najd Stud team and Ronald Rauscher, with the former successful at what is the second highest price for the final session of this sale.

Najd Stud's Saad bin Mishraf had left Park Paddocks bound for Saudi Arabia, leaving Saudi-based trainer and consultant Saud al Qahtani in charge of bidding and taking instructions over the telephone.

“Saad called me and told me not to leave here without this horse. He is a beautiful horse and a lovely physical. He is by a very promising stallion, whose progeny are booming. He has a very good family and we hope he will be a very good horse next year.

“We have bought 14 horses here this week and they are of great quality. We will have a great race in Saudi Arabia at the end of February, our race will be the destination for all the very best horses from Europe and America, and our Jockey Club racing manager is doing a great job.”

Laatansa was third at Newmarket on his most recent appearance and was offered with a 'Timeform' rating of 86. He is out of the Listed placed Rock of Gibraltar mare Louve Rare, herself a half-sister to the Group 2 winner and triple Group 1 placed Loup Breton.

The Najd Stud and Peter and Ross Doyle Bloodstock team purchased fourteen lots this week totaling 2,791,000 guineas, whilst Shadwell Estates' consignment saw a total of 118 lots realise 5,238,500 guineas.

At the conclusion of the 2021 Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented;

“An extraordinary renewal of a unique sale. There is no sale in the world quite like the Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale and there has never been one quite like the sale that has just taken place.

“Records for turnover, average and median are always notable landmarks for any sale, but when the record margins are so large it suggests that maybe new factors have come into play and to an extent that may have been the case this week. There is no doubt that the major consignment from the late Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum's Shadwell Estates has introduced a new dynamic. A consignment of that size and quality does not go unnoticed and the buyers have seized the rare opportunity to source horses from one of the finest owner/breeder operations in the world.

“Additionally, the numerous racing carnivals that now take place during the Autumn and Winter months throughout the Gulf region have had a huge impact on the sale. Buyers from the Gulf have been major contributors to Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sales for many years, but new racing opportunities have brought buyers from the region in even greater numbers than before and crucially, they have been active at all levels of the market.

“Equally important has been the sustained success-driven demand throughout the sale from Australian connections and this has been despite continued difficulties surrounding travel. There will be around 40 horses heading to Australia from this week's sale and that is in addition to the 30 or so yearlings which were purchased at the recent Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. The Australian buyers deserve huge praise for their collective commitment using every means possible to continue buying here despite being unable to travel and we look forward to them being rewarded with more success along the lines of recent Tattersalls Australian superstars Zaaki and Russian Camelot.

“The strong domestic demand we saw at our yearling sales has also been replicated and we can not only look back on a successful month at Tattersalls, but also take encouragement as we look forward to the Tattersalls December Foal and Mares Sale which, similar to this week, features outstanding consignments from Godolphin, Juddmonte Farms and Shadwell Estates.”

Stakes Producers Love Spun, Show Me Added To Fasig-Tipton November Catalog

Fasig-Tipton has added two more supplemental entries to its upcoming November Sale. These latest entries are cataloged as hips 271 and 272:

Love Spun (Hip 271): Daughter of Hard Spun is the dam of Special Reserve, currently one of the nation's top sprinters. Special Reserve, winner of the G2 Phoenix Stakes in his most recent start on Oct. 8, is a multiple graded stakes winner this year. Prior to his win in the Phoenix, Special Reserve was a close second in the G1 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap at Saratoga. He will make his next anticipated start in the Breeders' Cup Sprint. Love Spun will be offered in foal to Cowtown Cat by St. George Sales, agent.
Show Me (Hip 272): Young daughter of Lemon Drop Kid is the dam of exciting 2-year-old filly Eda. Eda, the first foal out of Show Me, easily captured the Anoakia Stakes this past weekend at Santa Anita. Eda also won her debut at Santa Anita in June and finished a close second in Del Mar's G2 Sorrento Stakes in August. Show Me will be offered in foal to Munnings, carrying a full sibling to Eda. She is consigned by Paramount Sales, agent.

These entries may now be viewed online and will also be available in the equineline sales catalogue app. Printed versions of the supplemental catalog will be available on the sales grounds at sale time.

The Fasig-Tipton November Sale will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 9 in Lexington, Ky. and begins at 2 p.m.
