Tacitus To Stand At Taylor Made Stallions Upon Retirement

Multiple graded stakes winner Tacitus, an earner of more than $3.7 million and a son of perennial leading sire Tapit out of champion older female and five-time Grade 1 winner Close Hatches, will stand stud duty at Taylor Made Stallions at the conclusion of his racing career, the farm announced today.

Owned in partnership by Don Alberto, Juddmonte Farms, and Taylor Made Stallions, Tacitus will stand for a fee of $10,000 S&N; a breeding right program will also be offered.

A Juddmonte Farms homebred trained by Bill Mott, Tacitus is a three-time graded stakes winner who has banked $3,767,350, while recording six triple-digit Beyer Speed Figures. Tacitus came out running as a juvenile and broke his maiden in his second career start at two. From that point forward, Tacitus competed exclusively in graded stakes races for the next three years.

“I knew he had to be a champion when I first jumped on him,” jockey Jose Ortiz told US Racing. “I love everything about him. He's got a great stride, and he's very athletic.”

In 2019, Tacitus enjoyed a spectacular sophomore season, winning the $400,000 Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby in his 3-year-old debut, stopping the clock in the stakes-record time of 1:41.90 for the 1 1/16 miles, just .15 off the track record. Tacitus overcame a troubled trip in winning the $750,000 G2 Wood Memorial Stakes —the same race his sire won—in just his fourth career start.

In racking up impressive back-to-back graded victories in Derby preps at two different tracks, Tacitus vaulted to the top of the leaderboard for the Kentucky Derby. A game third in the Kentucky Derby, defeating Grade 1 winners Improbable, Game Winner, and War of Will, Tacitus remained one of the top 3-year-olds of his generation, finishing second in the Belmont Stakes and the G1 Travers Stakes (G1).

In 2020 at age four, Tacitus proved an ultra-impressive winner of the 1 1/4-mile G2 Suburban Stakes at Belmont Park, overpowering his rivals for an 8 3/4-length victory under a hand ride. His final time for the 1 1/4 miles was a lively 1:59.51.

By a three-time champion sire, Tacitus is produced from Juddmonte's 2014 champion older female Close Hatches, one of the leading fillies of her generation and a direct descendant of 1982 Broodmare of the Year Best in Show. Also trained by Mott, Close Hatches, in her championship season in 2014, recorded successive Grade 1 victories in the Apple Blossom Handicap, the Ogden Phipps Handicap, and the Personal Ensign Stakes en route to career earnings of $2,707,300. Her additional Grade 1 wins came in the 2013 G1 Mother Goose Stakes and that year's G1 Cotillion Stakes.

Keeneland November Sale Adds 11 Supplemental Entries

Keeneland has announced that 11 horses have been supplemented to the horses of racing age portion during the 78th November Breeding Stock Sale, to be held Nov. 10-19. In addition, a weanling colt by Liam's Map has been supplemented to Book 1 on the sale's opening day.

Consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent, the weanling colt is out of the Street Cry mare Amen Sista, a full sister to Grade 3 winner Southdale, and from the family of Grade 3 winner Plainsman.

Keeneland will accept supplements to Book 1 until the November Sale begins and continue to accept supplements to the horses of racing age portion through mid-November.

The horses of racing age section of the November Sale on Nov. 19 includes this latest round of supplements:

– Ali Alley, a 2-year-old daughter of Quality Road out of stakes winner Madame Pele, by Salt Lake. She is consigned by Denali Stud, agent.

– Crowded Trade, a 3-year-old colt by More Than Ready who this year was second in the Grade 3 Gotham, was third in the G2 Wood Memorial Presented by Resorts World Casino and G2 Amsterdam and competed in the Preakness Stakes. Consigned by ELiTE, agent, he is out of stakes winner and Grade 3-placed Maude S, by Jump Start.

– Federalist Papers, a winning 3-year-old filly by More Than Ready out of the Galileo mare Infamous. From the family of European champion 2-year-old colt Mastercraftsman, she is consigned by ELiTE, agent.

– Made In Italy, a winning, Group 2-placed 4-year-old filly by Mukhadram consigned by ELiTE, agent.

– Piece of My Heart, a 4-year-old daughter of Flat Out who won the 2020 Gardenia Stakes at Oaklawn Park. Her dam, Intheriver, by Sunriver, is a full sister to multiple Grade 1 winner Weemissfrankie, third in the 2011 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. Eaton Sales, agent, consigns Piece of My Heart.

– School of Thought, a 3-year-old Empire Maker filly out of the A.P. Indy mare Sequel, a full sister to Grade 1 winner A. P. Adventure. She is consigned by ELiTE, agent.

– Take Joy, a 3-year-old daughter of Empire Maker out of the Grade 2-placed Harlan's Holiday mare Duff One. Denali Stud, agent, consigns the filly, who is from the family of Grade/Group 2 winners Rabbit Run and Rainha Da Bateria and Grade/Group 3 winners Asakusa Genki, Assateague and Kindergarden Kid.

– The Peninsula, a winning 2-year-old gelding by Fed Biz from the family of champion Riboletta consigned by Keith Dickey.

– Three Technique, a Grade 2-placed winning 4-year-old colt by Mr Speaker. The half-brother to multiple stakes winner Stan the Man is consigned by Blackwood Stables, agent.

– Tuggle, a Grade 2-placed winning 4-year-old colt by Point of Entry consigned by Blackwood Stables, agent. He is from the family of champion Heavenly Prize, Grade 1 winners Oh What a Windfall and Dancing Forever and Grade 3 winner Carrumba.

– With Cause, a 2-year-old filly by Creative Cause whose dam, Withhold, by Tiznow, is a half-sister to Group 1 winner Cafe Pharoah, Grade 2 winner Regal Glory and Grade 3 winner Night Prowler. She is consigned by Paramount Sales, agent.

‘Special’ Penultimate Foal Out Of Leslie’s Lady Wins On Debut At Keeneland

Clarkland Farm's homebred Marr Time added another impressive branch to her family tree when she sailed to a 2¾-length victory in her debut at Keeneland on Thursday. Ridden by Florent Geroux for Brad Cox, the 2-year-old daughter of Not This Time won the 6-furlong race in 1:11.96 as the 3-5 favorite.

“Just getting to this first start with all the expectations was a big goal for us,” said Tessa Bisha, a Kentucky assistant for Cox, who has been with the filly all year. “We were hopeful she would run like she did, but we haven't made any plans after that race. She cooled out well and she looks great this morning (Friday). She's always thought she was special.”

Marr Time is out of 2016 Broodmare of the Year Leslie's Lady, one of the Thoroughbred industry's all-time great producers. The best offspring of the daughter of Tricky Creek are multiple champion Beholder, Grade 1 winner and leading sire Into Mischief, and Grade 1 winner and sire Mendelssohn. Two of her offspring have topped Keeneland's September Yearling Sale: Mendelssohn at $3 million in 2016 and America's Joy at $8.2 million in 2019.

Celebrating Marr Time's winning performance was the Clarkland team of Fred and Nancy Mitchell and their family.

“Every Kentucky breeder wants to win a race at Keeneland,” the Mitchells' daughter Marty Buckner said. “It can be nerve-wracking but to find out how (good) the bloodlines are, you have to race them.”

Marr Time is the 14th foal out of Leslie's Lady, whose final offspring is the yearling Kantharos filly Love You Irene. Now 25, Leslie's Lady lives as a retiree at Clarkland, which 15 years ago bought her in foal to Orientate for $100,000 at the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.

The family opted to breed Leslie's Lady to Not This Time in part because he is a grandson of Storm Cat and her best offspring have been from that sire line.

“Marr Time was always easy,” Buckner said. “Leslie's Lady's best foals are always easy to raise and when you ask them to do something new, they rise to the occasion.”

Graded Stakes Winner Tamahere Latest Supplement To Fasig-Tipton November

Graded stakes winner Tamahere, a 4-year-old daughter of Wootton Bassett, is the latest supplement to the Fasig-Tipton November Sale. Cataloged as hip 273, she will be consigned as a racing/broodmare prospect by ELiTE, agent.

Tamahere began her career in her native France, where she was stakes placed at two and a stakes winner at three, taking the Prix la Sorellina by more than seven lengths. She was sent to the U.S. for her next start, easily winning her stateside debut in the Grade 2 Sands Point Stakes at Belmont. This year at four, she won the Violet Stakes at Monmouth and finished second in the G1 Jenny Wiley Stakes, beaten just two lengths by Juliet Foxtrot. She has current earnings of $306,466.

Tamahere is a daughter of champion Wootton Bassett, one of Europe's most sought-after sires. Her dam, Alatasarai, is a multiple stakes producing daughter of Giant's Causeway. Tamahere is a half-sister to two other winners, including French stakes winner Shadan. Her immediate family includes champion Easy Option and classic winner Classic Park.

“Tamahere is a very exciting supplemental entry,” said Fasig-Tipton president Boyd Browning. “Not only is she a graded stakes winner and Grade 1 placed in the United States, but she's also a stakes winner in Europe. She's by one of the most exciting young sires in the world, beautifully bred, and just four years old.”

This entry may now be viewed online and will also be available in the equineline sales catalogue app. Printed versions of the supplemental catalog will be available on the sales grounds at sale time.

The Fasig-Tipton November Sale will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 9 in Lexington, Ky., and begins at 2 p.m.
