Stuart Fitzgibbon Named Stallion Director Of Darby Dan Farm

Darby Dan Farm has announced the newest member of its management team with the hiring of Stuart Fitzgibbon as stallion director.

Fitzgibbon brings a wealth of international industry experience to the post, having served as stallion seasons sales manager at such world-class facilities as Ashford Stud and Coolmore, and as general manager, commercial, at Castleton Lyons.

“I am delighted to be joining the team at Darby Dan headed by John Phillips,” Fitzgibbon said. “Darby Dan has a very celebrated history in the world of bloodstock racing and breeding and continues to offer breeders stallions the caliber of Dialed In and Tapiture that are proven on the track. It's an exciting time to become a part of this venture with newer additions, including Flameaway who had a tremendous start with his first-crop yearlings, and Mutasaabeq, who commences his breeding career in 2023.”

Fitzgibbon's extensive experience includes stints in Europe with Coolmore and in Kentucky with Ashford Stud and Castleton Lyons. Most recently, Fitzgibbon was director of sales and client development with Open Nutrition USA, a leading, global horse supplement company where he operated out of Lexington.

“Stuart is a perfect fit for Darby Dan given our goals for the future,” said John Phillips. “His experience at Coolmore, Ashford, and Castleton Lyons aligns with our desire to increase the quality and number of our stallion ranks. Three Horses Supplemented To Book 1 Of Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale

Keeneland has announced the latest round of supplements to Book 1 of the 79th November Breeding Stock Sale, to be held Nov. 7. The session begins at 1 p.m. ET.

Keeneland will accept supplements to Book 1 until the November Sale begins.

Today's supplements are:

– American Apple, a 2-year-old filly by American Pharoah who won the Oct. 8 Grade 3 Matron at Belmont at the Big A and is a contender for the Nov. 4 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint at Keeneland. A half-sister to multiple Grade 3 winner Lady Apple and stakes winner Dr. Diamonds Prize, she is out of Grade 2-placed winner Miss Mary Apples, by Clever Trick. KatieRich Farms consigns American Apple, who is cataloged as a racing or broodmare prospect.

– Princess Julia, a daughter of Distorted Humor and champion Folklore, by Tiznow, who is in foal to Medaglia d'Oro. From the family of North American champion Essential Quality and Japanese champion and Triple Crown winner Contrail, Princess Julia is consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent for STH LLC.

– Wakanaka (IRE), a 4-year-old filly who won this year's G2 Dance Smartly, was second in the G1 Just a Game and made her most recent start against males in the G1 Ricoh Woodbine Mile. A Group 3 winner in Italy, she is a daughter of the Australian stallion Power out of the Kodiac mare Storyline. Cataloged as a racing or broodmare prospect, Wakanaka is consigned by Bluewater Sales, agent.

The November Breeding Stock Sale covers a total of 10 sessions through Nov. 16. The Keeneland November Horses of Racing Age Sale will be held Nov. 17.

Collusion Illusion, Tamarkuz to Stand At Ontario’s Ballycroy Bloodstock In 2023

Ballycroy Bloodstock is ushering in renovations to their stallion facility by adding two stallions to their roster. freshman sire and multiple graded stakes winner Collusion Illusion and Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile winner and current third-crop sire Tamarkuz will stand at the Loretto, Ont., farm for the 2023 breeding season.

The farm's stallion facility will be brand new for the 2023 breeding season, with an aqua treadmill for fitness upkeep, a new breeding shed, teasing stalls and stocks to prep the mares for breeding.

Collusion Illusion, by proven Grade 1-producing sire Twirling Candy, was a graded stakes winner at two and three, winning the Grade 2 Best Pal as a juvenile and the G1 Bing Crosby during his 3-year-old campaign.

From 13 career starts he compiled a record of 5-1-1, earned close to $500,000, and was graded stakes placed twice more in the G1 Mailibu and the G2 Santa Anita Sprint Championship.

He is the first foal out of Natalie Grace, an unraced First Dude mare, and his extended maternal family includes multiple graded stakes winner Bahamian Squall, graded stakes winner Apriority, graded stakes placed Amathos, and stakes winners Squall City, Doonesbear, and Oh So Precious.

“Collusion Illusion is an exciting stallion prospect, and we are thrilled to have him standing in Ontario,” said Ballycroy Director of Bloodstock Michaela Kemp. “He is a great addition to our stallion roster, and we look forward to filling his first book of mares this season.”

Collusion Illusion will stand for $6,000.

Tamarkuz was a multiple group stakes winner at Meydan Racecourse in Dubai during his 4-year-old season, and when he moved stateside for his 5- and 6-year-old seasons he earned a pair of graded stakes placed results in the G2 Kelso Handicap and G1 Forego.

The son of sire-of-sires Speightstown capped off his racing career with a win in the 2016 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile where he defeated leading second-crop sire and 2017 Horse of the Year Gun Runner, and multiple Grade 1 winners Accelerate, Runhappy, and Dortmund among others.

“Tamarkuz has been well supported in Kentucky by Shadwell and their mares,” said Kemp. “We are looking forward to seeing his progeny progress more on the track with time as the Speightstowns do.”

He was a winner at two, three, five, and six, earning over $1.8 million during his racing career, and is a half-brother to multiple grades stakes placed Without Parole (GB) and black type winner Dreams With You (GB).

His extended maternal family includes earner of $1.9 million, multiple Grade 1 winner, and classic-placed Stay Thirsty, graded stakes winners Andromeda's Hero and Spur Winner, and black type winners Superfly, Time Changes and Make Change.

Tamarkuz will stand for $4,000.

Ballycroy Bloodstock is hosting an open house on Oct. 29, at 11:30 a.m., at their farm located at 1796 Concession Road 4 in Loretto, Ont. Both stallions will be on show.

Multiple Grade 1 Producer Alternate Dies At Age 23

Alternate (Seattle Slew – Strike a Balance, by Green Dancer) passed away on Oct. 15 at her lifetime home, Pin Oak Stud. She was 23 years old. 

The multiple stakes-winning Pin Oak homebred won six races and placed another 11 times – seven in stakes, including the Grade 2 Monmouth Breeders' Cup Oaks, G3 Delaware Oaks, G3 Bewitch Stakes and the G3 Glens Falls Handicap. She was trained by Graham Motion and earned over $550,000.

Alternate left a legacy as a Grade 1 producer, in addition to her highly successful racing career. The dam of nine winners from 12 foals Alternate produced three major stakes winners, including two millionaires. 

G2 Peter Pan Stakes winner Alternation (Distorted Humor) won or placed in seven stakes including the G2 Oaklawn Handicap, G3 Pimlico Special and G3 Razorback Handicap. Also a success at stud, Alternation is the sire of some 25 stakes horses to date, including multiple Grade 1 winner Serengeti Empress, who earned nearly $2.2 million. 

Alternate also produced Grade 1 winner and millionaire Higher Power (Medaglia d'Oro), winner of the G1 Pacific Classic Stakes, also placed in three additional Grade 1 events including the Breeders' Cup Classic, earning nearly $1.6 million. The  first foals by Higher Power arrived this year. 

The third stakes winner produced by Alternate is Interrupted (Broken Vow), a Pin Oak homebred who scored five wins, was graded stakes-placed and earned over $250,000. 

From a deep Pin Oak family, Alternate was a half-sister to Pin Oak champion Peaks and Valleys, out of a half-sister to Wedding Picture and Tonka Wakhan, all from the Pin Oak foundation mare Strike a Pose.

Alternate will be buried at Pin Oak Stud.
