Grade 1 Winner Happy Saver To Stand At Airdrie Stud In 2023

Airdrie Stud has announced that Wertheimer and Frere's homebred Happy Saver will retire to the Midway, Ky. nursery following this year's Breeders' Cup World Championships.

Undefeated in his first five starts, Happy Saver's signature victory came in the historic Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup, winning the race as a 3-year-old in just his fourth career start. Most recently, Happy Saver has finished second in each of the last four Grade 1 races he has contested while competing with the top horses in training.  Those efforts include runner-up finishes to Flightline in the G1 Metropolitan Handicap and Life is Good in the G1 Whitney Handicap – races in which he finished in front of the talented Grade 1 winners Olympiad, Hot Rod Charlie, Speaker's Corner and Aloha West, among others.

Conditioned by Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher throughout his career, Happy Saver will take a lifetime record of five wins and six placings from his 12 lifetime races and earnings of nearly $1.2 million into an expected start in the $6-million Longines Breeders' Cup Classic at Keeneland.  Plans call for him to be retired following the race.

A regally-bred son of the multiple Eclipse Award siring Super Saver, Happy Saver's female family stands as one of the breed's most important. Out of the sprinting black-type Distorted Humor mare, Happy Week, Happy Saver's third dam is Broodmare of the Year Weekend Surprise, dam of the great champion racehorse and stallion A.P. Indy as well as leading sire Summer Squall.

“Happy Saver has been a priority for our farm since the day we watched him break his maiden in his debut at Belmont,” said Airdrie's Bret Jones. “He won by five lengths that day and ran the same 1:21 and 2 as the 7-furlong G1 Woody Stephens run on the same card at the same distance. It was a “wow” performance and he has validated that early impression by becoming one of the best racehorses in America. He's a direct descendent of Weekend Surprise and when you combine his female family with that of Super Saver's, it's as rich a genetic bank as any horse that will ever retire to stud. He exemplifies the Wertheimer family's best-in-class breeding program and we are so grateful that they have allowed us to partner with them on a stallion that has the speed, class and charisma to be a really special sire.”

“Winning the Jockey Club as an undefeated 3-year-old takes a very special horse, and that's exactly what we've always believed Happy Saver to be,” added trainer Todd Pletcher. “He's a tremendous talent and runs with as much heart as any horse we lead over. He has all the characteristics I think any breeder would look for in a young stallion.”

Happy Saver will stand for an initial fee of $12,5000 LFSN

Louisiana Champion Hope List Euthanized At Age 32

Two-time accredited Louisiana-bred champion filly or mare, Hope List, was euthanized due to the infirmities of old age in October. She was 32 years old.

Unraced as a 2-year-old, Hope List gave us a hint of her class with four wins as a 3-year-old. At four, she was stakes-placed in both the Honeymoon Stakes and Sangue Handicap.

As a 5-year-old, Hope List broke into the stakes-winning class with wins in the Red Camelia Handicap and in the Louisiana Champions Day Turf, where she handily beat the boys. She was also second in the Coca Cola Classic and the Vinery Matchmaker Stakes and third in the Sangue Handicap.

She saved her best for her 6-year-old season with four stakes wins that included finally capturing the Sangue Handicap in addition to winning the Furl Sail Handicap, Red Camelia Handicap and finishing the year with a win in the Louisiana Champions Day Ladies.

As a 7-year-old she won her third Red Camelia Handicap and was stakes placed in both the Sangue Handicap and the Honeymoon Stakes.

In all, Hope List won 20 races from 81 starts with 12 seconds and 13 thirds for earnings of $601,475 for owner/breeder Delmar Caldwell. She was voted champion filly or mare in both 1995 and 1996.

European Star Baaeed Retired To Shadwell’s Nunnery Stud In England For 2023

Baaeed, the winner of six Group 1 races and, at 135, the highest-rated turf racehorse anywhere in the world, will join the Shadwell stallion roster at Nunnery Stud in Norfolk for 2023.

Shadwell's homebred colt has an impeccable pedigree, being by the brilliant world champion Sea The Stars out of the Listed-winning Kingmambo mare Aghareed, making him a full-brother to this season's Group 1 Coronation Cup winner Hukum.

Aghareed is out of Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf heroine Lahudood, who is descended from His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum's blue hen mare Height Of Fashion, the dam of top-class performers Nashwan, Nayef and Unfuwain.

Baaeed was expertly prepared by William Haggas to win all his six starts at three, including wide-margin successes in the listed Sir Henry Cecil Stakes at Newmarket and the G3 Thoroughbred Stakes at Goodwood.

He made his breakthrough at the highest level by beating Group 1 winners Order Of Australia, Victor Ludorum and Snow Lantern to take the Prix du Moulin at Longchamp, and signed off for the 2021 season by outbattling world champion miler Palace Pier to score in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot.

Baaeed was even better this season at four, winning three prestigious Group 1 contests over a mile, all in impressive fashion. His triumphs in the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury, Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot and Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood were followed by a breathtaking performance on his first start over 10 furlongs in the Juddmonte International at York, where he surged clear of the previous year's winner Mishriff, in electrifying style, to prevail by no less than six and a half lengths.

Baaeed will stand alongside fellow Sussex Stakes victor Mohaather, exciting first-season sire Tasleet and Group 1-winning sprinter Eqtidaar at Nunnery Stud. His nomination fee will be announced in due course.

Sheikha Hissa said: “On behalf of my family, I am delighted to confirm that Baaeed has now been retired to stand at Shadwell's Nunnery Stud for the 2023 season, where he was born in 2018. We are all so proud of what Baaeed has achieved and count ourselves very fortunate to have shared his journey with him. I would like to thank everyone at William's for managing his career so expertly and the teams at Shadwell and Derrinstown for raising him to be the champion that he is.

“His regal pedigree and outstanding conformation will stand him in excellent stead at stud and hopefully attract the top breeders from around the world, so that together we can give Baaeed every chance to prove himself as exceptional a stallion as he was a racehorse.”

Stephen Collins, European Bloodstock Manager said: “Shadwell are honored to welcome Baaeed, the top-rated turf horse in the world to their stallion portfolio. Baaeed has all the qualities that breeders require to make the grade as a successful stallion. He is a magnificent racehorse with superb conformation coupled with a wonderful temperament.

“His exemplary pedigree has been developed and nurtured by the late Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum and his family for over 40 years and this renowned bloodline continues to provide so many great racehorses and racing memories for us all.

“I have no doubt that Baaeed will be hugely popular at stud, and we very much look forward to his arrival in a few weeks' time.”

William Haggas said: “We have enjoyed an incredible journey with Baaeed over the last 18 months. His speed, brilliance and raw ability combined with an extraordinarily good temperament have made him a joy to train.

He is unquestionably the best horse ever to have walked through the doors at Somerville Lodge and I hope he enjoys as fruitful a career at stud.”

Angus Gold, racing manager said: “We have been blessed to have Baaeed racing in the Shadwell silks for the last two seasons. Since the first day he set foot on a racecourse he has demonstrated his class, incredible turn of foot and outstanding temperament at every opportunity, highlighted by his magnificent victory in the Juddmonte International at York in August.

As well as being a beautifully balanced horse with enormous presence and his exceptional temperament, Baaeed's greatest asset was his remarkable turn of foot which has been evident on so many occasions, and we are all very excited and proud to launch his stallion career at Nunnery Stud for 2023.”
