EDIFIED (Tapit), a half-brother to GI La Brea S. winner Constellation (Bellamy Road), makes his afternoon debut Saturday for owner Courtlandt Farms and trainer Steve Asmussen. A $650,000 yearling purchase out of Keeneland September last autumn, the colt is out of the stakes-winning mare For Royalty, who brought a final bid of $2.1m from Summer Wind Equine at the 2017 Keeneland November Sale. For Royalty is herself a half-sister to champion imported 2-year-old colt in Puerto Rico El Viento (El Corredor) and GSW/GISP Kiss to Remember (Big Brown) while Edified's third dam produced full-siblings MGISW Spun Sugar (Awesome Again) and GI Hill 'n' Dale Cigar Mile H. victor Daaher.

Racing as a homebred for Cypress Creek Equine, Django (Medaglia d'Oro) is a half-brother to GISW Finley'sluckycharm (Twirling Candy). Under his third dam is a host of graded-stakes performers including: MGISW Pure Clan (Pure Prize), SW/GISP Princesa Carolina (Tapit), MGSW Greater Good (Intidab), GISW Sky Diva (Sky Mesa) and SW/MGISP Quick Little Miss (Freud).

Racing for Naoya Yoshida, Normandy Hero (Omaha Beach) enters off a best-of-68 drill June 23, going four furlongs in :47 4/5. His dam's half-sister produced GIII Schuylerville S. winner Pretty Birdie (Bird Song) while his third dam is a half to champion 3-year-old filly Bird Town (Cape Town) and GI Belmont S. winner Birdstone (Grindstone). One of only two first-time starters facing ten rivals, Memphis (Gun Runner) makes his debut after bringing $850,000 as a yearling at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select Sale. The colt's third dam, Quiet Dance, produced Horse of the Year Saint Liam (Saint Ballado), GISW Funtastic (More Than Ready), and Quiet Giant (Giant's Causeway), the dam of this runner's sire Gun Runner (Candy Ride {Arg}). NYRA To Increase Purses For NY-Breds At Saratoga

Registered New York-bred horses competing in open company at the upcoming summer meet at Saratoga Race Course will receive a new series of purse increases the New York Racing Association, Inc. announced Sunday.

“NYRA is committed to supporting and enhancing the New York-bred program now and in the future,” said Frank Gabriel, NYRA SVP of Racing Operations. “These purse increases reflect the sustained growth of the New York-bred marketplace while also rewarding owners already invested in the program.”

The purse for registered New York-breds running in select open-company races will be 30 percent higher than the purse offered for non-New York-breds. Additionally, New York State Breeding Fund Owner Awards (NYSBFOA) and breeder awards will be paid on top of the 30 percent additional purse for registered New York-breds.

“The opportunity for registered New York-breds to compete for elevated purses in select open company conditions during the Saratoga meet, along with increases in breeder and open company awards provided by the New York State Thoroughbred Breeding & Development Fund reflect the commitment by New York's respective thoroughbred racing stakeholders in continuing to elevate the New York-bred program,” said Najja Thompson, New York Thoroughbred Breeders, Inc. (NYTB) Executive Director. “We are confident much of the money earned from these purse increases will be reinvested in New York-breds, starting with the Fasig-Tipton New York-bred Select Yearlings Sale in August at Saratoga.”

Frankel Filly Strikes In New York

Last autumn's GII Sands Point S. heroine Skims (GB) (Frankel {GB}) ran out an easy winner in New York for breeder Andrew Rosen and trainer Shug McGaughey earlier this month (video).

Now with four victories to her name, the $235,000 Keeneland September buy-back is the seventh foal out of Royal Decree (Street Cry {Ire}), and she is a half-sister to G2 Vintage S. hero War Decree (War Front) and the stakes-placed Noble Quality (Elusive Quality). Her second dam is the GI American Oaks Invitational and GI Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup S. heroine Ticker Tape (Royal Applause {GB}). This is also the family of crack sprinter Brando (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), who won the G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest, and G1 Prix Morny winner Reckless Abandon (GB) (Exchange Rate).

No sire in the world is having a better few days than Juddmonte's Frankel, who fired in three Group 1 winners at Royal Ascot. However, his American record is also nothing to sneeze at, with 25 winners from 43 runners (58%). His 10 stakes winners there (23%) are anchored by GI Belmont Oaks heroine McKulick (GB).

 

 

Masseto Returns A Winner After Long Break

J. Stable LLC's Masseto (GB) (Territories {Ire}) won a Woodbine affair just over a year after his last winning effort at that venue last Thursday for trainer Mark Casse (video).

Bred by Ciaran Paterson, the 62,000gns Tattersalls December foal was sold for 65,000gns out of Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. Owned by J Carthy for his first two starts, the former Donnacha O'Brien trainee was placed twice at group level in Ireland.

The third foal out of the winning Never Change (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}), the 4-year-old colt is from the same family as G2 Great Voltigeur S. hero Sacrament (GB) (Shirley Heights {GB}), who was a son of the stakes winner Blessed Event (Ire) (Kings Lake), herself second in the G1 Yorkshire Oaks.

Darley stallion Territories has now sired two winners from five runners in the U.S. (40%). His best is the GIII Beaugay S. heroine Rougir (Fr), who also won Woodbine's GI E. P. Taylor S. in Canada.

Friday Insights: Half To Justify Leads Belmont Maiden Field

The only first-time starter facing a field of more experienced maidens, SPELL ON YOU (Curlin) makes her afternoon debut Friday as a homebred for John Gunther, also the breeder of the filly's Triple Crown-winning half-brother Justify (Scat Daddy). Dam Stage Magic, 2018's broodmare of the year, is also responsible for the late GSW The Lieutenant (Street Sense) along with 'TDN Rising Star' Stage Raider (Pioneerof the Nile). Under the tutelage of trainer Jorge Abreu, Spell On You picks up jockey Dylan Davis for her unveiling. TJCIS PPS
