Creative Flair, Harajuku Add European Flair To Saturday’s Jockey Club Oaks Invitational

Godolphin's Creative Flair and Flaxman Stable's Group 3 winner Harajuku will invade from across the pond when taking on five American-based contenders in Saturday's second running of the $700,000 Jockey Club Oaks Invitational going 1 3/8 miles over the inner turf at Belmont Park.

The Jockey Club Oaks Invitational is the final leg of the filly division of the NYRA's Turf Triple series for 3-year-olds, which also consists of the Grade 1 Belmont Oaks Invitational and Grade 3 Saratoga Oaks Invitational. Its male counterpart race, the $1 million Jockey Club Derby Invitational, also is scheduled for Saturday's 11-race card.

Trainer Charlie Appleby enjoyed success shipping Godolphin-owned Althiqa to New York this season, capturing the Grade 1 Longines Just a Game at Belmont Park and Grade 1 Diana at Saratoga.

For the Jockey Club Oaks, Appleby sends out Creative Flair, who was a last-out third in the Grade 3 Saratoga Oaks Invitational in her North American debut. The daughter of Dubawi, who was off a step slow, saved ground under Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith down the backstretch, angled several paths wide just past the quarter pole and finished third, beaten two lengths.

“The race didn't ever really set up for her. She jumped a little slowly and got a little bit of a knock,” said Appleby assistant Chris Connett. “The team wanted her to sit a bit closer to the pace than she ended up being and it just didn't pan out. She's had a nice break and seems fresh and well and ready to run a big race for us.”

Creative Flair was a three-time winner in England at distances ranging from seven furlongs to 1 ¼ miles. She ventured outside England for the first time when a close third in the Group 3 Prix Chloe on July 18 at Chantilly in France.

Connett said Creative Flair is arriving at Saturday's test in good order following her Saratoga effort.

“She traveled back to Newmarket with the rest of the team and had an easy week to 10 days before coming back to full training,” Connett said. “She clearly showed the right signs for Charlie to aim her back here. She's travelled well and I'm really happy with her. All systems go for Saturday.”

Connett said the wide, sweeping turns at Belmont should suit Creative Flair.

“I think this course will help any of the European horses in the race that are used to a slightly more galloping type track,” Connett said. “Hopefully, with a longer straight and ideally sitting a little closer, it should really help.”

An Irish homebred, Creative Flair is out of the Shamardal mare Hidden Gold, whose dam Melikah is a half-sister to the late internationally acclaimed stallion Galileo and 2009 Cartier Horse of the Year Sea the Stars.

Jockey Jamie Spencer ships stateside to pilot Creative Flair from post 1.

Flaxman Holdings' Harajuku will look to give France a second Jockey Club Oaks triumph, after Edisa shipped to capture the inaugural edition in 2019.

Trained by Andre Fabre, the bay daughter of Deep Impact captured the Group 3 Prix Cleopatre on May 1 at Saint-Cloud going 1 5/16 miles over next out Group 1 winner Incarville. She arrives off a narrow fourth in the Group Prix de la Nonette on August 23 at Deauville.

An Irish homebred, Harajuku is out of the Galileo mare Phaenomena, who is a full-sister to Group 1-winner Nightime – the dam of 2020 Cartier Horse of the Year Ghaiyyath and Grade 1-winner Zhukova.

Jockey Stephane Pasquier, who guided Wonderment to a runner-up effort in the inaugural Jockey Club Oaks in 2019, ships from France to engineer the trip from post 7.

The Chad Brown-trained pair of Higher Truth and Shantisara are two of five other American-based contenders looking to defend their home turf.

Owned by Mike Ryan, Jeff Drown and Team Hanley, Higher Truth is the only filly to compete in all three legs of this year's filly division of the Turf Triple series. The daughter of Galileo was beaten by margins of less than a length in both the Belmont Oaks and Saratoga Oaks. After running third beaten a half-length to Santa Barbara in the Belmont Oaks, she missed by three-quarters of a length to Con Lima in the Saratoga Oaks, finishing second.

Higher Truth will be ridden by Jose Ortiz from post 2.

Shantisara, owned by Michael Dubb, Madaket Stables and Robert V. LaPenta, will see an increase in ground after making the grade in the Grade 3 Pucker Up at nine furlongs on August 14 at Arlington Park. The daughter of Coulsty made her second start in North America in the Pucker Up, which was her first victory on grass. Previously campaigned in France by trainer Frederic Rossi, Shantisara won twice over the all-weather surface at Chantilly and Marseille in her final two starts of last year.

Jockey Flavien Prat will ride from post 6.

Hall of Famer Shug McGaughey will give third-out maiden winner Baby Blythe a considerable jump in class following a seven-length romp on August 14 in a 1 3/16-mile maiden special weight at Saratoga.

Owned by Donald and Donna Adam's Courtlandt Farms, the daughter of American Pharoah displayed a devastating turn of foot around the far turn of her maiden score, going from a close fourth to in front by 5 ½ lengths at the next point of call. Third on debut in December at Aqueduct, Baby Blythe did not race until July 24 when sixth to subsequent stakes-winner Rastafara.

“Distance won't be an issue with her. She has a great turn-of-foot and had a half-sister [Family Way] who won going 10 ½ furlongs at Kentucky Downs,” McGaughey said. “She probably needed her second race since she hadn't run in so long. We got it in her and next time she won.”

Jockey Luis Saez, fresh off a riding title at Saratoga, will ride Baby Blythe from post 3.

Completing the field are Augustin Stables' Be Up [post 4, Irad Ortiz, Jr.], a two-time winner for trainer Jonathan Thomas, and Kaleem Shah's Madone [post 5, John Velazquez], a dual graded stakes winning West Coast invader for trainer Simon Callaghan.

The Jockey Club Oaks Invitational is slated as Race 9 on Saturday's 11-race card, which also features the $1 million Jockey Club Derby Invitational at 12 furlongs on turf in Race 10; as well as the $300,000 Grand Prix American Jockey Club Invitational at 13 furlongs on the main track in Race 4. First post is 1 p.m. Eastern.

Bye Bye Stretches Out In Friday’s Christiecat At Belmont Park

Bach Stables' Bye Bye leads a talented field of sophomore fillies in Friday's $100,000 Christiecat going six furlongs over the inner turf at Belmont Park.

Bye Bye, one of two entrants for trainer Christophe Clement, will see an increase in distance, arriving off a narrow third in the 5 ½-furlong Galway on August 15 at Saratoga Race Course. The daughter of leading sire Into Mischief received a ground-saving trip by jockey Joel Rosario last out, maintaining her inside position while gaining ground in the stretch but missed a neck to eventual winner Star Devine.

“She had a beautiful ride by Joel Rosario along the rail. It looked like she was going to get there but she just got caught in the last sixteenth of a mile,” said Clement assistant Christophe Lorieul. “She ran very game and I think she's back to herself.”

Bye Bye, the lone graded stakes winner in the field, tasted stakes success at Belmont Park in May in the Grade 3 Soaring Softly, breaking from the outside of ten other fillies and remained in the clear throughout the seven-furlong journey while holding off a late rally from Invincible Gal to produce a career-best 83 Beyer Speed Figure.

Clement will also saddle three-time stakes placed Honey Pants for owners Jim Bakke and Gerald Ibister, Honey Pants arrives off a runner-up effort in the Alywow on July 31 at Woodbine. She previously garnered black type when second in the Stewart Manor on November 7 at Aqueduct and followed with a runner-up effort in her seasonal bow in the Ginger Brew on January 2 at Gulfstream Park.

A gray or roan daughter of Cairo Prince, Honey Pants owns two career victories, both of which were at six furlongs on the Belmont turf. After breaking her maiden at second asking in wire-to-wire fashion by four lengths in October, she displayed different tactics when coming from off the pace in a June 20 allowance tilt, where she defeated next-out winners Too Sexy and Time Limit.

“She was second last time at Woodbine and now she is back on home court,” Lorieul said. “She's ran quite a bit. She broke her maiden last year with [jockey Manny] Franco aboard. She seems to be doing well at the moment.”

Rosario retains the mount aboard Bye Bye from post 10, while jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. will ride Honey Pants from post 9.

Arnaud Delacour will saddle Michael Hernon's Sussex Garden for her third start in North America. The Irish-bred daughter of Acclamation, conditioned in Europe by Jessica Harrington, seeks her first victory since a debut win last June over good going at Naas in Ireland. She followed with a second-place finish to subsequent dual Group 1 winner Mother Earth in the Group 3 Coolmore Irish EBF Sprint on July 4 at Naas ahead of a distant tenth in the Group 2 Lowther last August at York.

Sussex Garden made her debut for Delacour when fourth in the one-mile Wild Applause on June 26 at Belmont Park. She enters off a third-place finish when cutting back considerably in distance in a 5 ½-furlong allowance tilt on August 7 at Saratoga Race Course.

Delacour said his filly should appreciate the added furlong in the Christiecat.

“I thought she ran well last time running third to some good horses. I was pretty happy with the race,” Delacour said. “I like the added distance. The added six furlongs will fit her. I think the mile was a touch too long for her. She's one of those fillies that's in between, six to seven is probably her best distance.”

Displaying tactical speed in both of her stateside efforts, Delacour said he would like to see Sussex Garden show some early speed for Friday's race.

“I would probably try to use her speed and send her in front or close to the pace. I think she'll be more efficient like that,” Delacour said.

Hall of Fame jockey Javier Castellano will pilot Sussex Garden from post 2.

Shortleaf Stables' Caldee boasts a field-best $169,000 bankroll and seeks her first stakes victory for trainer Brad Cox.

Following a 6 ¾-length victory in her turf debut last August at Saratoga, the daughter of veteran champion-producing stallion More Than Ready garnered graded stakes black type when second to Plum Ali in the Grade 2 Miss Grillo in October at Belmont Park.

Caldee defeated winners, including subsequent stakes-placed Nevisian Sunrise, going one mile on May 28 over the Widener turf at Belmont. She followed her winning effort with a pair of runner-up finishes in the Christiana on July 3 over soft going at Delaware Park, and the Kentucky Downs Preview Dueling Grounds Oaks on August 7 at Ellis Park, where she finished behind next-out Virginia Oaks winner Flippant and ahead of next-out Dueling Grounds Oaks winner Adventuring.

Jockey Manny Franco will ride Caldee from post 5.

Completing the field are Bay Storm [post 1, John Velazquez], Orbs Baby Girl [post 4, Junior Alvarado], Can't Buy Love [post 7, Luis Saez], and Tuscan Queen [post 8, Jose Ortiz].

Union Gables [post 3, Luis Saez] and Patty H [post 6, Dylan Davis] have been entered for main track only.

The Christiecat honors Fox Ridge Farm's Grade 1-winning turf distaffer, who captured five graded stakes wins for trainer Patrick Kelly, including the 1992 Flower Bowl Invitational and the 1991 Diana. The daughter of Majestic Light retired with a 35-11-7-6 record and nearly $800,000 in lifetime earnings.

The Christiecat is slated as Race 8 on Friday's nine-race card, which also features the $100,000 Allied Forces in Race 7. First post is 1 p.m. Eastern.

Clement To Saddle Strong Duo In Friday’s Allied Forces Stakes

Trainer Christophe Clement will saddle Big Everest and Swashbuckle for their stakes debuts in Friday's $100,000 Allied Forces, a six-furlong Widener turf sprint for sophomores at Belmont Park.

Owned by Reeves Thoroughbred Racing, Steven Rocco and William Branch, the British-bred Big Everest garnered an 81 Beyer Speed Figure for a last-out maiden special weight score on July 23 traveling one-mile on the Saratoga Race Course turf.

With returning rider Joel Rosario up, the bay son of The Gurkha rallied from seventh to notch a 3 1/4-length score over firm going. Out of the graded-stakes placed Whywhywhy mare Long Face, Big Everest was purchased for $322,413 at the 2020 Goffs Arqana Breeze Up Sale.

“He was quite impressive when he broke his maiden,” said Clement assistant Christophe Lorieul. “He came off the pace and showed a great turn of foot. It might be a bit short for him but we hope that he can settle and make one big run.”

Jump Sucker Stable homebred Swashbuckle, a New York-bred son of Quality Road, graduated at first asking in October traveling 1 1/16-miles on the Belmont turf in a state-bred maiden event.

The dark bay colt won his seasonal debut sprinting seven furlongs against older state-bred allowance company in May on the Belmont turf, registering a career-best 80 Beyer. He followed with a close sixth, defeated less than three lengths, in a state-bred optional claimer traveling six furlongs on June 13 at Belmont.

Out of the multiple graded-stakes placed Rock of Gibraltar mare Sea Coast, Swashbuckle enters from a closing fourth in a 5 1/2-furlong state-bred optional-claimer contested over yielding Saratoga turf on July 21.

“According to the numbers, he fits right in there as well,” Lorieul said. “He's doing great and we're just keeping it short with him.”

Big Everest will exit post 6 under Rosario, while Eric Cancel retains the mount aboard Swashbuckle from post 8.

Sonata Stable's Arzak, one of two entrants for trainer Michael Trombetta, arrives from a nose score over Allied Forces-rival Smokin' Jay in the six-furlong Tom Ridge contested on the Presque Isle Downs synthetic on August 2.

The Not This Time bay, purchased for $575,000 at the OBS Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training, boasts a record of 5-1-1-1 over the turf, including an optional-claiming win in January at Tampa Bay Downs and stakes placings in the one-mile James W. Murphy [second] in May at Pimlico and the 5 1/2-furlong My Frenchman [third] over yielding Monmouth Park turf in July.

Ironhorse Racing Stable and Tami Bobo's Momos, trained though his first seven starts by Clement, will make his first outing for Trombetta. The Distorted Humor chestnut, runner-up in the My Frenchman two starts back, enters from a fourth in the Mahony at 5 1/2-furlongs on the Saratoga turf on August 11.

Momos was multiple graded stakes placed as a 2-year-old, finishing third in both the Grade 2 Saratoga Special on dirt and the Grade 3 Futurity on the Belmont turf ahead of a seventh in the Grade 2 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint in November at Keeneland.

Irad Ortiz Jr. will guide Arzak from post 3, while Momos will emerge from post 2 under Hall of Famer John Velazquez.

West Point Thoroughbreds and Marvin Delfiner's Jaxon Traveler has banked a field-best $390,210 while racing primarily on dirt for Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen.

The dark bay son of Munnings captured the Bachelor sprinting six furlongs over dirt at Oaklawn Park in April ahead of a second in the six-furlong Grade 3 Chick Lang in May on the Pimlico main track.

The versatile colt finished second in the six-furlong Woodstock in June over Tapeta at Woodbine Racetrack ahead of a strong third in the Grade 3 Quick Call in July sprinting 5 1/2-furlongs over good Saratoga turf.

The $140,000 OBS Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training purchase enters from a three-length win in the Star De Naskra at six furlongs on the Pimlico main track on August 21.

Jose Ortiz will pilot Jaxon Traveler from post 7.

Rounding out the field are multiple stakes placed Three Two Zone [post 4, Kendrick Carmouche]; stakes-placed Smokin' Jay [post 5, Luis Saez]; and maiden winner Ranger Fox [post 1, Javier Castellano].

The Allied Forces is slated as Race 7 on Friday's nine-race card, which also features the $100,000 Christiecat at six furlongs on turf for sophomore fillies in Race 8. First post is 1 p.m. Eastern.

Admission for the Belmont fall meet is available for just $5. Buy online at Ticketmaster.com or at the gate.
