Liam’s Map Pair Set To Duke It Out in Ack Ack

Stonestreet Stables' 'TDN Rising Star' Beau Liam (Liam's Map), unbeaten in three starts in the lower grades, takes a steep rise in class as he squares off with the well-traveled Rushie (Liam's Map) in Saturday's GIII Ack Ack S. at Churchill Downs. Each could book a ticket to this year's GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile, won in spectacular fashion by their sire at Keeneland in 2015.

The homebred turned in a freakish effort on debut, sitting off a quick pace, cruising past the front-runners under a hold and scampering home by 7 1/2 lengths en route to his 'Rising Star'. The bay was never given a breather in a loaded first-level Saratoga allowance July 17, but battled on bravely to best the talented Witsel (Nyquist) by a nose and backed that up with a six-length success in an Aug. 29 allowance at the Spa. He stretches out to Churchill's one-turn mile Saturday, the same course and distance over which his dam Belle of Perintown (Dehere) won the 2002 Pocahontas S.

Rushie ran with credit along the Triple Crown trail in 2020, finishing third in the GI Santa Anita Derby in early June and in the GII Toyota Blue Grass S. the following month before striking from just off the pace in the GII Pat Day Mile on the Kentucky Derby undercard Sept. 5. Seventh to Knicks Go (Paynter) in the Dirt Mile, he has yet to get his picture taken in four tries this term, but has run well, including placings in the Apr. 10 Oaklawn Mile and in the GII Charles Town Classic Aug. 27 over a nine-furlong trip that is beyond his best.

South Bend (Algorithms) has taken just one of his last 16 starts, but he is unbeaten in two outings around one turn beneath the Twin Spires, having graduated at first asking over six furlongs before adding the Street Sense S. at the track and distance in 2019. He returns to the dirt off unplaced efforts on the turf at Saratoga in August and last month at Kentucky Downs.

Undefeated Beau Liam Steps Up In Ack Ack

Stonestreet Stables' undefeated homebred colt Beau Liam will attempt to notch his fourth-consecutive win against 10 rivals that entered Saturday's 29th running of the $300,000 Ack Ack (Grade 3) at Churchill Downs.

The one-mile Ack Ack, which serves as a prep for the $1 million Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1) at Del Mar on Nov. 6, was carded as Race 10 with a post time of 5:26 p.m. First post is 12:45 p.m. The Ack Ack is part of a stakes doubleheader Saturday along with the $400,000 Lukas Classic (G3) headlined by the nation's top older horse Knicks Go.

Beau Liam began his career May 29 at Churchill Downs where he cruised to a maiden-breaking win by 7 ½ lengths in the six furlong dash. The son of Liam's Map shipped north to Saratoga where he narrowly defeated first-level allowance company by a scant nose in a swift seven furlongs on July 17. Most recently, the bay colt easily defeated second-level allowance foes by six lengths in a second-level allowance at Saratoga. Trained by Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen, Beau Liam will be ridden by Brian Hernandez Jr. from post No. 10.

Among Beau Liam's competition that entered the Ack Ack are several well-traveled graded stakes winners including Guest Suite, Mo Mosa, Mr Dumas, Plainsman, and Rushie.

The Ack Ack is named in honor of the 1971 Horse of the Year, Ack Ack. The multiple champion sprinter won the 1969 Derby Trial when he covered one-mile in 1:34.40, which broke the track record at that time.

Wednesday Pick 6 At Saratoga Bolstered By Sunday Carryover

The Pick 6 on Wednesday will be bolstered by a $161,541 carryover as the multi-race wager went unsolved Sunday at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

The $1 Pick 6 returned $538 to bettors who selected 5-of-6 winners correctly.

Sunday's sequence kicked off in Race 5 with Gerrymander [No. 3, $22.20] graduating at second asking in a six-furlong maiden special weight for 2-year-old fillies. Jockey Joel Rosario engineered the winning trip for trainer Chad Brown.

Hail To [No. 8, $43.60], a full sister to multiple Grade 1-winner Sadler's Joy, lit up the tote board when breaking her maiden at second asking over the inner turf going 1 1/16 miles for trainer Tom Albertrani in Race 6. The 2-year-old daughter of Kitten's Joy was piloted by jockey Ricardo Santana, Jr.

Santana, Jr. struck gold yet again when piloting Montauk Daddy [No. 5, $7.30] to a second straight victory for trainer Rob Atras in a 5 ½-furlong starter allowance over the Mellon turf course in Race 7.

Beau Liam [No. 1, $2.80] gave Santana, Jr. the hat trick in Race 8 when the son of Liam's Map remained unbeaten in three starts, capturing a second level allowance tilt at 6 ½ furlongs over the main track. Trained by Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen, Beau Liam was the lone favorite to win in the sequence.

Peter Brant's Sifting Sands [No. 8, $18.80] notched a third career win for trainer Chad Brown, capturing the $120,000 Better Talk Now [Race 9] in the sequence's penultimate leg. The son of Dubawi was ridden by Manny Franco.

Rounding out the sequence in Race 10 was Newcal Stable's New York homebred Chulainn [No. 6, 22.60], who scored her second lifetime win, taking a 1 1/16-mile starter allowance over the Mellon turf course for trainer Graham Motion with Rosario aboard.

Wednesday's Pick 6 kicks off in Race 5 at 3:21 p.m. Eastern and includes the $150,000 Grade 3 With Anticipation in Race 9. First post on the 10-race card is 1:05 p.m. Eastern.

Liam’s Map’s Beau Liam Brilliant Again at the Spa

BEAU LIAM (c, 3, Liam's Map–Belle of Perintown {GSW, $265,465}, by Dehere) showed Sunday just how well-stocked the Steve Asmussen barn is with top sprinters, as he zipped away to his third win from as many tries as day after stablemates Jackie's Warrior (Maclean's Music) and Yaupon (Uncle Mo) annexed the GI H. Allen Jerkens Memorial S. and GI Forego S., respectively. A shoe-in for 'TDN Rising Star'-dom off a 7 1/2-length debut drubbing at Churchill May 29, the bay was even-money in one of the toughest first-level allowances here in recent memory July 17, and out-nosed promising Chad Brown pupil Witsel (Nyquist) to earn a gaudy 106 Beyer Speed Figure. Looking like lock on paper here, the 2-5 favorite was pursued by Night Time (Majesticperfection) through swift splits of :22.14 and :44.92. Asked to quicken after straightening for home, Beau Liam hit another gear and quickly scampered away from his competition to air by six lengths. The victory was the third straight on the card for Ricardo Santana, Jr., who also rode both of Asmussen's Grade I winners Saturday, along with his GI Runhappy Travers S. runner-up Midnight Bourbon (Tiznow). Asmussen trained Liam's Map's first two Grade I winners, Basin and Wicked Whisper, and was represented on Friday at Monmouth by the very impressive debut-winning turf sprinter Cheeky Chaps (Liam's Map). The winner is half to Tomlin (Distorted Humor), MSW & MGSP, $251,895; and Strike It Rich (Unbridled's Song), GSW, $193,966, plus unraced 2-year-old filly Ari Oakley (Gun Runner) and a yearling filly by Good Magic.
