Lope De Vega’s Iberian On Top In The Champagne

Teme Valley and Ballylinch Stud's Iberian (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}–Bella Estrella {Ire}, by High Chaparral {Ire}) backed up a debut success at Newbury in June with a second in last month's G2 Vintage S. at Goodwood and continued on the upgrade with a decisive victory in Saturday's G2 Betfred Champagne S. at Doncaster.

Racing fourth of five behind a modest pace through halfway, the 3-1 chance powered forward inside the final quarter mile to gain a narrow advantage passing the furlong pole and was driven out to easily assert superiority by two lengths from Sunway (Fr) (Galiway {GB}). Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum's hitherto undefeated Rosallion (Ire) (Blue Point {Ire}) was unable to land a telling blow as the 4-5 favorite and finished 1 1/2 lengths away in third.

“He's a very exciting horse and that was just what the doctor ordered,” commented winning trainer Charlie Hills. “Listening to Tom [Marquand] when he came back, he said he gave him some feel, he's got an electric turn of foot and put the race to bed very well. His work had been unbelievable at home, so we just wanted him to show that on a racecourse and I think he's done that today. He learned plenty at Goodwood, where he was unlucky as he was drawn one, and I think William [Buick] was conscious to teach him how to do things properly. He was probably just a bit far out of his racing ground that day and inexperience caught him out, but he did finish well. The ground is still pretty soft today, but when the ground is quicker I think you'll see a better horse. It will be the [G1] Dewhurst next. He'll get a mile no problem, his dam stayed really well and I don't see why he can't be a [2000] Guineas horse. He's straightforward, with a great attitude, and he's so professional.”

Pedigree Notes

Bay Bridge Back With A Bang At Kempton

Sir Michael Stoute trainee Bay Bridge (GB) (New Bay {GB}–Hayyona {GB}, by Multiplex {GB}), winless in three Group 1 starts since annexing last term's G1 Champion S., regained the winning thread with a confidence-boosting success in Saturday's G3 Unibet September S. at Kempton.

The 8-11 favourite hit the board in both G1 Prix Ganay and G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup earlier in the campaign and went postward this first outing at the 12-furlong trip coming back off a fifth in the G1 Prince of Wales's S. at Royal Ascot. Bay Bridge broke well and was positioned fourth passing the judge first time before tanking along in third down the backstraight. Waiting patiently for the cutaway once turning for home, he quickened in style to seize control approaching the final furlong and stayed on strongly thereafter to easily defeat Candleford (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) by 3 3/4 lengths, becoming a record seventh winner of the contest for Stoute.

“We were unsure about the distance, so we've ticked that box and that's a real big plus,” said Stoute after adding another edition to his record haul. “We'll do some thinking now with the owners as to where we go next. The [faster] ground stopped him earlier in the season, so he had an enforced break. He was very impressive today and I like the way he did it.”

Lope De Vega’s Beauvatier Remains Unbeaten After Prix La Rochette Triumph

Yann Barberot trainee Beauvatier (Fr) (Lope De Vega {Ire}–Enchanting Skies {Ire}, by Sea The Stars {Ire}), who went three-for-three in July's Listed Prix Roland de Chambure at Deauville when last seen, continued his impressive rise through the grades with a comfortable victory in Sunday's G3 Prix La Rochette at ParisLongchamp.

The 3-10 favourite, who attained 'TDN Rising Star' status at Chantilly in May, was under a firm hold off the pace in fourth through the initial fractions of this pattern-race bow. Making smooth headway into contention in the straight, he quickened smartly to seize control approaching the final furlong and was pushed out in the closing stages to easily withstand the late bid of Evade (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) by a length. Fellow Rising Star Havana Cigar (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}) was a neck adrift in third.

“I am so delighted and how lucky we are to have such a young prospect who keeps winning all the time,” said winning owner Gitte Allaire. “I hope this is just the beginning of a long story. Maxime [Guyon] said he was very satisfied with the performance and the horse did exactly what he wanted him to do. Maxime could have asked him anything, he did the job and could have done so much more. We'll leave talk of the [Oct. 1 G1 Prix Jean-Luc] Lagardere to our trainer Yann Barberot. I want to congratulate Yann and the whole team.”

Pedigree Notes
Beauvatier, a €160,000 Arqana August purchase and half to a yearling filly by Siyouni {Fr}), is the first of two foals produced by Listed Prix de Thiberville runner-up Enchanting Skies (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), herself a sale-topping €500,000 Baden-Baden September yearling in 2016. The February-foaled dark bay's dam is one of four stakes performers out of Listed Kolner Fruhjahrs-Stuten-Preis third Estefania (Ger) (Acatenango {Ger}), headed by G1 Preis von Europa victor Empoli (Ger) (Halling). Estefania, in turn, is out of a half-sister to multiple Group 1-winning G2 German 1000 Guineas and G2 Preis der Diana (German Oaks) heroine Elle Danzig (Ger) (Roi Danzig). Beauvatier becomes Lope De Vega's 66th pattern-race winner.
