Mendelssohn Shuttling To Chile For Southern Hemisphere Breeding Season

Mendelssohn, the winner of the 2017 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, will stand the 2020 Southern Hemisphere breeding season at Haras Don Alberto in Chile, the South American publication Turf Diario reports.

The 5-year-old son of Scat Daddy recently completed his second Northern Hemisphere season at Ashford Stud in Versailles, Ky., where he was advertised for a fee of $35,000. His first foals are weanlings of 2020.

Mendelssohn is out of 2016 Broodmare of the Year Leslie's Lady, making him a half-brother to champion Beholder, leading commercial sire Into Mischief, and three additional stakes-producing mares. He sold to the Coolmore operation for $3 million at the 2016 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

The colt did a lot to make up that hefty ticket at two, finishing second in the Group 1 Darley Dewhurst Stakes in England before returning stateside to win the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf at Del Mar.

Mendelssohn came back at three to win the Patton Stakes in Ireland, then he ventured to Dubai, where he picked up convincing win in the G2 UAE Derby. The colt then came back to the U.S. to compete in the 2018 Kentucky Derby, and he'd spend the rest of his racing career competing in domestic stakes. He finished his sophomore season and his career with a second in the G1 Travers Stakes and thirds in the G1 Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes and G3 Dwyer Stakes.

In total, Mendelssohn retired with four wins in 13 starts for earnings of $2,542,137.

Mendelssohn covered 252 mares during his first season at stud in 2019, tying fellow Ashford Stud resident and son of Scat Daddy Justify for the most in North America that season.

American Pharoah Halter Headlines Iowa Aftercare Organization’s Online Fundraising Auction

American Pharoah, one of the most famous horses in the world, is helping Thoroughbreds whose lives are spent far outside of the limelight, especially when their racing careers are over.

A halter worn by the 2015 Triple Crown and Breeders' Cup Classic winner headlines the upcoming silent auction raising money for the Iowa-based Hope After Racing Thoroughbreds (HART) aftercare organization.

The halter was donated by Kentucky's Ashford Stud, where American Pharoah has been a stallion since retiring after the unprecedented season that saw him not only become the first horse in 37 years to sweep the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes but to also capture the Breeders' Cup Classic.

In its 10th year, HART's silent-auction fundraiser will be conducted entirely online, starting at noon on June 26 and concluding July 3 at 8:30 p.m. Central. The auction features other memorabilia, services, photos, paintings, tack and more. All the proceeds go to HART's care, rehabilitation, retraining and rehoming of retired racehorses from Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino. Those wishing to donate outside of the auction may do so directly through HART's website at iahart.org.

“We're so grateful to Ashford Stud for donating this halter worn by one of the all-time greats,” said HART president Jon Moss. “This is a chance for a racing, horse or sports enthusiast to own this priceless memorabilia while helping horses that don't have a set future when they are through racing. HART finds safe, loving homes for our retired racehorses, preparing them for second careers in the show ring, eventing, trail riding or simply as pleasure or companion horses.”

Since 2011, HART has worked closely with the horsemen at Prairie Meadows to provide Thoroughbred horses a soft landing after their racing careers are over.

HART is accredited by the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance and is a TAA grant recipient. Facilities and organizations that rehab, retrain and/or re-home horses receive support from the TAA after undergoing an arduous application process and are inspected annually to maintain accreditation. HART is Iowa's only TAA-approved organization.

HART's board includes a representative from the Iowa Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association, Iowa Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Associations, Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino and the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission.

“Our racehorses take care of us,” said Moss, who also is executive director of the Iowa HBPA. “All of us in racing owe it to take care of them when they are through racing. We thank Ashford Stud and American Pharoah for helping Iowa horsemen to do our part through HART. We also say thank you to all our contributors over the years without whose support HART would not continue to be the organization here to help horses find new homes.”

Belmont Winner Tiz The Law To Stand At Ashford Stud Upon Retirement

Last Saturday's impressive Grade 1 Belmont Stakes winner Tiz The Law will stand at Coolmore America's Ashford Stud on his retirement, but will continue to race for owners Sackatoga Stable throughout his racing career.

“Tiz The Law is the outstanding colt of his generation so we are obviously delighted he'll be coming here,” said Coolmore America manager Dermot Ryan. “From day one when he broke his maiden at Saratoga we have been watching him closely and he has everything one looks for in a stallion prospect. We are grateful to Jack Knowlton and his partners in Sackatoga Stable for letting us be a part of such an exciting horse, and also to Barclay Tagg, Robin Smullen and their team who have done a tremendous job with him. He's a Grade 1-winning juvenile and is now a Classic winner. Combined with his near perfect race record, he's very good-looking and is a very well-bred individual.”

His sire Constitution was second only to American Pharoah on the freshman sire table last year and leads the way in 2020, while Tiz The Law's dam Tizfiz was the winner of seven races including the Grade 2 San Gorgonio Handicap carrying top weight of 118 pounds.

“Tiz The Law is such a pleasure to be around, he impresses me every day with how easy he does everything, nothing is out of reach for him,” said trainer Barclay Tagg. “I have been training horses for such a long time and I have never had a horse like him, he makes my life very easy. We are looking forward to running him in the Travers then on to the Derby and Preakness. He has achieved so much already and is a very exciting horse for the future, I wouldn't change him for the world.”

Tiz The Law to Coolmore Upon Retirement

The GI Belmont S. winner Tiz The Law (Constitution–Tizfiz, by Tiznow) will stand at Coolmore America’s Ashford Stud upon his retirement, but will continue to race for owners Sackatoga Stable throughout his racing career, Coolmore announced Thursday morning. The colt, by the current leading second-crop sire Constitution, has won five of his six lifetime starts, including his impressive classic win last Saturday.

Constitution was second only to Coolmore’s American Pharoah on the 2019 first-crop sire list, and Thursday’s announcement means that Coolmore America will now stand three of the past five Belmont S. winners, as Tiz The Law will join Triple Crown winners American Pharoah and Justify at the Versailles, Kentucky nursery. Tiz The Law’s dam, Tizfiz, was the winner of seven races including the GII San Gorgonio H. carrying the top weight of 118 pounds.

After breaking his maiden in his two-year-old debut at Saratoga Aug. 8, 2019, Tiz the Law won the GI Champagne at Belmont by four lengths. He suffered a narrow loss in the GII Kentucky Jockey Club S., but has reeled off three straight graded stakes wins in 2020, including the GIII Holy Bull and the GI Florida Derby prior to the Belmont.
