First-Out Winner: Arrogate Colt Affable Monarch Headed To Champagne Stakes

After patiently waiting to get promising 2-year-old Affable Monarch to the races until last Sunday at Monmouth Park, trainer Jorge Duarte doesn't intend to show nearly as much restraint before giving the son of late Arrogate his first significant test.

An impressive 6½-length winner against Maiden Special Weight company, Affable Monarch's next start could be in the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park on Oct. 2 if the Colts Neck Stables homebred stays on schedule. The Champagne is a “Win and You're In” race for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile.

“I think the way he came out of this race and what he got out of this race, it was a good learning experience. It didn't take anything out of him,” Duarte said. “He cooled out very fast. The way he ran and galloped out I think he wants to go longer for sure.

“The Champagne is a one-turn mile with those sweeping turns. He's a big, big horse who should like that. We'll have a couple of breezes and if he keeps training the way he has been I would take a shot in the Champagne to see what we have.”

Kentucky-bred Affable Monarch became the just the second son of Arrogate to reach the winner's circle, with Adversity beating him there by an hour at Saratoga on Sunday.

Duarte said patience may be the key to any Arrogate offspring.

“I believe the Arrogates are a little late bloomers,” he said. “He just had his first two winners on Sunday. Maybe that is the way they are going to trend. I can just go by what I have. I have a couple of Arrogates and this is the first one I got to the races. I know I have an Arrogate filly that may be a late one.

“But it's also not a bad time of the year to get them started if you think you have a good one.”

Duarte's last try at the Champagne came in 2019, when Big City Bob finished third to Tiz the Law after breaking his maiden at Monmouth Park and winning the Sapling Stakes at the track.

He's also having the type of meet at Monmouth Park that suggests trying the Champagne may not be overly ambitious.

Duarte, Colts Neck Stables' private trainer, is 12-for-27 at Monmouth Park this year, having won with 10 of his past 19 starters. As a result, Colts Neck Stables tops the owner standings with 12 winners, five more than anyone else.

He has the added hope that Affable Monarch – who made his debut without Lasix — will be a good one because of the colt's dam, Social Queen. He's a half-brother to Grade 1 winner Force the Pass (Speightstown-Social Queen), who earned more than $1.3 million for Duarte and Colts Neck Stable.

He's also a half-brother to a Speightstown-Social Queen yearling who goes as Hip 154 in the first book of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale that starts on Sept. 13.

“We raced the mare (Social Queen), too,” said Duarte. “She has been very good to us.”

She may not be done returning dividends if Affable Monarch can live up to expectations.

“He's such a big colt. It just took him a little time to get into a rhythm,” said Duarte. “He was always well-regarded by us. We always thought the way he was training he had a chance to be a good one. We were very excited to bring him to the races because they don't come along all the time, horses like him.”

First Two Winners For Deceased Arrogate

Arrogate, the 2016 champion 3-year-old male who died in 2020 during his third season at stud at Juddmonte Farms in Kentucky, was represented by his first two winners on Monday from his initial crop of 85 foals.

Adversity, a New York-bred filly owned by DJ Stable and trained by Mark Casse, won a 2-year-old maiden special weight race under jockey Ricardo Santana Jr. at Saratoga over a sealed sloppy racetrack.

A short time later, the Colts Neck Stables' homebred colt Affable Monarch aired by 6 1/2 lengths in a maiden special weight race at Monmouth Park. Ridden by Tomas Mejia, Affable Monarch is trained by Jorge Duarte Jr.

Both juveniles are gray or roan.

Bred by Chester and Mary Broman, Adversity was a $335,000 purchase from the Sequel Bloodstock consignment at the 2021 OBS April sale. The filly was produced from Artemis Agrotera, by Roman Ruler.

Affable Monarch was a $425,000 RNA at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale. He is out of the Dynaformer mare, Social Queen.

Arrogate won seven of 11 starts racing at 3 and 4 years old, including four consecutive Grade 1 races: the 2016 Travers and Breeders' Cup Classic, followed by the 2017 Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes and Dubai World Cup. He was trained by Bob Baffert.

Arrogate's first 15 starters this year were winless.

The son of Unbridled's Song was euthanized at age 7 in June 2020 after showing signs of a sore neck and then falling in his stall, unable to get up. Hagyard Equine Medical Institute staff ran a series of tests on Arrogate to determine a cause and ultimately were forced to euthanize him when secondary health issues materialized.

Rapid-Fire Second Winner for Arrogate

4th-Monmouth, $56,125, Msw, 9-6, 2yo, 6f, 1:11.20, ft, 6 1/2 lengths.
AFFABLE MONARCH (c, 2, Arrogate–Social Queen {MGSW, $344,164}, by Dynaformer) gave his late sire (by Unbridled's Song) a second first-crop winner at Monmouth Park about 30 minutes after Adversity broke the mold up at Saratoga. The Colts Neck homebred, off at 13-5, was beaten for speed and trailed behind a quick pace through the opening exchanges. Equipped with a shadow roll for this first go, the gray colt made stealthy inside progress leaving the three-eighths pole, got through an inviting opening at the inside with a little less than a quarter-mile to race and careered away from his rivals to score by 6 1/2 lengths. Pioneer of Medina (Pioneerof the Nile) was second, while fast-working and regally bred favorite Courvoisier (Tapit–Take Charge Brandi) was third. The winner's dam was a dual Grade III winner on the turf, including the GIII Eatontown H. at this venue before going on to produce fellow turfer Force the Pass (Speightstown), GISW, $1,359,114, who stood his first season at stud in Maryland in 2020 before being sold to Saudi Arabia. Herself a daughter of SW and GSP Gal On the Go (Irgun), Social Queen is the dam of a yearling full-brother to Force the Pass (hip 154 in Keeneland September), was barren to Quality Road for this year and was most recently covered by Improbable. Sales history: $425,000 RNA Ylg '20 KEESEP. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $34,500. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.

Arrogate Represented By First Winner at the Spa

Sent off as part of an entry at just over 3-1, DJ Stable's Adversity (Arrogate–Artemis Agrotera, by Roman Ruler) became the first winner for her late freshman sire (by Unbridled's Song) with a second-out success Monday at Saratoga. Run over a main track that was downgraded from good to sloppy and sealed by a quick-passing storm, the grey filly–a debut seventh sprinting over the turf course Aug. 12–stepped well from an outside gate and pressed the pace from the outside beneath the hot-riding Ricardo Santana, Jr. Asked to win her race in upper stretch, she hit the front about a furlong from home and kept on to score by a comfortable 2 1/4 lengths despite failing to switch her leads late. The Honorable Ruth (Trinniberg) was second, while Adversity's entry-mate Carbon (Ironicus) closed for third.

Bred by Chester and Mary Broman, like DJ's GIII With Anticipation S. winner Coinage (Tapit–Bar of Gold), Adversity made a single appearance at public auction, fetching $335,000 at OBS April after breezing her eighth of a mile in a smooth :10 flat. Artemis Agrotera, who won the GI Frizette S. in 2013 and this track's GI Ballerina S. as a 3-year-old the following season, is also the dam of Adversity's SW half-brother Chestertown (Tapit), the $2-million topper at OBS March in 2019, and has a yearling colt by Into Mischief and colt foal by the Spendthrift maestro. Artemis Agrotera was most recently covered by Curlin.
