‘Getting The Classic Distances Won’t Be Much Of A Problem’ For Withers Winner Risk Taking

Klaravich Stables' Risk Taking made his stakes debut a winning one in Saturday's Grade 3 Withers at Aqueduct Racetrack.

Following the Withers, trainer Chad Brown praised Barry Eisaman, who broke the bay colt, noting that the professional performance by the son of Medaglia d'Oro came as no surprise.

“He's always been one we thought highly of and even when Barry Eisaman had him in Ocala, he's always liked him,” Brown said. “Everyone that's touched the horse has commented about how classy he was, the ability that he has and how he will get better with time and distance.”

After being purchased for $240,000 at the 2019 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, Risk Taking was shipped to Eisaman Equine in Williston, Fla., just outside of Ocala, where he remained until the following summer.

Eisaman said it didn't take long for Risk Taking to find his footing.

“He was just a very classy horse,” said Eisaman, who also broke previous Withers winners El Areeb (2017) and Max Player (2020). “He always acted like a high school student with a college student mentality. Everything we asked him to do, he acted like he had done it a million times already.”

Eisaman, who specializes in breaking, training and rehabilitating horses for a number of leading owners, said he is confident in being able to recognize a promising young horse by observing their day-to-day routine in his program.

“I watch a lot of horses go through this stage of their life, from the first day a saddle is set on them to when they're ready to go to their trainer,” Eisaman said. “To compare a horse like Risk Taking to the masses, every time a new task was put before him he would just go on and do it like he had done it before.

“We never know how good a horse is until the last final test is taken,” added Eisaman. “You can have horses do everything right, but you don't know how it pans out until they're in a field of horses and have some adversity thrown their way. He's stepped up and has made all of his early talents count.”

Eisaman added that Risk Taking, who picked up 10 Kentucky Derby qualifying points for his Withers win, appears to be a horse that can get a distance of ground.

“He really makes it look like getting the classic distances won't be much of a problem,” said Eisaman. “He's one of the ones that has now thrown his hat in the ring for Derby consideration. He's very Medaglia d'Oro looking. He's tall, leggy and looks like he would love two turns.”

Eisaman has enjoyed previous Triple Crown-trail success having helped to develop 2012 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner I'll Have Another, who went through the Eisaman Equine consignment at the 2011 OBS April Sale as a 2-year-old before being sold to Dennis O'Neill for $35,000.

Eisaman said the thrill and feeling of accomplishment of developing a rising star never gets old.

“We've been doing this a long time and we're very fortunate to have a client base that play at the top end of our sport. We get a lot of good quality prospects in and we try to get them safely to the races,” Eisaman said. “It's fun. Me and my whole family are all fans of this sport so it's fun to watch them along the Derby trail. There's a lot of tests to pass between now and Derby day, but to have one that looks like a promising contender is just awesome.”

Risk Taking is expected to make his next start in the Grade 2, $750,000 Wood Memorial presented by Resorts World Casino on April 3 at Aqueduct. That 1 1/8-mile contest is a 100-40-20-10 Derby qualifier.

Cuomo: New York Sports Venues Can Reopen Conditionally

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that sports arenas and stadiums with a capacity of better than 10,000 can re-open with limited spectators. The first event open to spectators in the state will be the National Basketball Association contest between the Sacramento Kings and Brooklyn Nets at the Barclay Center Feb. 23.

The opening of venues will follow the Buffalo Bills pilot program, deemed an “unparalleled success” by Cuomo, following guidelines including Department of Health approval for venues and events, capacity limitations, testing requirements, mandatory face coverings, temperature checks and assigned, socially distanced seating. There will be a 10% capacity limit in arenas and stadiums.

Officials at the New York Racing Association welcomed the news and will explore their options over the next weeks and months.

“Sports and entertainment venues in New York are responsible for tens of thousands of jobs and billions of dollars in economic impact. NYRA applauds Governor Cuomo for taking action today to get New Yorkers back to work and fans back in seats,” said Patrick McKenna, Senior Director, Communications and Media Relations for NYRA.

“NYRA is reviewing the newly announced guidelines to determine how they apply to Aqueduct Racetrack, where the first floor is currently the site of a New York State COVID-19 vaccination center, and to Belmont Park and Saratoga Race Course.

“NYRA has been conducting live racing without spectators in attendance since June 3 and we are eager to welcome racing fans back to our venues at the appropriate time and with the approval of the New York State Gaming Commission.”

Miss Brazil Easily Defeats Short Field In Monday’s Ruthless, Oaks Prep Up Next

Team D's Miss Brazil validated her heavy 2-5 favoritism, taking command from the gate and drawing away easily in the stretch for a 6 1/4-length victory in the $100,000 Ruthless for 3-year-old fillies on Monday at Aqueduct Racetrack.

The Ruthless, which was moved from Sunday to Monday after heavy snow forced the entire card to be pushed back a day, saw a three-horse field of Miss Brazil, Gulf Coast and Dealing Justice compete with It Can and Little Huntress scratched.

Miss Brazil, with Eric Cancel aboard from the inside post, led the compact field through the opening quarter-mile in 23.32 seconds and the half in 46.34 on the fast main track. Miss Brazil led handily out of the turn and had plenty left in the stretch, completing the seven furlongs in 1:24.92 in her sophomore bow.

Miss Brazil made her debut on Oct. 25, running third on the Belmont Park turf. Trainer Tony Dutrow said he thought the Palace Malice filly would prefer the main track, and she took to the surface with a maiden-breaking score on Aqueduct's dirt on Nov. 29.

Well-rested for her first start of 2021, Miss Brazil improved to 2-for-2 on the main track and returned $2.90 on a $2 win wager, besting Gulf Coast, who finished 45 3/4 lengths ahead of Dealing Justice, who was eased through to the wire.

“She's been very good in all three of her races,” Dutrow said. “Both her maiden win and today shows plenty. She's always promised to be a nicer kind of filly, so getting her ready for this race was easy. She's a better kind of horse and she does it all.”

Purchased for $170,000 at the 2019 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, Miss Brazil will now look to stretch out to a mile in the $250,000 Busher Invitational on March 6 at Aqueduct. The Busher offers 50-20-10-5 qualifying points to the top-four finishers towards the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks on April 30 at Churchill Downs.

“I'm feeling good about her at one mile at Aqueduct in the Busher,” Dutrow said. “I feel that won't be an issue for her. As far as two turns goes and her future after that, we'll have to wait and see how she does in the Busher.”

Cancel won his second consecutive stakes win after the rider piloted Risk Taking to victory in Saturday's Grade 3 Withers.

“I wanted to be on the lead to dictate the pace and take it from there,” Cancel said. “She's a very honest filly so I didn't have any doubts about her today. She's pretty straightforward and I had plenty of gas in the tank. I just wanted to give her a good ride and it worked out well.”

WinStar Stablemates Racing's Gulf Coast, conditioned by Rodolphe Brisset and ridden by Manny Franco, is 2-2-0 in four career stats, including runner-up efforts in the Sandpiper in December at Tampa Bay Downs and a stakes win in the Cash Run on New Year's Day at Oaklawn Park.

“The scratch of the speed [Little Huntress] hurt us a little bit given we were looking to stalk the pace,” Brisset said. “Nobody else could go with the favorite, so we had to go after her. Manny rode a great race. She may have broke a little slower than we were hoping for, but after that we just went on and tried to put pressure on the winner. But the winner was much the best.

“It's a long way to come to run second, but I'm happy with her race,” he added. “She tried hard. Hopefully, she can regroup and try another spot.”

Live racing at Aqueduct will continue on Friday with a first post of 1:20 p.m. Racing will be conducted four days this week, starting Friday and concluding Monday with a special Presidents Day holiday card.
