Maclean’s Music Firster Frolics In the Mud at Aqueduct

EL CAPI (c, 2, Maclean's Music–Nightlife Baby, by Flatter) was chilly on the board at 13-1 from a morning line of 6-1, but ran them off their feet in Saturday's second race at Aqueduct to open his account in impressive fashion. Hustled away from the inside gate by Jose Gomez, the bay was in front after 100 yards and had already opened an imposing advantage through a quarter in :22.03. Still going great guns after a half-mile in a slick :44.73, El Capi was under a vigorous hand ride through the final furlong and was well clear under the line. Hop Sing (Curlin), the well-backed 8-5 favorite, was off slowly, was deftly angled to the inside by Luis Saez on the turn and just managed to outfinish $1-million KEESEP graduate Conquest Warrior (City of Light), who was last into stride, took an overland route on the turn and stayed on gamely to be third at a lightly regarded 10-1. Having most recently sold for $220,000 at the OBS March Sale, El Capi had made three previous trips through a sales ring. A $35,000 Keeneland November weanling, he fetched the identical amount at last year's Fasig-Tipton February sale and made $75,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic sale last October. When mated with A.P. Indy-line dams, Maclean's Music has sired two of his four Grade I winners–Jackie's Warrior and Cloud Computing–while GSW & GISP Dance to the Music holds the same distinction. Fellow Grade III winner Classic Rock has a second dam by A.P. Indy. Nightlife Baby's foal of 2022, a colt by Good Magic, was a $60,000 KEENOV weanling purchase by Machmer Hall that was knocked down to Oracle Bloodstock for $230,000 at KEESEP this year. The weanling relation is another colt by Good Magic and Nightlife Baby was most recently bred back to Maclean's Music. Annual Sponsor-A-Family Program Highlights Holiday Season for NY Backstretch Community

Of all the events, activities, programs, and services that the New York Race Track Chaplaincy provides to the backstretch communities at Aqueduct, Belmont Park, and Saratoga Race Course, the Christmas Sponsor-A-Family program closes out the year in a very special way that touches the hearts of donors and families alike.

Months of preparation culminate with the distribution of food, clothing, toys, and gifts for approximately 250 families just before Christmas each year. (This year, the distribution will take place at the new Chaplaincy Center at Belmont Park on Tuesday, December 19, 2023.)

“It is almost impossible to describe the joy and gratitude these recipients feel each year,” said Karen Chavez, the general manager of the New York Race Track Chaplaincy. “Virtually all of the recipients are spending the holidays thousands of miles away from their place or birth and their original home and the donations to this program help them enjoy the holidays in a way that they could not otherwise afford.”

Chavez often hears directly from donors and how it “puts them in the Christmas spirit and helps them enjoy the holiday season a lot more.”

“They are all very glad to pitch in and we are eternally grateful for their humanitarian spirit,” she said.

In the Saratoga area, Stephen Sullivan, the owner of the Olde Bryan Inn restaurant in Saratoga Springs, provides a delicious dinner free of charge to recipients of the gifts which makes for a very special evening.

West Point Thoroughbreds and The Jockey Club Safety Net Foundation also serve as sponsors of the Sponsor-A-Family Program.

A year ago, the program was able to find sponsorship for every one of the families in need and Chavez said the Chaplaincy is striving to match that achievement in 2023.

“It has been a challenging year in many ways, and we would love to bless all these families again this year,” she said.

Integration Looks to Stay Perfect in Hill Prince

West Point Thoroughbreds and Woodford Racing's Integration (Quality Road), a fast-closing upset winner of the GIII Virginia Derby at second asking Sept. 9, will put his perfect record on the line in Saturday's GII Hill Prince S. at Aqueduct.

The $700,000 FTSAUG yearling graduate earned a 96 Beyer Speed Figure while defeating GI Saratoga Derby Invitational winner Program Trading (GB) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) in the Colonial Downs centerpiece.

“I thought he ran really good [last time],” trainer Shug McGaughey said. “I didn't know what to expect. It's not my style to run a maiden winner back in a stake, but it looked like the time to take a chance and it worked out.”

The Hill Prince field of nine also includes a trio from the Chad Brown barn. Equitize (GB) (Kingman {GB}) returns from the bench following a debut win on the Tampa grass back in March; the streaking Faraday (Ghostzapper), who enters off a narrow Kentucky Downs allowance score Sept. 10; and last year's GII Pilgrim S. runner-up 'TDN Rising Star' I'm Very Busy (Cloud Computing), who ended a five-race losing streak with an allowance win at the Big A Oct. 4.

Saturday's graded stakes action also includes the GIII Chilukki S. at Churchill Downs and the GII Kennedy Road S. at Woodbine.

The mare was acquired by Stonestreet for $1.45 million in foal to War Front at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton November Sale, and while that debut-winning colt Willakenzie was bought back for $575,000 at Keeneland September, Corporate Power was hammered down to Don Adam's Courtlandt Farm for $925,000 at the same auction last fall. The female family includes Group 1 winner Moanin (Henny Hughes), current leading freshman sire in Japan by winners with 35. Juddmonte homebred Sardis (Into Mischief) is a half-brother to GIII Cecil B. DeMille S. winner Verbal (Flintshire {GB}) and GSP Toledo (Into Mischief) and is out of a half-sister to MSW/MGSP Seismic Wave (Tapit) and to the dam of this year's G3 Ballyroan S. runner-up Valiant King (GB) (Roaring Lion).
