New App Allows For Real-Time Equine Temperature Monitoring, Location Dissemination And Data Sharing

Merck Animal Health has announced its strategic partnership with Irish-based technology company EquiTrace Ltd., creators of the EquiTrace™ platform. Through the EquiTrace smartphone app, the entire horse care team can securely update and access each horse's GPS location and medical record in one convenient location. The app also works in conjunction with Merck Animal Health's Bio-Thermo® microchips, allowing horse care professionals to instantly read, graph and monitor a horse's temperature.

“This partnership is a natural extension of our commitment to delivering innovative infectious disease management solutions to support improved horse care,” said Ron McDaniel, Director of U.S. Equine Sales, Merck Animal Health. “By enabling convenient digital temperature monitoring, we're able to make life easier for busy veterinary and farm teams while providing them with tools to help efficiently identify illness and monitor disease outbreaks.”

EquiTrace, which can be used with individual horses or at large barns, is compatible with any microchip but must be coupled with a Bio-Thermo microchip to access the temperature-sensing functionality. Bio-Thermo microchips measure a horse's temperature within one-tenth of a degree[1] and provide access to a horse's identification. Both the EquiTrace app and Bio-Thermo microchips work with the Global Pocket Reader Plus™ and the HomeAgain® UWSR+ microchip readers, and the EquiTrace app is available for iPhones or Androids. In addition, the Bio-Thermo microchip is compliant with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Standards 11784 and 1178 and meets requirements of both the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI) and the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF).

“We are excited to partner with Merck Animal Health to bring EquiTrace to the U.S.; the technology streamlines health recordkeeping, a task that has traditionally been hard to maintain in busy barns,” says EquiTrace founder Kevin Corley, BVM&S, PhD, DACVIM, DACVECC, MRCVS. “The combination of Bio-Thermo microchips with our software enables rapid identification of temperature fluctuations in a horse at the stroke of a microchip scanner. This is essential to managing infectious diseases, such as equine herpesvirus, influenza and strangles. As an internal medicine specialist, I'm delighted to contribute to a novel temperature monitoring system that's effective without stressing the horse or the barn team.”

EquiTrace data is encrypted, and each barn's data is private. The EquiTrace account owner authorizes others to access data securely through the app. All EquiTrace functions are available with no internet connection for easy access at the barn or on the road. New data is synced when the app is opened with internet connection. To download EquiTrace, visit the App Store or Google Play.

New Racehorse Management Technology In Australia Changes How Champion Trainer Waller Runs His Stable

A new automated platform created in Australia has taken racehorse care and management to the next level, according to horsetalk. The product is currently only being used in Australia and champion trainer Chris Waller said it has changed how he runs his stable.

StableWizard is an app that was created by Segenhoe Stud chairman Kevin Maloney. The system is cloud-based and gives trainers and stable staff instant access to all details of the horses in their care. The app is accessible via smartphone or tablet and transfers general horse management information such as temperature, feed checks, and treatment plans onto a dashboard for trainers, stable staff, or service providers to view at any time or location.

in Waller's stable, each horse has its temperature taken daily using a Bluetooth thermometer, with the results sent to StableWizard in real-time. The trainer of well-known race mare Winx said the data provided by StableWizard has improved the efficiency of his business and the care provided to the horses.

“Some processes that took two hours now take two minutes,” Waller said.

The founders of StableWizard believe the product will modernize equine management and they are aiming for it to become the new industry standard. Maloney says that the addition of more components to the app is planned. No information has been provided about wether or not this technology will make an appearance in the U.S.

OTTB United App Will Bring Together Retired Racehorse Buyers, Sellers

The Retired Racehorse Project and OTTB United jointly announce today the release of OTTB United, a mobile app that unites sellers, buyers, and shippers of Thoroughbred ex-racehorses and gives back to the Thoroughbred placement community. The app is designed to make the entire process, from listing a horse, to communicating between buyer and seller, to organizing shipping to a horse's new home, as easy as a few taps of a button.

The app is also designed to give back to the Thoroughbred placement community: a portion of the premium subscription fee is donated to the Retired Racehorse Project, which takes a market-based approach to Thoroughbred aftercare to drive demand for ex-racehorses; subscribers can select from a list of aftercare organizations and for-profit resellers to receive an additional contribution.

“We are so fortunate to partner with the Retired Racehorse Project,” says OTTB United founder Amy Rubin. “The organization's mission is at the center of everything we want to achieve, and helping off-the-track Thoroughbreds is our number-one goal. The Retired Racehorse Project has strengthened the Thoroughbred community, and it's our hope that the OTTB United app produced in partnership will unite that community on one platform.”

OTTB United was designed to meet the specific needs of the Thoroughbred industry and creates a network to help more ex-racehorses find good homes. Uniting sellers, buyers, and shippers on a mobile platform greatly simplifies the entire process from start to finish, and helps both buyers and sellers navigate changing rules on social media that prohibit animal sales.

“The RRP works to increase the market for Thoroughbreds after racing in the equestrian world and we are always seeking out new ways to make that process easier and more successful,” says RRP executive director Jen Roytz. “We understand and respect the reasons for social media sites to place animal sales posts under increased scrutiny and it has surely gone a long way to prevent unwanted animals to end up in the wrong hands. It has also, however, compromised the efforts of many upstanding and responsible Thoroughbred placement organizations who depend on the platforms to market their available horses to reputable homes. Through our partnership with OTTB United, we are able to offer a potential solution.”

OTTB United is free to download from Google Play and the App Store. A premium subscription is $4.99 monthly. The app is available in the US and Canada.
