Half-Sister To Derby Winner Always Dreaming Sells At Saratoga In Dilger’s Memory

One of the enduring images of the 2017 Kentucky Derby didn't come between the rails.

It was a cell phone video from inside McCarthy's Irish Bar in Lexington, Ky., where praise and cheers rained down upon on Gerry Dilger as he watched the colt he co-bred win the biggest race of his life.

Always Dreaming's triumph at Churchill Downs was a career highlight for Dilger, who bred the colt in partnership with bloodstock agent Mike Ryan under the moniker Santa Rosa Partners.

It was a powerful pairing, combining one of the industry's top consignors, in Dilger's Dromoland Farm, and one of the keenest buying eyes in the business, in Ryan; and the mare that made Always Dreaming, the Grade 3-winning blue hen Above Perfection, was their ace in the hole.

On Tuesday, when Hip 160 goes through the ring, it'll be a reminder of the good times, but it'll also be a curtain call for those who couldn't attend.

The Quality Road filly wearing the “160” sticker on her hip was the last foal out of Above Perfection, whose mating was planned by Ryan and Dilger in tandem. Dilger died in March 2020, a month before the filly was born.

A year later, on April 20, Above Perfection had a Justify colt, but she developed laminitis in the weeks that followed and soon succumbed at age 23.

Whether the reasons are physical, economic, or personal, every horse that goes through the ring in Saratoga Springs does so because they are special. Needless to say, this one carries a bit more weight for Ryan than the garden-variety special horse.

“It's very emotional,” Ryan said. “Gerry was my best friend. It's tough.”

Above Perfection had been a revelation for Ryan and Dilger. They bought the mare for $450,000 at the 2006 Fasig-Tipton November Sale, carrying a Dixie Union foal that would become Grade 1 winner and graded stakes producer Hot Dixie Chick.

Always Dreaming, by Bodemeister, was the seventh foal bred by Santa Rosa Partners. Two foals later, the mare produced the Pioneerof the Nile filly Positive Spirit, who won the Grade 2 Demoiselle Stakes.

The mare's final Justify colt was the 12th bred by the Santa Rosa operation, and her 14th overall. Ryan said he was aware that the mare's age was catching up with her, and he'd taken steps to ease her load by putting her foals on nurse mares in recent seasons. The plan had been to pension Above Perfection after her latest foal was weaned, but she went from healthy to laminitic without warning.

“She was one of these mares that put everything into her foals,” Ryan said. “She always had good muscle and strength herself. She was a powerful mare, and she was an easy doer. She took care of herself, and she never disappointed us. She dropped a very good foal.”

The mare's age was also on Ryan and Dilger's mind when they planned the mating that produced the Quality Road filly on offer Tuesday.

“He had a terrific year at the time,” Ryan said. “We wanted a proven horse, and he's a horse that we bred to early in his career. He's one of the top horses around. The mare had some age on her, and Lane's End were gracious enough to take her.”

The ensuing foal fit the bill of another successful filly on the page.

“This filly actually reminds me a lot of Hot Dixie Chick,” Ryan said. “She's a similar shape, similar size and stature, good length, good depth to her. She's got the same mind. All of them have a good mind. Hot Dixie Chick had the most unbelievable temperament – she was like a sheepdog, but when you dropped her on the rail, she was extremely talented.

“I'd say there's more of the mare in this filly than Quality Road,” he continued. “She's bred to go two turns, but she gives me the impression she'll have plenty of pace.”

Fillies with pages this deep don't often enter the commercial market, especially when the matriarch of such a strong family tree has recently died. Under normal circumstances, a filly like the one on offer Tuesday would be kept to join the breeder's broodmare band.

Ryan said the filly's entry in the sale was part of the process of moving on.

“To finalize Gerry's estate, this was the appropriate way to do it, to put her through the sale,” he said. “Obviously, a filly like this, you'd love to keep her for the long term as a racemare and a broodmare, because it's a pedigree we're familiar with. These kinds of fillies are hard to come by.”

Fasig-Tipton Releases New York-Bred Catalog

A total of 308 horses have been cataloged for the Fasig-Tipton New York-Bred Yearling Sale, to be held Sunday and Monday, Aug. 15 and 16 in the Humphrey S. Finney Sales Pavilion on the sales grounds in Saratoga Springs, New York. The New York-bred sale returns to its normal spot on the sales calendar after COVID-19 caused the New York-bred yearlings to be sold at the Selected Yearling Showcase in Lexington last September.

“We are thrilled to be conducting this sale back in Saratoga Springs–where it belongs–following last year's cancellation due to the pandemic,” said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning.  “We annually offer the cream of the New York-bred yearling crop at this auction, and the quality of sire power and conformation on offer this year is most impressive.”

As the New York-bred program has continued to thrive–state-bred maidens are running for $85,000, not to mention a robust state-bred stakes program at all of the New York tracks–the aforementioned sire power looks nothing like your typical regional sale.

A plethora of Kentucky stallions have youngsters cataloged for the sale, headlined by the 11 entered by Practical Joke, whose 'TDN Rising Star' Wit was so impressive in winning the GIII Sanford S. July 17. Constitution, whose son Tiz the Law fetched $110,000 from Sackatoga Stables' Jack Knowlton at this sale in 2018 and went on to win last summer's GI Runhappy Travers S., has eight in the catalog, while others include Candy Ride (Arg)– sire of impressive July 18 maiden winner Senbei–Distorted Humor, Hard Spun, Into Mischief, Liam's Map, Maclean's Music, Munnings, Nyquist, Street Sense, Uncle Mo and Violence. New York-based stallions include the reliable Central Banker, Freud and a dozen by the sadly departed Laoban.

Freshmen sires are also strongly represented in the catalog, including nine each for GI Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming (Bodemeister); Army Mule (Friesan Fire), whose first yearlings were coveted at Fasig-Tipton July last week; Good Samaritan (Harlan's Holiday); and Into Mischief's half-brother Mendelssohn (Scat Daddy).

Owing to the day's scheduled racing program at the nearby racetrack, Sunday's session is set to begin at 7 p.m., while Monday's round of bidding will begin at 12 noon.

The online catalog may be viewed by clicking here and will also be available in the Equineline sales catalog app. Print catalogs are also available.

Pletcher’s Reputation As Stallion-Making Trainer Continues To Grow With Kentucky Derby Hopefuls

Future Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher will have four entries in this year's Kentucky Derby, but his shadow over the race stretches much longer than just what's in his stable, through the pedigrees of other contenders, TVG Insider News reports.

Pletcher also trained the sires of four runners in the classic race: Mshawish (sire of his own runner Sainthood); Protonico (sire of Bob Baffert charge Medina Spirit); Belmont Stakes winner Palace Malice (sire of Wesley Ward's Like the King); and Constitution (sire of Hidden Stash, trained by Victoria Oliver).

Those runners are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Pletcher's footprint on the modern North American Thoroughbred breeding industry.

Seven of WinStar Farm's 21 stallions – a third of its roster – were former Pletcher trainees, including Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming, fast-rising Grade 1 Florida Derby winner Constitution, and stalwarts More Than Ready and Speightstown. His two alumni on the Ashford Stud roster are perennial top sires Uncle Mo and Munnings.

“I think one thing that Todd does well is he has a 2-year-old and 3-year-old program. I think that is what people want to breed to,” WinStar Farm's Elliott Walden told TVG Insider News' Alicia Hughes. “I think by getting them out early, having the ability to get them to the races and manage their careers, he gives them the best chance at stud. Obviously, the more stallions you put in the barn, the more successful stallions you're going to get out of it because you have more opportunity. And he focuses on developing stallions, he sees the big picture.”

Fantasy Winner Pauline’s Pearl Has ‘Improved Every Time,’ On To Kentucky Oaks

Pauline's Pearl continued her ascent in the 3-year-old filly division with a victory in the $600,000 Fantasy Stakes (G3) Saturday at Oaklawn.

A homebred for Stonestreet Stables LLC (Barbara Banke) and Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen, Pauline's Pearl earned a preliminary Beyer Speed Figure of 89, a career best, for her one-length victory over Ava's Grace to secure a spot in the $1.25 million Kentucky Oaks (G1) April 30 at Churchill Downs. The Kentucky Oaks is the nation's biggest race for 3-year-old fillies.

The royally bred Pauline's Pearl, by Tapit out of Grade 1 winner Hot Dixie Chick (a half-sister to 2017 Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming), was exiting a troubled second-place finish in her stakes debut, the $300,000 Honeybee (G3) March 6 at Oaklawn. Her Beyer figures, a numerical representation of performance, have improved throughout her five-race career, rising from 61 in her debut sprinting Dec. 19 at Fair Grounds, to 70, 74, 81 in the Honeybee and now 89. The last four starts for Pauline's Pearl have come at 1 1/16 miles.

“Just a tremendous pedigree,” Asmussen said. “Her mother, we had won a Grade 1 with, the Spinaway. Grade-1 winning mare for Stonestreet and the class shows.”

Pauline's Pearl ($3.80) represented Asmussen's record 94th career Oaklawn stakes victory and record fourth in the Fantasy. She was the 4-5 favorite after going off 18-1 in the Honeybee.

Pauline's Pearl was reunited with jockey Ricardo Santana Jr. for the Fantasy. Santana had ridden Pauline's Pearl in her career debut, but was aboard stablemate Willful Woman in the Honeybee (Will's Secret was a three-quarter length winner).

“She's a nice filly,” Santana said. “We've expected a lot from her since Day 1. I rode that filly short the first time at Fair Grounds and she ran good. We always expected to run her long. The last four races she's run long, she's improved every time.”

Pauline's Pearl collected 100 Kentucky Oaks qualifying points for her Fantasy victory and ranks No. 4 on the leaderboard with 120, according to Churchill Downs. The 1 1/8-mile Kentucky Oaks is limited to 14 starters, with starting preference given to horses with the highest point totals earned in designated races like the Fantasy. Will's Secret is No. 8 with 80 points. She also won Oaklawn's $200,000 Martha Washington Stakes Jan. 30.

Last year's Fantasy winner, Swiss Skydiver, finished second in the rescheduled Kentucky Oaks (COVID-19) en route to an Eclipse Award as the country's champion 3-year-old filly. Fantasy third Shedaresthedevil won the Kentucky Oaks for co-owner Staton Flurry of Hot Springs.

Santana, Asmussen and Stonestreet teamed to win the 2016 Fantasy with Terra Promessa, who finished 10th in the Kentucky Oaks.

Asmussen won Oaklawn's $60,000 Prima Donna Stakes for 3-year-old filly sprinters in 2010 with Hot Dixie Chick.
