Belmont Day Generates $98 Million In All-Sources Handle

Saturday's Belmont S. Day card, highlighted by Mo Donegal (Uncle Mo)'s victory in the 154th running of the $1.5 million GI Belmont S. presented by NYRA Bets, generated all-sources handle of $98,766,906.

On-track handle for the 13-race program, which included eight top-level races among nine total stakes, was $9,530,303. All-sources handle for the Belmont S. presented by NYRA Bets alone was $50,248,624.

The three-day Belmont Stakes Racing Festival, which featured 17 stakes and 33 races in total from Thursday through Saturday, June 9-11, generated all-sources handle of $127,810,604.

The construction of UBS Arena, which opened its doors to the public in November, has significantly altered and reduced the size of the Belmont Park backyard. As a result of this change to the property, Belmont Park is currently operating at fan capacity of 50,000.

Paid attendance on Belmont Stakes Day was 46,301.

Aqueduct Spring Draws over $115M in Handle

The recently concluded 15-day spring meet at Aqueduct Racetrack generated $115,750,073 in all-sources handle, a 35.5 percent increase over the 11-day spring meet held in 2021, according to The New York Racing Association, Inc. Wednesday.

On-track handle for the 2022 Aqueduct spring meet, which includes wagering from New York State residents utilizing NYRA Bets, was $11,332,663. The 2021 Aqueduct spring meet, which was conducted without fans in attendance, saw on-track handle of $5,734,531. Average daily handle for the spring meet was $7,716,672 compared with $7,765,368 in 2021. The 2022 Aqueduct meet included 134 races with 37 on the turf. A total of 95 races were held with 29 on the turf. Average field size was 7.00 in 2022 compared with 7.16 in 2021.

NYRA’s Total Handle Tops $2.37 Billion In 2021; Average Daily Handle Up 21.6 Percent From 2019

The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) today announced that its 2021 race meets conducted at Aqueduct Racetrack, Belmont Park and Saratoga Race Course generated all-sources handle of $2,373,772,916 and average daily handle of $11,809,816 over 201 race days.

Average daily handle on the NYRA circuit has increased 21.6 percent since 2019, when average daily handle over 217 race days was $9,714,868. Average daily handle in 2020, which featured 157 race days, was $11,553,727.

All sources handle for 2021 was $265,646,547 higher than 2019, an increase of 12.6 percent; and $559,837,825 higher than 2020, a 30.9 percent increase.

Average field size for the 1,887 races completed in 2021 was 7.68, a 3.9 percent increase over 2019 and a 1.8 percent decrease from 2020.

On-track handle in 2021 totaled $266,978,634 compared with $152,114,600 in 2020 and $310,053,754 in 2019.

Travers Day Card Generates $51 Million In All-Sources Handle

The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) today announced that the 13-race Runhappy Travers Day card generated all-sources handle totaling $51,381,515 at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

A paid crowd of 44,507 witnessed Essential Quality secure victory in the Runhappy Travers for reigning Eclipse Award-winning trainer Brad Cox and jockey Luis Saez. Essential Quality, owned by Godolphin, posted a final time of 2:01.96 in the 152nd running of the $1.25 million Grade 1 Runhappy Travers. With today's victory in the Runhappy Travers, Cox becomes just the third conditioner to sweep the Whitney and Travers in the same summer with two different horses.

On-track handle was $9,406,526.

NYRA was honored to welcome New York Governor Kathy Hochul to Saratoga Race Course on Saturday, where she presented the Man o' War Cup to the connections of Essential Quality. On Tuesday, August 24, Gov. Hochul made history by becoming the first female governor in New York State history.

For the third consecutive year, fans nationwide watched the Runhappy Travers action unfold on the FOX Broadcast Network as part of a special 90-minute telecast. Overall, the FOX Sports family of networks broadcast 7 ½ hours of live racing action from Saratoga which included all seven graded stakes on Runhappy Travers Day.

The Runhappy Travers was the centerpiece of a card featuring six Grade 1s among seven stakes in total, including the $750,000 Grade 1 Resorts World Casino Sword Dancer; $600,000 Grade 1 Personal Ensign presented by Lia Infiniti; $500,000 Grade 1 Ketel One Ballerina; $600,000 Grade 1 Forego; and $500,000 Grade 1 H. Allen Jerkens Memorial. Rounding out the blockbuster card was the $400,000 Grade 2 Ballston Spa.
