Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation Launches 2020 Hay Drive With $60,000 Matching Gift

The Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation (TRF) has received a $60,000 matching gift from the Santulli Family Foundation to launch the 2020 Hay Drive challenge–Hay, Oats and Water. The Santulli's will match every dollar donated to the TRF up to $60,000 for this campaign. The TRF's goal for the 2020 Hay Drive is $120,000 to cover the cost of hay for the hundreds of former racehorses currently in their care.

The TRF Hay Drive is one of the most important campaigns for the organization, now in its 37th year of providing sanctuary, retirement and second chances for Thoroughbreds no longer able to compete on the racetrack. The campaign will be conducted by direct mail, email and social media as well as one-on-one donation requests.

“Hay is one of our largest horse care expenses and the most important element of a horse's diet, particularly in the winter.” says Jennifer Stevens, Director of Development at the TRF.

Last year, with the help of the Santulli Family Foundation, the TRF had its most successful Hay Drive to date and the organization is hopeful that this year's response will equal or surpass last year's campaign.

“The Santulli's are longtime supporters of the TRF having funded several areas of need for the organization throughout the years. We are immensely grateful for their contributions to the TRF and the Thoroughbred aftercare effort.” said Patricia Stickney, TRF Executive Director. “Their generous gift will not only help our horses but inspire others to do the same.”

Maintaining Magoo’s eligibility for the 2021 Thoroughbred Makeover through the fall is turning out to be a little harder than I had expected — we cannot go over 15 retraining rides prior to Dec. 1. With him feeling his best again, he continually reminds me how trainable he is, and I am getting extremely excited to get him started on the path to his second career. TRF Blackburn 2020 Horse Show to be Livestreamed on Oct. 20

Building on the success of the 20th anniversary TRF Blackburn Horse Show hosted in 2019, the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation (TRF) and the Blackburn Correctional Complex (BCC) will host the TRF Blackburn 2020 Horse Show on Tuesday, Oct. 20. A global audience will tune in to experience a compelling demonstration of horse-handling skills, equine knowledge and the transformational impact of the TRF Second Chances Program.

Thoroughbred Incentive Program, U.S. Polo Association To Offer Thoroughbred Polo Awards

The Thoroughbred Incentive Program (T.I.P.) and United States Polo Association® (USPA) announced today that they will recognize Thoroughbreds that are excelling as polo horses through six awards that will be offered annually, starting this year. For a Thoroughbred to be eligible for these awards, it must have a T.I.P. number. There is no charge for a T.I.P. number.

“Polo is just one of many disciplines in which Thoroughbreds can succeed following their racing careers, and T.I.P. is pleased to partner with the USPA to honor the accomplishments of these horses at all levels of polo,” said Kristin Werner, senior counsel of The Jockey Club and coordinator of T.I.P.

Each award winner will receive an award sash and special logo prizes. The categories for each award are:

High Goal Horse: for a Thoroughbred that has played in at least one USPA Outdoor Tournament in 2020 and scored more than 16 goals in total.
Medium Goal Horse: for a Thoroughbred that has played in at least one USPA Outdoor Tournament in 2020 and scored eight to 16 goals in total.
Low Goal Horse: for a Thoroughbred that has played in at least one USPA Outdoor Tournament in 2020 and scored fewer than eight goals in total.
Arena Polo Horse: for a Thoroughbred that has played in at least one USPA Arena Tournament in 2020.
Lesson Horse: for a Thoroughbred used in a lesson program at a USPA club.
Intercollegiate/Interscholastic (I/I) Horse: for a Thoroughbred that has played in an I/I Regional or National Tournament in 2020.

“The USPA is excited to work with the Thoroughbred Incentive Program to highlight the Thoroughbred's long history in the sport of polo,” said Justin Powers, executive director of the United States Polo Association Polo Development LLC.

Applications will open on the T.I.P. and USPA websites on November 1 and close November 30. The winners will be announced in January and selected based on the application and an essay. Applicants will be judged by a committee formed by the USPA and T.I.P.

Created and announced in October 2011, T.I.P. recognizes and rewards the versatility of the Thoroughbred through sponsorship of Thoroughbred classes and high point awards at sanctioned horse shows, year-end performance awards, a recreational riding program, and non-competition awards.
