Elite summer race meets at Saratoga and Del Mar are now in full swing, and TV coverage for the weekend ahead focuses on big races at both tracks – the Coaching Club American Oaks at Saratoga and the Bing Crosby Stakes at Del Mar,
Horse Racing Explained: What Is a Dead Heat?
Horse racing has many different terms to measure margin of victory. Going from closest to largest, a horse can win by a nose, head, or neck, by fractions of a length, or by a length or more (a length is, as you might guess, the estimated length of a racehorse, roughly eight feet). But sometimes, there is no margin to measure – the horses reach the finish line equally together. When that happens, the familiar term “dead heat” is applied, usually after a several-minute wait while the racetrack stewards examine the finish line photo.
Del Mar History: The ‘Other Arrogate’ and Longden’s World Record
Once upon a time, a long time ago, a horse named Arrogate entered the spotlight with a series of victories in prominent stakes races. Wait a minute – “a long time ago?” Wasn’t Arrogate at the peak of his powers 9-10 years ago, winning such prestigious events as the 2016 Breeders’ Cup Classic and the 2017 Pegasus World Cup?
