After Small Setback, Trainer Joe Sharp Will Undergo Another Surgery Wednesday
Trainer Joe Sharp underwent a 10-hour surgery to remove a benign brain tumor in June, but the 35-year-old may have gone back to working at the track a bit too quickly. According to Horse Racing Nation, Sharp had to be admitted to the hospital on July 6, where he spent five days after the diagnoses of “a tear in the skin of the brain that apparently was caused by exertion.”
When a less invasive procedure didn't solve the problem, doctors determined Sharp would require another surgery. He will return to the site of the first surgery, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Tx., to undergo the second surgery on Wednesday, this time lasting about three hours. One of his owners, Brad Grady, is sending his private plane to transport the trainer.
“It's sent a message to both of us that we have to slow down,” echoed Napravnik. “Especially at the racetrack, that is so hard to do.”

Prix Maurice de Gheest Target for Golden Horde
Golden Horde (Ire) (Lethal Force {Ire}), a winner of the G1 Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot in June, will next take part in the G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville on Aug. 9. Clive Cox has earmarked that French feature for his charge, who most recently ran third in the G1 July Cup on July 11. As a juvenile, the Al Mohamediya Racing colourbearer scooped the G2 Richmond S. and was third and second, respectively, in the G1 Prix Morny and G1 Middle Park S.
“It’s day-by-day with these sort of horses, but I would say the Maurice de Gheest is the likely target, as long as we are happy with him at home,” said trainer Clive Cox. “He won the Commonwealth Cup, and we thought he came out of the race well, but the July Cup might have come soon enough.”
G2 Coventry S. victor Nando Parrado (GB) (Kodiac {GB}) has recovered from his setback that saw him out of the G2 Prix Robert Papin. He is also slated for a Group 1 contest, the G1 Prix Morny at Deauville on Aug. 23.
“Nando Parrado had a slightly easier week after he had to miss the Robert Papin,” said Cox. “Hopefully the Prix Morny will still be the next target for him.”
