Hubrisko Tops ThoroughBid September Sale

Doctor Dino (Fr)'s Hubrisko (Fr) (lot 23) took top honours at the ThoroughBid September Sale on Wednesday.

He was knocked down for £50,000 to Normans, Ramsay, Tufnell & Bishop and was consigned by trainer Willie Mullins.   The 6-year-old won a beginner's chase three weeks ago and is rated 137 over fences.

The mixed sale featured 25 lots, with 12 sold (48%) for a gross of £99,500.

CEO of ThoroughBid, James Richardson, said, “It's been a real pleasure to have handled the sale of another smart horse at a great price for Mr. and Mrs. Ricci and Willie Mullins.

“Hubrisko's new connections will have many big days out ahead of them with this quality gelding, and we can't wait to see how he gets on.”

Live On NBC: Shirl’s Speight, War Bomber Lead Saturday’s ‘Win And You’re In’ Woodbine Mile

Shirl's Speight, runner-up in last year's FanDuel Breeders' Cup Mile (G1), and local turf star War Bomber (IRE) lead the six-horse field for Saturday's $1 million Ricoh Woodbine Mile (G1) at Woodbine Racetrack in Canada, live on NBC and Peacock beginning at 5 p.m. ET. The race winner will earn a free berth into this year's $2 million FanDuel Breeders' Cup Mile (G1) through the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series: Win and You're In.

The Ricoh Woodbine Mile, for 3-year-olds and up at a mile on turf, headlines the second program this year in the “Breeders' Cup Challenge Series: Win and You're In” on NBC, CNBC, and Peacock from North America's most iconic racetracks. The series leads to the 40th Breeders' Cup World Championships Nov. 3-4 at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. The complete series viewing schedule can be accessed here.

Saturday's broadcast will also include the 1-mile Johnnie Walker Natalma Stakes (G1) at 1 mile on the turf, which precedes the Woodbine Mile. The Natalma Stakes winner will receive an automatic starting position into the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1).

NBC Sports' coverage will feature commentary and discussion from analysts Randy Moss and Hall of Fame jockey Jerry Bailey, reporter Britney Eurton, and handicappers Eddie Olcyzk and Matt Bernier.

Charles Fipke's Shirl's Speight, a 6-year-old trained by Roger Attfield, made up huge ground in the stretch of last year's FanDuel Breeders' Cup Mile at Keeneland, finishing just three-quarters of a length behind Modern Games (IRE), who also won the 2022 Ricoh Woodbine Mile. Shipped overseas for races at the start of this year, Shirl's Speight finished 9th in the February Stakes (G1) at Tokyo Racecourse in February and ran fourth in the Dubai Turf (G1) at Meydan in March. Making his home debut this season at Woodbine on Aug. 19, Shirl's Speight finished fourth in the 1-mile King Edward Gold Cup (G2) as the 9-5 favorite. John Velazquez will ride Shirl's Speight from post three. The Hall of Fame jockey has won five editions of the Woodbine Mile and also rode two of those winners – Da Hoss and Wise Dan – to victory in the Breeders' Cup Mile.

Bruno Schickedanz's 5-year-old gelding War Bomber won the King Edward by a neck, stalking the pace and holding off Treason to register his seventh victory at Woodbine, and his first triumph this year in four starts. Trained by Norm McKnight, War Bomber will try to improve on his ninth-place finish in last year's race. Rico Walcott has the mount, breaking from post two.

Trainer Charlie Appleby saddled Modern Games to victory in last year's race and later in November to victory in the FanDuel Breeders' Cup Mile. This year, Appleby has entered Godolphin's 5-year-old gelding Master of the Seas (IRE), who will be making his North American debut. A winner twice in four starts this year, Master of the Seas returned from a 3 1/2-month layoff with a rousing 4-length victory in the July 15 Fred Crowley MBE Memorial Summer Mile Stakes (G2) at Ascot in England. William Buick has the mount breaking from post one.

Trainer Mark Casse, a two-time winner of both the Woodbine Mile and the Breeders' Cup Mile, has entered three horses, led by Gary Barber, Wachtel Stable, and Peter Deutsch's Ice Chocolat (BRZ), who will be making his second attempt this summer to earn a Breeders' Cup Challenge Series berth in the FanDuel Breeders' Cup Mile. On Aug. 12 at Saratoga Race Course, Ice Chocolat delivered a solid third-place performance, defeated by less than two lengths, behind Casa Creed and Annapolis in the Fourstardave Handicap (G1). Joel Rosario will ride Ice Chocolat from post four.

Completing the field are Casse's other starters: Gary Barber's My Sea Cottage (IRE), fourth in the Fourstardave, and Pantofel Stable, LLC, Wachtel Stable, and Barber's Canadian-bred Lucky Score, third in the King Edward Stakes. Dylan Davis will ride My Sea Cottage from post five and Sahin Civaci has the mount on Lucky Score from stall six.

A field of 15 has been entered for the Natalma Stakes, for 2-year-old fillies, and is led by the first two finishers from Woodbine's Aug. 20 listed Catch A Glimpse Stakes, when X-Men Racing 3, StarLadies Racing, Madaket Stables LLC, and SF Racing LLC's Airosa defeated Gary Barber and D.J. Stable LLC's Ready to Jam by 1 length.

Steeplechase: Merry Maker Springs 15-1 Upset In Grade 1 Lonesome Glory

Hurricana Farm's Merry Maker rallied from the back of the pack under Parker Hendriks to capture Thursday's Grade 1, $150,000 Lonesome Glory Handicap, a 2 1/2-mile steeplechase for older horses on Opening Day of the Belmont at the Big A fall meet.

The 6-year-old Irish-bred son of Malinas topped an Archibald Kingsley, Jr.-trained trifecta over stablemates L'Imperator and Barbados as they successfully thwarted the return of multiple Grade 1-winning 1-2 mutuel favorite Snap Decision, who led the field throughout much of the running over the good going.

“It doesn't get any better,” said Kingsley, Jr. on the personal trifecta. “We didn't want to leave Snap Decision alone and go too easy on the front. I thought, of my horses, L'Imperator was the best one that had a chance to keep it honest and yet, you don't want to sacrifice any of them because they all had a good shot. I think everybody rode their horses to give them the best chance and it worked out. L'Imperator ran a winning race and Parker got him at the last run.”

The Graham Watters-piloted Snap Decision, assigned a field-high 162 pounds, carried 20 pounds more than the vast majority of his six rivals as he led the field past the wire for the first time with Restitution to his outside in second and L'Imperator saving ground in third. City Dreamer and Barbados tracked in fourth and fifth respectively in front of the tandem of Proven Innocent and Merry Maker.

Merry Maker was still last-of-7 as Snap Decision took the field past the wire for the second time, but the competition started to gain ground on the frontrunner approaching the final fence with Proven Innocent looming large to the outside of L'Imperator. Hendriks gave Merry Maker his cue approaching the far turn and had plenty of ground to make up as L'Imperator took over from a tiring Snap Decision at the stretch call. Hendriks kept to task aboard Merry Maker with a seven-wide charge down the lane, quickly closing the gap on a game L'Imperator to secure the half-length win in a final time of 4:41.02.

It was a further 5 1/2-lengths back to Barbados in third with Snap Decision, City Dreamer, Proven Innocent and Restitution rounding out the order of finish. The Kingsley, Jr.-trained Cibolian was scratched.

The victory marked the first Grade 1 score for Hendriks and also his first win since recovering from a concussion.

“After we jumped the last, I kind of got a bit light and I went for him [Snap Decision],” Hendriks said. “Half-way around the bend I was like, 'I could get here.' I knew the horse to beat was Snap Decision, and I could see he was fading and L'Imperator, who I had ridden previously, I thought he would run a big race today, too. He stopped a little bit and my guy just kept grinding to the wire. He was all guts and all heart to get it done today. It's a massive credit to the team.”

Stephen Mulqueen, who piloted the runner-up L'Imperator, said his charge traveled gamely to keep Snap Decision honest.

“I followed the one [Snap Decision], who I thought was the one to beat. We turned in and I quickened up to go on and win the race, but I just got beat late,” Mulqueen said. “It's difficult when on paper there's one horse to beat like there was in here. I didn't want to let him [Snap Decision] have a freebie in front. Ideally, we'd drop him a little further back and make one big run. If Graham was getting a freebie in front, someone had to put the pressure on him. But he ran a great race to finish second.”

The lightly-raced Merry Maker, who launched his career in his native Ireland, won his stateside debut for Kingsley, Jr. in October 2021 at Great Meadow but was off-the-board in both of his starts last season. He kicked off his current campaign with an allowance win at Great Meadow in May ahead of a distant third in the Jonathan Kiser Novice in August at Saratoga Race Course. He entered from a rallying fourth on August 23 in the Spa's Grade 1 Jonathan Sheppard Handicap in which he closed from last-of-10 to finish 8 1/4-lengths back of the victorious Awakened.

Kingsley, Jr. said Merry Maker benefitted from his first Grade 1 experience.

“The horse is relatively lightly-raced next to a horse like City Dreamer or Snap Decision,” Kingsley, Jr. said. “He ran down a little bit in front in the Sheppard so I had rundowns on everybody today. I have to believe that probably took a little bit away from him. It's a journey with these horses, they develop over time and it takes time to grow into this kind of horse. You're looking at a progression of a horse in his development.”

L'Imperator, who captured last year's Grade 2 Fort Marcy on the flat at Belmont Park for trainer Chad Brown, was purchased by his owner Hudson River Farms for $75,000 in November at the Keeneland Horses of Racing Age Sale.

He has since made six starts over the jumps, including a sharp 8 3/4-length allowance win in July at Saratoga. The 6-year-old Holy Roman Emperor gelding entered from a fifth-place finish in the Jonathan Sheppard.

“[L'Imperator] is a horse that's been thrust into Grade 1s probably before you would ideally do it, but it's a confluence of circumstances that make it possible,” Kingsley, Jr. said. “With the last jump so close to the wire, you're inclined to take a shot with a horse like him. I wouldn't want to run down two fences in the stretch toe to toe with Snap Decision. Experience counts for so much in steeplechasing and with the format at the major tracks now, it's a little better for the lesser experienced horses to take a shot in a race like this.”

Kingsley, Jr. said he would like to point all four of his Lonesome Glory entrants to the Grade 1 American Grand National on October 21 at Far Hills.

Bred in Ireland by Matthew Hayes, Merry Maker banked $90,000 in victory while improving his 2023 record to 4-2-0-1. He returned $33.80 for a $2 win bet.

The Lonesome Glory was the first of four Grade 1 events at the Belmont at the Big A fall meet which runs through Sunday, October 29. The 28-day meet offers a total of 44 stakes worth $9.275 million in total purses and six Breeders' Cup “Win and You're In” qualifiers.

Live racing resumes Friday at Belmont at the Big A with a nine-race card featuring the $135,000 Winter Memories in Race 8. First post is 1:05 p.m. Eastern.

America's Day at the Races will present live coverage and analysis of every day of Belmont at the Big A on the networks of FOX Sports. For the broadcast schedule and channel finder, visit https://www.nyra.com/aqueduct/racing/tv-schedule.

Progeny Of Teofilo Popular At Tattersalls Online

A pair of sons by Teofilo (Ire) filled the top two places during Thursday's Tattersalls Online September Sale.

Topping the sale was the 3-year-old colt Teorie (Ire) (lot 24) who was knocked down for 45,000gns to Fergal O'Brien Racing and his stable jockey Paddy Brennan. Already a winner from five starts, the colt is a full-brother to the winning Theodulus (Ire) and is from the extended family of G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud winner Gear Up (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}). He was consigned by Jim Bolger's Glebe House Stables.

“We bought a lovely horse last year from Mr. Bolger called Dancila by the same sire and this horse had a good profile, I loved his win at Leopardstown,” said O'Brien. “We have an owner who wants a juvenile hurdler so we thought we'd give it a go. He'll go back to Paddy Brennan's, and we'll probably have him castrated, then we'll start jumping him to go for juvenile hurdles.”

Scott Lowther paid 30,000gns for the 3-year-old gelding That's Jet (Ire), who was offered by O'Sullivan Bloodstock. Lot 25 has placed once over hurdles, and his dam, Floating Along (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}), is a half-sister to G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest winner King's Apostle (Ire) (King's Best) and G2 Lartigue Hurdle scorer Politicise (Ire) (Camelot {GB}).

“My trainer Daragh Bourke had watched a few of his races in Ireland and he'd come recommended from a couple of guys over there too. I'll look for a juvenile hurdle for him–we'll maybe aim him for Wetherby in October although he looks very well handicapped on the Flat as well I must admit.”

The progeny of Blue Point (Ire) have been in demand in the sales ring with his 35 first-crop winners anchored by four stakes winner, among them Big Evs (Ire), who will race in the G2 Carlsberg Danish Pilsner Flying Childers S. on Friday. Lot 8, the filly Raknah (Ire), was bought by BBA Ireland for 25,000gns from Andrew Balding's Park House Stables. She has placed once in three runs, and is out of a full-sister to G3 Ballyroan S. hero Stellar Mass (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}).

The second Blue Point to sell was 15,000gns buy Desert Master (GB) (lot 35), who has hit the board five times in eight runs to date. From James Tate's Jamesfield Stables, the bay is out of the listed-placed Iffraaj (GB) mare Al Fareej (Ire) and caught the eye of Northgate Lodge Stud.

De Bruyne (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}) (lot 34) was snapped up for 25,000gns to Gassim Ghazali from Ed Walker Racing. The gelding sports a win on the all-weather and is a grandson of Listed Sandy Lane S. winner Danehill Destiny (GB) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), who was also third twice at Group 3 level.

From a catalogue of 91, 81 horses were offered with 47 sold (58%) for a gross of 377,700gns. The average was 8,036gns and the median was 4,000gns.
