Into Mischief’s Gamine Dominates Acorn

GAMINE (f, 3, Into Mischief-Peggy Jane, by Kafwain) ran them off their feet from start to finish, demolishing the GI Acorn S. by 15 lengths. Going straight to the front from her rail draw, the 3-5 chalk appeared out for a morning gallop as she clocked an opening quarter in :22.48. Gamine Shaves Over A Second Off Stakes Record, Smashes Competition In Acorn

A $1.8 million 2-year-old purchase, Michael Lund Peterson's Gamine made her graded stakes debut an impressive one in Saturday's Grade 1 Acorn at Belmont Park. The 3-year-old Into Mischief filly ran her opposition off their feet to win by over 15 lengths, delivering for trainer Bob Baffert and jockey John Velazquez as the 1-2 favorite.

Gamine's final time for the one-mile trip over a fast main track was a sparkling 1:32.55, shaving more than a second off the previous stakes record of 1:33.58, set last year by Guarana.

Breaking from the inside gate in the field of seven, Gamine went straight to the lead under Velazquez. She began to separate herself from the field after a first quarter in 22.48 seconds, pulling away by a length and a half to mark the half-mile in :45.28. Water White and Lucrezia attempted to go with her around the turn, but nearing the head of the lane Gamine had a three-length lead.

All alone after six furlongs in 1:09.33, Gamine continued to pull at the bridle and increase the distance between herself and her rivals down the stretch. By the wire, she was about 15 lengths ahead of Pleasant Orb in second, while Water White finished third. Lucrezia faded to fourth.

Bred in Kentucky by Grace Thoroughbred Holdings LLC, Gamine is out of the stakes-placed Kafwain mare Peggy Jane. With one winner from the mare's first two foals, Gamine sold for $220,000 at the Keeneland September yearling sale. Bobby Dodd prepared the filly for the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-year-old in training sale, when her :10 flat breeze and impressive physical commanded a final bid of $1.8 million.

The filly easily broke her maiden at first asking at Santa Anita, winning by 6 1/4 lengths, before showing her determination in her second start to win an allowance race at Oaklawn Park. In that 1 1/16-mile contest, Gamine set the pace and dug in to defeat the well-regarded Speech (next-out second in the Santa Anita Oaks) by a neck on the wire.

Now undefeated through three career starts, Gamine boasts earnings of nearly $250,000.

Observations: Ballydoyle Bluebloods out in Force at Leopardstown

2.10 Leopardstown, Mdn, €16,500, 2yo, f, 7fT
SWEET MOLLY MALONE (American Pharoah) is one of two regally-bred fillies from Ballydoyle and the pick of Seamie Heffernan, which is probably the best guide as to what is expected. The half-sister to the stable’s G1 Irish Oaks heroine Bracelet (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) and her Grade I-winning close relative Athena (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) is joined by Divinely (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), a full-sister to TDN Rising Star Found (Ire) who is partnered by Wayne Lordan while Donnacha saddles Shale (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}, a daughter of the G1 1,000 Guineas heroine Homecoming Queen (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}).

SOUTHERN CAPE (IRE) (Galileo {Ire}) is another Ballydoyle newcomer to catch the eye as a son of the G1 Cheveley Park S. heroine Tiggy Wiggy (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), making him a full-brother to the talented but ill-fated Year of the Tiger (Ire). Taking him on is Newtown Anner Stud Farm’s Ger Lyons-trained homebred Ides of August (More Than Ready),a full-brother to the G3 City of York S. winner Nemoralia who was placed in group and grade one company on three occasions.

Becerra Hoping To Score Big With Touchdown Brown After Sharp Debut Win

Veteran trainer Rafael Becerra was all smiles Saturday morning, as his talented California-bred juvenile Touchdown Brown ran lights-out in his debut in Friday's fourth race, demolishing seven Cal-bred rivals by 5 ¼ lengths while getting 4 ½ furlongs in 52.81 at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif.

“He's really good this morning, he pulled up great,” said the popular Becerra, 65.  “The owners told me they're already getting a lot offers, but the good news is, they're not selling.  I got this horse in mid-March and from day one, he acted like a good horse.  We went to the track with him right away and he galloped perfect and he's got a very good mind.

“You could see he's got a nice way of moving and my exercise rider really liked him right from the start.  When we started breezing him, he did everything easy and outworked a good horse of mine in company.”

A homebred colt by Cairo Prince out of the Cherokee Run mare Chicalelee, Touchdown Brown, who is owned by Edward J. Brown, Jr., Alan Klein and Phillip Lebherz, was off as the 3-2 favorite and paid $5.00 to win.

Breaking alertly from post position seven, Touchdown Brown, who was ridden by Evin Roman, was on the move while third, about 1 ½ lengths off the lead approaching the quarter pole.  From there, he entered the stretch three-deep and when he switched to his left lead, forged to the front approaching the sixteenth pole winning under a hand ride in a tremendous effort.

Becerra, who started on the racetrack at age 16 in 1971 with the legendary Farrell Jones and his Hall of Fame son, Gary, has been training on his own since Gary Jones' retirement in 1996 and has long been regarded as a hard working, no-nonsense horseman who helped develop multiple graded stakes winner Kingdom Found, a California-bred gelding, foaled in 1990, who banked $810,863 in a career that spanned seven racing seasons.

What's next for Touchdown Brown?

“With all the money that's available, the owners agree that we're going to stay with Cal-breds for now,” said Becerra.  “We're going to run him in the Graduation Stakes (5 ½ furlongs, Aug. 2 at Del Mar) and we'll see where we go from there.”

If yesterday's result was any indication, Touchdown Brown figures to go a long, long way indeed.
