COVID-19: Turf Paradise Reschedules Opening Day To After Thanksgiving

Turf Paradise in Phoenix, Ariz. has rescheduled its opening day to the day after Thanksgiving, Friday November 27. Originally, the 133-day live meet had been scheduled to run from October 17-May 1, 2021. The new schedule will run from Nov. 27-May 1, for 110 live race days.

“We are hoping that by opening later the Coronavirus situation will settle down in Arizona,” said track general manager Vincent Francia. “Regardless we will have health protocols in place when the meet opens.”

Francia added, “We are working with AZHBPA president Bob Hutton as to a date when the horses can begin to arrive in the stable area.”

Hurling For Cancer Research Goes Virtual in 2020

The 2020 Hurling for Cancer Research, the annual charity hurling match between a host of racing, GAA, sports starts and TV personalities, is going virtual for 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Horse Racing Ireland announced on Monday. Jim Bolger’s and Davy Russell’s teams will not line-out in St Conleth’s Park on Tuesday, Aug. 11, but a large cadre of celebrities will be on hand via the internet. The participants are: Frankie Dettori, Davy Russell, Lee Chin, Richie Hogan, Ursula Jacob, Marty Morrissey, Ruby Walsh, AP McCoy, Miriam O’Callaghan, Ger Lyons, Shane Foley, Willie Mullins, Danny Mullins, Paul McGrath, Ashling Thompson, Tommy Walsh and Cian Boland. Those in the challenge are asked to donate the £10 ticket price to the Irish Cancer Society. Donations are accepted through www.justgiving.com/hurlingforcancer, while fans are invited to share your hurling skill on Instagram or Twitter. BHA Announces Fixture Tweaks

There have been several changes made to upcoming races in the UK and the overall race programme, the British Horseracing Authority announced on Monday. The September to December Fixture List is still under discussion with more updates expected later in the week. As of now, the changes are:

Beginning in August, field sizes for Jump races can revert to the maximum limit imposed by the racecourse.
Chester’s Aug. 9 fixture will move to Aug. 10
Windsor’s Aug. 10 fixture will move to Aug. 9
Chester’s Aug. 14 fixture is unchanged
Salisbury has added a race to its Aug. 9 card
Redcar’s £100,000 Two Year Old Trophy has been confirmed, with entries closing on July 28.
Finally, foreign-trained runners are only permitted in Class 1 races and Heritage Handicaps, but this ruling will be reviewed in early September.

Beholder’s Yearling Filly Gets A Name: Karin With An I

The second foal out of four-time Eclipse Award winner Beholder, a filly by Curlin, has been given the name Karin With An I, owner Spendthrift Farm announced on Monday.

The name was chosen in honor of the later mother of Spendthrift president Eric Gustavson.

”My mom died the same year the filly was born,” Gustavson said. “Wayne (Hughes) so graciously suggested we name the filly after my mom. I tried her name, which is Karin, with the Jockey Club. There was already a Caren (Canada's 2016 Horse of the Year), so they rejected it. That's how I chose 'Karin With An I.”'

The name follows in the footsteps of Beholder's first foal, an Uncle Mo colt named Q B One who is training toward his debut start in Southern California. Beholder delivered her third foal, a War Front filly, on Jan. 12 at Spendthrift Farm, where the 10-year-old Henny Hughes mare resides, and she visited fellow Spendthrift resident Bolt d'Oro during the 2020 breeding season.

Curlin, a 16-year-old son of Smart Strike, stands at Hill 'n' Dale Farms in Lexington, Ky., for an advertised fee of $175,000. The two-time Horse of the Year is the sire of Breeders' Cup Classic winner Vino Rosso, Preakness Stakes winner Exaggerator, and Belmont Stakes winner Palace Malice, among many others.
