Deauville: Can Art Power Prevail In The Maurice De Gheest?

Always talented but frustratingly for King Power Racing just below what is required at the top level in his native England, Art Power (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) has made successful overseas raids his main business and the travel-hungry sprinter is a notable first-timer at Deauville on Sunday for the G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest. Five trips to Ireland have resulted in a 100% win record, with The Curragh's G2 Greenlands S. and G2 Sapphire S. among this year's tally so it will be fascinating to see if his debut outing in France yields the same return.

King Power's racing manager Alastair Donald said of the Tim Easterby-trained 6-year-old, “He's got his favoured ground and he's thriving at the moment. He seems to love travelling and in French conditions we feel six and a half furlongs shouldn't be a problem–he actually ran pretty well last year over seven at York. The style of racing in France should really suit us, as he might be able to dominate and this is possibly his best chance ever to win a Group 1.”

If Art Power's love of overseas travel is confined to Ireland, there are a few among the 70% British representation that could take advantage. They include the Karl Burke-trained G3 Pavilion S. winner Cold Case (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) and G3 Prix de Ris-Orangis scorer Spycatcher (Ire) (Vadamos {Fr}). The latter was impressive in that six-furlong contest here last month and Highclere Thoroughbred Racing's managing director Harry Herbert hopes they have spotted an opportunity with this being one of the weakest renewals in years.

“It's a rather unique race obviously, in that it's run over six and a half furlongs and that would be his ideal trip,” he said. “He's been such a fun horse, he was so impressive last time and having thought he might be retired last year with a little issue he had, he now seems to be better than ever. The turnaround has been incredible for his shareholders, he's been very well trained by Karl and it's amazing to be heading over to Deauville for a group one.”

A Wide-Open German Oaks

Also on Sunday, Dusseldorf stage the 165th running of the G1 Henkel-Preis der Diana with no obvious standout among the 14 protagonists. As ever, the draw will play a part with only two winners having come from double-figure stalls in the last 10 renewals. Gestut Rottgen's impressive G3 Hoppegarten Diana Trial winner Kassada (Ger) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) who was subsequently second in the G3 Hamburger Stutenpreis at Hamburg last month is drawn against the fence, while Stall Golden Goal's G3 Hamburg Stuten-Meile scorer Muskoka (Ger) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) is in four as she steps up markedly in trip. Gestut Ebbesloh's G1 Deutsches Derby third Weracruz (Ger) (Cracksman {GB}) has the major disadvantage of being in stall 13, while the French raider, the G3 Prix Vanteaux runner-up Sea The Lady (Fr) (Sea The Moon {Ger}), is in 11. Sunday's other key contest is the G3 Prix Daphnis back at Deauville, where Juddmonte's unbeaten Andre Fabre-trained colt Colombier (GB) (Kingman {GB}) reappears after a break having beaten his re-opposing subsequent Listed Prix de Saint-Patrick-winning stablemate Mr Moliere (GB) (Kingman {GB}) in a ParisLongchamp conditions event in May.

Kentucky Derby Winner Mage Breezes for Travers

OGMA Investments, Ramiro Restrepo, Sterling Racing and CMNWLTH's GI Kentucky Derby winner Mage (Good Magic) breezed five furlongs in 1:01.03 (5/9) at Saratoga Saturday in preparation for the GI Travers S. Aug. 26.

NYRA Clockers caught the Gustavo Delgado trainee through splits of :12.58, :24.49 and :36.35 over the main track.

“Very good, because it was very easy,” Delgado said of the work, which was Mage's first breeze since finishing second in the GI TVG.com Haskell S. July 22. “The rider said to me, 'no complaints.' Very intelligent and concentrated. He came back and wasn't breathing heavy and was quite focused. We can't ask for more. We wanted whatever the horse wanted to do. It's two weeks after the Haskell, so we had no expectations and he didn't need to hit a mark.”

Restrepo added, “I'm super happy. He galloped out strong and he's really feeling himself. He's really enjoying Saratoga and a lot of horses take to it here. It's like a horse paradise for them and for ourselves. We go week-by-week in this process.”

Louisville Owner Clinton Glasscock Passes At Age 52, Was Starlight Partner In Justify, Authentic

Clinton L. Glasscock, who as a Starlight Racing partner reached the pinnacle of U.S. racing with 2018 Triple Crown winner Justify, passed away peacefully in his sleep Thursday morning in Louisville. He was 52.

Glasscock had a lifelong passion for sports and competition. Horse racing evolved to be his favorite – as he developed many great friendships while competing at the highest levels of the sport. In 2010, he became a partner in Starlight Racing and that led to several once in a lifetime experiences, including Justify's Triple Crown campaign and then, in 2020, Authentic's victory in the Kentucky Derby (G1) and Breeder's Cup Classic (G1). He also served as founder of Two Dimes Stables and was a co-managing partner of Northstar Racing.

Prior to Justify's victory in the Preakness (G1), the second jewel in the Triple Crown, Glasscock recalled the surreal experience of watching the colt in the Kentucky Derby (G1), the first jewel, from Churchill Downs' turf course.

“It's almost like they're singing 'My Old Kentucky Home' at you before the race, which gave you chills,” said Glasscock, a Louisville native. He and  Starlight Racing founder Jack Wolf and several other Louisvillians in the Starlight's Justify partnership became the first Louisville natives to capture the Derby since Hamilton Applegate won the 1914 edition with Old Rosebud.

Following the Derby and Preakness, the Scat Daddy colt went on to secure the Triple Crown in the Belmont Stakes (G1) and eventually Horse of the Year honors for Starlight Racing, China Horse Club, Head of Plains Partners LLC, and WinStar Farm.

Glasscock's was also involved in a Starlight Racing partnership on Authentic, the 2020 Horse of the Year, who also was co-owned by Spendthrift Farm LLC, My Racehorse Stable, and Madaket Stables LLC.

Glasscock was the son of C. Edward Glasscock and Mary F. Glasscock and the brother of Mary Jane Kirkpatrick (David) and an uncle to Mary Elizabeth and Sarah Kirkpatrick. He is survived by his fiancée Jennifer Mutwalli and her sons Zade and Kasey.

He was a graduate of St. Xavier High School (1989), as was Jack Wolf (1967), in Louisville and was a standout tennis player. He and his doubles partner Chris Bohnert represented St. X in the state championships in 1988 and 1989.

Clinton attended Furman University (1993), where he was a four-year member of the tennis team – highlighted by a regional championship in 1992. He was a member of the TKE Fraternity.

After college, Glasscock returned to his hometown of Louisville and began to build a successful career as an insurance executive. He and his cousin Jimmy Dan Conner and Danny McMahan bought the Old Colony Insurance Agency in 2000. This company thrived and was sold to BB&T in 2010. In 2020, BB&T sold the insurance portion of the business to the McGriff Insurance Agency, where Glasscock continued his career.

Glasscock was very active in the Louisville community, including serving on the boards of Maryhurst Big Springs, Junior Achievement Board, the Kentucky Derby Museum, and Bellarmine Board of Overseers. He was a longtime member of the Young Presidents Organization and a member of Second Presbyterian Church.

Most recently, his love for St. X, the game of tennis and the spirit of competition were brought together as he served as Assistant Tennis Coach for the St. X tennis team. The players immediately gravitated to 'Coach Clint' and, in addition to coaching, he implemented 'Tiger Talk Tuesdays', where he brought back leaders from St. X's past to share wisdom with the team.

Services will be arranged by Pearson's Funeral Home and the burial will be held at 10:00 am. A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, August 8, 2023 at Second Presbyterian Church, 3701 Old Brownsboro Road, Louisville, KY 40207. There will be a Celebration of Life held at Harmony Landing Country Club immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to: The Clinton Glasscock Tennis Scholarship Fund, St. Xavier High School, 1609 Poplar Level Road, Louisville, KY 40217 or the Bellarmine Basketball Knight Club, Knights Hall, 2001 Newburg Road, Louisville, KY 40205.

Services will be arranged by Pearson's Funeral Home and the burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. (ET) A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 8, 2023 at Second Presbyterian Church, 3701 Old Brownsboro Road, Louisville, KY 40207.
