Jose Ortiz ‘Sore, But Good’ After Saratoga Spill; Targeting Wednesday Return To Saddle

Jockey Jose Ortiz was diagnosed with bruised ribs after a spill at Saratoga on Friday, July 21, according to bloodhorse.com. Winner of the leading rider title at Belmont Park's most recent meet, Ortiz was involved in a spill near the finish of the first race when he was unseated from Wesley Ward trainee Same Old Fears.

The rider was transported to Albany Medical Center for evaluation. Ward later reported that Same Old Fears was not injured in the incident.

Ortiz was on the Saratoga backstretch Sunday, breezing a horse for trainer Jonathan Thomas, and plans to be back in the saddle in the afternoon by Wednesday's card.

“I feel OK. Sore, but good,” Ortiz told bloodhorse.com. “I am just taking it day by day. It feels a little better every day, but I am still very sore.”

Daddy’s Lil Darling Daughter Savethelastdance Gets Up Just In Time To Win Group 1 Irish Oaks

Savethelastdance delivered on her favorite tag with Group 1 Irish Oaks glory at The Curragh Saturday as trainer Aidan O'Brien made yet more history.

O'Brien's charge came into the race as 10-11 favorite but she was made to work hard for the win, coming from four lengths back with only three furlongs to go before taking it at the finish line.

It was another fantastic ride from O'Brien's trusty in-race general Ryan Moore, never panicking, even when it appeared it may be too much to do, with the odds rising to 999-1 during the running.

He was able to guide Savethelastdance onto the left-hand side, first overtaking Joseph O'Brien's Lumiere Rock, then stablemate Library, before just having enough in the tank to see off Bluestocking.

Savethelastdance is the first foal out of American-trained Grade 1-winning millionaire Daddy's Lil Darling. The Galileo filly won the listed Cheshire Oaks in impressive fashion before her second-place finish in the Group 1 Epsom Oaks.

The win took O'Brien to his seventh Irish Oaks triumph, putting him outright as the leading trainer in the race, ahead of Sir Michael Stoute, in a year in which he cannot seem to do any wrong. His ninth Epsom Derby win saw him extend his lead there, while another stellar Royal Ascot week again saw him overtaking Stoute as the all-time leading trainer in that famed week.

Now he leads Irish Oaks victories, with Savethelastdance following in the well-trodden footsteps of Alexandrova (2006), Peeping Fawn (2007), Moonstone (2008), Bracelet (2014), Seventh Heaven (2016) and Snowfall two years ago.

Under the revised schedule, 2% of the total purse will be allocated to the sixth-place finisher.

Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance, on-site in Saratoga for a variety of events in August, highlighted by the Aug. 5 GI Whitney S., will be available at NYRA's Community Outreach Booth to share information on accredited aftercare. Branded merchandise will be available in exchange for a donation, including a limited-edition Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance “Saratoga” t-shirt sponsored by Repole Stable featuring a unique design by artist and supporter Ellen Skidmore.

The TAA will remain on-site through the Aug. 7-8 Fasig-Tipton yearling sales. For more information, visit www.nyra.com/saratoga/visit/community-booth.

“With so many events and industry participants in town for the Saratoga meet, it is a fantastic opportunity for Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance to be on-site and connect with supporters, partners, and some of our local accredited organizations,” said Jeffrey Bloom, TAA President. “We look forward to continuing to share the mission of accredited aftercare with racing fans and we value all of our partnerships and supporters that give us the platform to do so during this premiere meet.”

The TAA will have two named races on consecutive days to highlight accredited aftercare–Saturday, Aug. 5 and Sunday, Aug. 6. Following the running of each race, a presentation will be made to the winning connections including a branded blanket and swag bag.

In addition, TAA will be honored with a donation of $25,000 from James and Shari Ough. The check presentation will be made during the running of the named race Aug. 5.

TAA will also facilitate guests on Whitney day from one of the VIP experiences auctioned off earlier this year in the “Off to the Races” campaign, promoting aftercare awareness. Winners from the VIP experience will enjoy a special track tour, a tour of the Saratoga Racing Museum and Hall of Fame, and a day of racing with paddock passes and winner's circle access during the TAA race. The experience was donated by NYRA and the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame.
