Rispoli Brings International Experience To Del Mar Jockey Colony

Jockey Umberto Rispoli loves riding at Del Mar. And it shows.

Since arriving at the seaside oval in the summer of 2020, he has never finished out of the top five in the jockey standings. Twice he's finish second, including a meet-long battle with Flavien Prat in 2020 that Rispoli lost on the final day, 50-to-49. He was a distant runner-up to Juan Hernandez last summer.

Those close calls haven't dampened his enthusiasm, and so far he leads the jockey standings at Del Mar's summer meet with seven victories going into Saturday's card. In fact, he looks back with pride on the riding dual with Prat in 2020.

“It was one of the finest battles they've ever seen here,” Rispoli said. “I didn't expect that at that time because it was my first meet and I didn't know what was expected of me, but to finish the meet with 49 winners was pretty good.”

At Santa Anita the winter/spring before arriving at Del Mar, Rispoli won 50 races so his career in the U.S got off to a rousing start. But then again the native of Italy came to America with some impressive credentials. He holds the record in Italy for most wins in a season and boasts several riding titles.

“The good target at Del Mar is to find a good horse that's going to the Breeders' Cup,” he said, “and to have a solid meeting. Keep the bar for winning high. That's the key.

“I'm trying to win as many good races as I can,” Rispoli continued. “If the title is an option, we can try to win the title but the priority is to find some nice 2-year-olds, win some big races and prepare for the road to the Breeders' Cup.”

Rispoli has ridden in one Breeders' Cup during his brief career in the U.S. He finished second on Smooth Like Strait in the 2021 Breeders' Cup Turf (G1) at Del Mar.

In April of last year, business was waning up at Santa Anita so Rispoli decided to move his tack east. At first he was going to New York, but he called an audible and went to Kentucky instead. There he found even fewer opportunities. He had difficulty finding quality rides and after only a couple of months he decided to return to Southern California where his wife and two children had remained.

“It was tough for me when I came back from Kentucky,” Rispoli said. “I lost a lot of business and you know, once you're gone you have to rebuild everything again. But Matt has been doing a great job and now we're riding for a lot of people.”

Matt Nakatani is Rispoli's agent and over a year later Rispoli said business is good and he's setting his sights on closing the gap between him and his chief rival, Juan Hernandez, who he admires and respects as a fellow rider.

“Juan has done a terrific job to keep winning,“ Rispoli said. “But I would like to give him a challenge. Otherwise it's going to be boring. I think I can be a tough customer for him.”

As for the rest of the jockey colony, Rispoli, who has ridden everywhere, from France to the Czech Republic, from Japan to South Africa, said the Del Mar jockey colony is on the improve.

“The colony is getting tough and stronger,” Rispoli said. “At the end of the day you need to ride a good horse, that's what you need. You can be a good rider but if they put you on a 100-1 horse or 50-1, at the end of the day you're not going to win any races.

“I think the competition is open with everybody,” he continued. “We just need to be focused. It's a short meet, intense, and the less mistakes you make the more races you can win.”

Elite Power Noses Out Gunite In Vanderbilt, Keeps Win Streak Going

Now, that's how you celebrate a birthday.

Champion sprinter Elite Power (Curlin) came charging down the sealed, sloppy stretch at Saratoga to nail Gunite (Gun Runner) by a head in Saturday's GI Alfred G. Vanderbilt H. on Hall of Famer Bill Mott's 70th birthday.

Racing over a wet surface for the first time, the even-money favorite was sixth though an opening quarter in :22.64. He was tipped out by Irad Ortiz, Jr. approaching the quarter pole and set his sights on the aforementioned slight second choice, who enjoyed first run and was beginning to get away. Elite Power was just getting started, however, and kept on motoring home to get there in dramatic fashion to win his eighth straight.

“It looked like Gunite certainly had the jump on him turning for home,” Mott said. “Great, great, great effort on this horse. He's a big, strong horse, heavy horse. He handled (the off track) well, but it doesn't have to be his best surface and I think it's great. There was that question beforehand. You just don't know. It's like trying a new distance for the first time. When you try a new track surface, you just don't know what's going to happen. But class came through.”

Elite Power's winning streak also includes last term's GI Breeders' Cup Sprint at Keeneland Nov. 5, the G3 Riyadh Dirt Sprint in Saudi Arabia Feb. 25 and the GII True North S. at Belmont Park June 10.

“For him to put up a streak like this against top competition just really boils down to him being a really good horse,” Mott said. They don't do it by accident.”

Mott added that Elite Power would likely target the GI Forego S. at Saratoga Aug. 26.

Pedigree Notes:

Elite Power, a $900,000 KEESEP yearling purchase by Juddmonte, is one of 54 graded winners, 20 at the Grade I level, for the mighty Curlin.

Broodmare sire Vindication, the unbeaten winner of the 2002 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Arlington, is responsible for 12 graded winners, six at the top level.

Elite Power is bred on the same Curlin/Vindication cross as GI Preakness S. winner Exaggerator. Elite Power's dam Broadway's Alibi, a MGSW & GI Kentucky Oaks runner-up and Robsham homebred, brought $2.15 million from Alpha Delta Stables while in foal to Smart Strike at the 2013 KEENOV sale. Broadway's Alibi is also represented by a Curlin colt of 2021.

Elite Power's fourth dam is champion 2-year-old filly and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies heroine Eliza (Mt. Livermore). This is also the family of GISW and young sire Dialed In (Mineshaft).

“(The late) Prince Khalid was the one that wanted to win the Kentucky Derby,” Juddmonte's Garrett O'Rourke said. “We bought this guy by Curlin out of a mare that was second in the Kentucky Oaks. That was our dream. But this is a very, very good consolation prize. That was Prince Khalid's idea and dream at the time, but now we've moved on to his sons who are taking a tremendous interest and they're the ones carrying this forward. I'm thanking them for the point of view of Juddmonte and I think it's great for the whole legacy of Juddmonte that they're carrying it through.”

Be Better Proves Best In Deputed Testamony; Beguine Takes Alma North At Laurel

Repole Stable's Be Better, a homebred son of champion Uncle Mo, extended his win streak to three races by passing multiple stakes winners Nimitz Class and Ournationonparade in deep stretch and going on to a 1¼-length triumph in Saturday's $100,000 Deputed Testamony at Laurel Park.

The 27th running of the 1 1/8-mile Deputed Testamony for 3-year-olds and up and the seventh renewal of the $100,000 Alma North for fillies and mares going 6½ furlongs were among five stakes worth $500,000 in purses headlined by the $150,000 Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash for older sprinters.

Ridden by Sheldon Russell for his wife, Maryland's leading trainer Brittany Russell, Be Better ($7.80) picked up his first stakes win in his fifth start since being sent to the Mid-Atlantic after going 2-for-7 primarily in New York for Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher.

“He showed up in great shape. I didn't have a whole lot to do,” Brittany Russell said. “Really we just kind of got him happy. He seems to really like Maryland. We found a couple spots for him that seemed to pick his head up and that seemed to give him some confidence.”

Be Better ran second and third in his first two tries for Russell in the spring at Laurel, both at a mile, before breaking through with a 3¾-length optional claiming allowance victory May 20 on the undercard of the 148th Preakness Stakes (G1)) at Pimlico Race Course.

In his prior start, Be Better again came from off the pace to notch a 5¼-length third-level allowance score June 17 at Laurel, his second straight going 1 1/16 miles. The Deputed Testamony was his fourth overall win and first in four tries at 1 1/8 miles.

“We've had this race on our radar for some time, since he won the three-other-than. We had some some options to run in New York and Delaware, but we opted to just point to this race and give him some time and it seemed to work out,” Russell said. “When you see the overnight come out and you see the horses in the race, it was a tough spot. But, as good as he's been doing and stepping forward I felt like he was up to the task.”

Ournationonparade, one of two horses in the Deputed Testamony for red-hot trainer Jamie Ness, outran his rivals to the front and led through an easy opening quarter-mile of 25.59 seconds. Nimitz Class, the 1-9 favorite who had a five-race win streak – including four consecutive Laurel stakes – snapped last time out, settled in second followed by 14-time career winner Yodel E.A. Who and Be Better.

Sheldon Russell remained unhurried on Be Better as the half went in :49.84 without a change in running order, though Nimitz Class began to close the gap on the leader. They reached the top of the stretch together and Nimitz Class was able to ease by Ournationparade passing the eighth pole, but Be Better was only starting to roll on the far outside and surged past them both, finishing up in 1:49.68 over a fast main track.

“It's great,” Brittany Russell said. “Just watching Sheldon's body language as he was riding him, I just felt like he had horse and I felt like when he tipped him out he was going make a run. It was just a matter of if he was going to get there.”

Nimitz Class stayed up for second, a half-length ahead of Ournationonparade, with stablemate Yodel E.A. Who seven lengths back in fourth.

“I'm delighted. I'm so excited. I have to thank Mike Repole and his team. They've been super supportive in sending us a horse like this,” Russell said. “It's huge. I'm very thankful for these guys. Winning races like this today, it's a lot of fun.”

Beguine Goes The Distance In Alma North

Beguine, a 4-year-old homebred daughter of Gun Runner owned by Charles Matses and trained by Edward Allard, led gate-to-wire to win the $100,000 Alma North, covering 6½ furlongs in 1:15.83.

Out of the five-time winning mare Shananies Song, Beguine, second by a neck last year in the Fantasy (G3), has won two of her three starts this year. The Alma North turned out to be pretty straight forward for Beguine and jockey Jevian Toledo, who went to the front, clicked off fractions of :22.70 and :45.52, and drove home 2 3/4 lengths in front of Response Time. Dreamster checked in third.

Only five went to post in the Alma North after Street Lute, Prince Kokachin, Sweet Gracie, and Moody Woman scratched.

Also on Saturday's card, Steven Walfish's Super Accelerate, stepping up to stakes company for the first time, got a patient trip from jockey Horacio Karamanos and dug in late to fend off a pair of challengers for a half-length victory in the $75,000 Star de Naskra. By Accelerate, Super Accelerate ($6.60) ran his win streak to three races for trainer Robin Graham.

Midwest shipper Easy Action, without a start since April 14 and racing as a new gelding, was sharp from the gate and went the opening quarter-mile in :23.45  as Super Accelerate saved ground inside and multiple stakes winner Coffeewithchris in the clear three wide.

Coffeewithchris ranged up alongside Super Accelerate rounding the far turn and was set down for a drive with Easy Action making his bid on the rail, but neither horse was able to get by a determined Super Accelerate, who crossed the wire in 1:22.54 over a fast main track. Easy Action edged Coffeewithchris by a neck for second.

Waldorf Racing Stables' Talk to the Judge, stretched out an extra furlong and a half and returned to the dirt following a failed turf attempt two weeks earlier, led from start to finish to register a 13-1 upset in the $75,000 Miss Disco.

Trained by Marya Montoya, Talk to the Judge ($28.40) gave jockey Victor Carrasco his second straight Miss Disco victory following Divine Huntress last year.

Carrasco was able to settle Talk to the Judge on the lead through fractions of :23.02 and :45.37 with 2022 Maryland Juvenile Fillies runner-up Fast Tracked and 30-1 long shot Willful Desire giving closest chase. Liquidator, coming back eight days off a 5½-furlong victory at Laurel, was next while favored Malibu Moonshine ran last of eight.

Talk to the Judge, a 4-year-old Maryland-bred Golden Lad filly, remained in command at the top of the stretch with Liquidator to her outside looming as the main competitor. Under Carrasco's urging, Talk to the Judge was able to withstand a steady bid from Liquidator to win by a head in 1:23.81. It was two lengths back to late-running 12-1 long shot Rowsie Express in third.

Occult Dominates Rivals in Monmouth Oaks

It was a Halloween exacta come early as Occult (Into Mischief) dominated the GIII Monmouth Oaks over a determined Foggy Night (Khozan), giving jockey Feargal Lynch the black-type double in New Jersey.

Steadied last out in the GI Acorn at Big Sandy, but recovering well enough to finish third, the 7-5 favorite had already tasted success early this year in New York as the Busanda S. victress at Aqueduct before running fifth in the GIII Gazelle behind Promiseher America (American Pharoah).

Racing four wide after the jump and settling well in that spot off the rail, she was content to watch the contest unfold from seventh as the leading flight debated the pace. Advancing on the backside and five wide into the far bend, Occult caught the eye as she effortlessly circled the field to take charge at the top of the lane. Widening with every stride, she drew off from her rivals and left them 10 1/4 lengths in her wake as Foggy Night and Riding Pretty closed out the trifecta.

“She's a very big filly who needs time to find her stride and get into a nice rhythm. She'll keep going all day once she gets into her stride, so stamina was never an issue with her. I saw there was some cheap speed in here, so I let them go,” said the winning rider. “At the half-mile pole, I was just trying to find a way clear. Because she's such a big striding filly, you think you're going nowhere. But when I watch the replay, I am sure I will be impressed with the way she was moving. It's all about rhythm and momentum with a big horse like that.”

When asked if he'd been given any specific instructions to adhere to, Lynch replied: “Chad Brown never really ties you down with any instructions. He's great to ride for that way. We have a lot of faith in each other. He just said `get a good trip and win.'”

A half-sister to a pair of accomplished Tapits in Exulting and Magical, the latter with her own 2-year-old daughter by Into Mischief named Illusion, Occult is the most recent black-type runner for their dam and the 65th winner at the graded level for her sire. She has a 2-year-old full-brother Imagination and a 2023 half-brother already named Make My Day (Gun Runner).
