‘Not Afraid Of Doing Different Things’: Mark Johnston First Trainer To Reach 5,000 Winners In Great Britain

Mark Johnston has become the first person to train 5,000 winners in Great Britain after Dubai Mile claimed victory at Kempton racecourse (5.30pm) Wednesday afternoon.

Johnston, 62, broke Richard Hannon Sr.'s record for number of winners trained in Great Britain in August 2018 and he has now become the first trainer to reach the milestone of 5,000 winners four years later.

Johnston began sharing his trainer's license with his son Charlie, 31, earlier this year. Together they have registered 126 winners, with Johnston achieving 4,874 winners by himself up until this year, meaning Mark has trained the grand total of 5,000 winners in his career. The landmark consists of 4,995 winners on the Flat and five over Jumps.

On the achievement, Johnston said: “It's obviously a bit different from breaking the record in 2018, you could say no-one has reached 4,194 winners (the previous record) so it's not as if I'm breaking new ground, it's just another landmark and setting the bar higher for people to try to reach.

“The main thing is the whole business revolves around winners and a lot of winners means a lot of happy owners. Hopefully we can continue doing the same thing.”

Johnston began training in 1987 and his first winner came with Hinari Video at Carlisle racecourse in July that year.

Since then, he has had more than 200 winners in a year on 10 occasions, including in 2019 when he won the most prize money of his career with £5,399,691 and had the most winners in a single year.

Johnston has had 14 British Group 1 wins throughout his career, the latest with Subjectivist in last year's Gold Cup at Royal Ascot, and the trainer said of his superstar stayer: “I think I said at the time I'd put Subjectivist in the top three racehorses that I have ever trained and I'd stand by that.

“That was based on the fact that when I made that statement he'd won the Ascot Gold Cup, he was basically the best horse in the world over two miles and above and in taking him to the races at that point, I didn't fear anything other than Subjectivist not being at his best. I felt if he was at his best, he would win. I've only ever had that attitude with two other horses before, who were Shamardal and Attraction.”

ITV Racing's Brough Scott said of Johnston reaching 5,000 winners: “He has an unbelievable energy, combined with original thinking and he's changed the way people look at things. He came in starting from zero but brought a fresh mindset, real determination and a proper grounding.

“He's done extraordinary things and it's very much a partnership with Charlie, they are a talented family. A lot of things happen in racing because things have always happened that way, but they are not prepared to just accept things.

“Mark will argue for how he thinks things should be done, starting up he didn't copy other people, he created his own system and he's kept rebooting it, he's not afraid of doing different things. He's a remarkable man and racing is lucky to have him.”

ITV Racing colleague Jason Weaver, who rode Mister Baileys to victory in the 2000 Guineas in 1994 and Double Trigger in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot in 1995 for Johnston, said: “If you go from early on, from training on the bomb site, from his vet background, he has a complete understanding of the horse. He is a great operator of the horse and his whole system is a well-oiled machine. He has a great attitude, he's very much single-minded.

“People say that horses are like their trainers, and he is like his horses, he'll keep pushing and he is always tough at the finish.

“He's very easy to work with, you go and get on with it. He knows what his job is, he's done it so now you go and do yours. He gives his riders free reign which makes your job easier as a jockey.”

TERF Named TAKE2 August Donor of the Month

The Thoroughbred Education and Research Foundation (TERF), an offshoot of Thoroughbred Charities of America established to provide focused funding for equine education and research, has provided funding to the tune of $4,000 for an aftercare education program and for its generosity, has been recognized as 'TAKE2 Donor of the Month' for August.

TAKE2 set a goal of raising $10,000 a month for 10 months in honor of its milestone 10th anniversary this year. With the generous help of previous 'Donors of the Month' Len Green and the Green Group, TAKE2 competitor Patricia Hurter, Empire Racing Club's Kyle Emmich, the New York Thoroughbred Breeders and New York Thoroughbred Breeding and Development Fund, and Michael Sternklar of Clear Stars Stable, the campaign is on track to meet its goal. More than $55,000 has been raised over the first 5 1/2 months of the year.

“We like to fund pilot studies by young researchers,” said Dr. Kathy Anderson, co-chair of TERF's board of trustees. “We want to support projects that are small enough that they fly under the radar of large funding agencies.”

The Labor Day event at Saratoga will feature TAKE2 Executive Director Andy Belfiore; TAKE2 President Rick Schosberg; and Dr. Keith Bogatch, an equine veterinarian who will speak to participants about the relationship between Thoroughbred owners and veterinarians and about how to decide when it's time to retire a racehorse.  Also scheduled to speak are Monique Coston from Akindale Thoroughbred Rescue; and Deanna Mancuso from Lucky Orphans.

Held at the Spa Verandas, located at the top of the stretch, the event will include a day at the races from a trackside seat; a light lunch; and the aftercare presentation. Tickets are $25.

For additional information or to RSVP, contact Andy Belfiore at take2breds@gmail.com. Tickets are limited and the deadline to RSVP is Friday, Aug. 26.

Roaring Lion Colt Becomes Mark Johnston’s 5,000th Winner

Ahmad Al Shaikh's twice-raced 2-year-old colt Dubai Mile (Ire) (Roaring Lion–Beach Bunny {Ire}, by High Chaparral {Ire}), a €20,000 Goffs Orby graduate, notched a landmark score for Mark Johnston when making all in Wednesday's British Stallion Studs EBF Restricted Novice S. at Kempton. The March-foaled chestnut, who was let go as the 6-5 favourite, became the trainer's 5,000th winner when annexing the one-mile test by an impressive four lengths from 13-8 market rival Super Mo (Uncle Mo).

1st-Kempton, £6,800, Nov, 8-24, 2yo, 8f (AWT), 1:42.35, st/sl.
DUBAI MILE (IRE) (c, 2, Roaring Lion–Beach Bunny {Ire} {SW & G1SP-Ire, $263,884}, by High Chaparral {Ire}), a €20,000 Goffs Orby graduate penalised seven pounds for breaking through in an extended-mile test at Windsor earlier this month, broke sharply and raced on the lead from flagfall here. Scrubbed along to maintain control approaching the final quarter mile, the 6-5 favourite was safely clear passing the eighth pole and kept on powerfully in the closing stages to easily defeat 13-8 market rival Super Mo (Uncle Mo) by an impressive four lengths, becoming trainer Mark Johnston's 5,000th winner. “I liked him a lot when I won on him at Windsor, he was fairly raw and made his own running that day too,” said rider Daniel Muscutt of the G2 Royal Lodge S. entry. “He didn't really engage until horses came to him last time and he put himself in the right position again today. He travelled much smoother through the early part of the race, with a bit of company, and as soon as I gave him the office in the straight he dropped his head to the floor and galloped away. That seems to be a trait of the few Roaring Lions I have ridden. He's a big baby and has plenty of scope and, next year, he'll be a nice 3-year-old over a little bit further. He's got a great action, he's a well-balanced colt and covers a lot of ground. He's a nice horse and, hopefully, he'll keep improving.” Reflecting on his unique achievement, Johnston added, “It's obviously a bit different from breaking the [British] record in 2018, you could say no one has reached 4,194 winners, so it's not as if I'm breaking new ground. It's just another landmark and setting the bar higher for people to try to reach. The main thing is the whole business revolves around winners and a lot of winners means a lot of happy owners and, hopefully, we can continue doing the same thing. The most important thing is Charlie's now getting credit for something that he's been doing for quite some time in the business. It's certainly part of the plan that he will take over at some stage in the relatively near future, but we don't know when that will be.” Dubai Mile is the ninth foal and winner produced by stakes-winning G1 Pretty Polly S. runner-up Beach Bunny (Ire) (High Chaparral {Ire}), herself the leading performer out of an unraced half to G1 1000 Guineas heroine Miss France (Ire) (Dansili {GB}). The March-foaled chestnut is kin to stakes-winning dual Group 3 placegetter Naadirr (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}), Listed Naas Fillies Sprint victrix Beach Belle (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and a weanling colt by Sottsass (Fr). Beach Belle, in turn, is the dam of Listed King Charles II S. winner Surf Dancer (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}). Sales history: €20,000 Ylg '21 GOFOR. Lifetime Record: 3-2-0-0, $9,379.
