‘So Respected And So Loved By Everybody’: Hall Of Famer Velazquez Records 1,000th Saratoga Victory

Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez secured his record-extending 1,000th career win at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., when he guided Precursory to victory in Race 8 on Thursday for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott.

Sent to post at odds of 6-1 in the seven-furlong maiden special weight for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up, Precursory settled in third position before taking a head lead at the stretch call. Tizzy in the Sky, the odds-on mutuel favorite under Joel Rosario, came calling in the final furlong but Precursory responded to left-handed encouragement from Velazquez to win by a neck in a final time of 1:24.04 over the fast main track.

“I was hoping I had something left for her. I said, 'Come on mama, you've got to keep going,'” Velazquez said. “I got her a little closer to that other horse and she gave me that extra to hold a neck in front of the other horse. Even on the gallop out, she held on pretty good.”

Velazquez said he tried to follow his usual day-to-day routine as he approached the milestone.

“I don't change anything. I've been here way too long to start changing things,” Velazquez said. “I try to do the best that's possible in the race that I'm riding with the horse that I'm riding. I go race by race and try to study the race and see who is the competition and where I should be. I don't try to push it. I ride my races and I think that's why I've been successful.”

The 50-year-old native of Puerto Rico, who was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 2012, is also Saratoga's all-time leader in stakes wins [198] and Grade 1 wins [48].

Velazquez notched the first of his five Saratoga titles in 1998 aboard the Mott-trained Clever Actor. The Hall of Fame conditioner noted the tenacity of Velazquez in the fight to the wire.

“When they come down to a photo finish, if you're betting, you might want to put your money on him. He's been very tough when it comes down to the wire,” Mott said. “Funny enough, he won the meet here in his first riding title on one of our horses on the last day of the meet. He was tied and he won on a horse for Mr. [Bruce] Lunsford.”

In 2004, Velazquez won the Saratoga title with a then record 64 victories on the season. On September 9, 2001, he visited the Saratoga winner's circle six times for a single-day record, and on July 27, 2013, he notched his 694th victory here to became Saratoga's all-time winningest jockey.

The veteran rider lives with his wife Leona on Long Island and are the proud parents of Lerina and Michael Patrick. He reflected on his first visit to the Spa with then jockey and fellow Hall of Famer Angel Cordero, Jr., who is credited with first recognizing the talent of a young Velazquez. Cordero, Jr. would later work as agent for Velazquez until about two years ago and the pair remain close.

“It [Saratoga] was very special for Angel and Angel made it special for me,” Velazquez said. “He put it in my head when I came here that if you can thrive at Saratoga, you can thrive everywhere you go. That grew on me little by little as I got better and I understood the meaning of riding in Saratoga and the sacrifice and all the things you do with family to do what's best being here at Saratoga. It's a special place to be here and to be with my family and me and my wife 28 years later are still together.”

In October 2013, Velazquez became North America's all-time money-earning jockey. He holds the title to this day with purse earnings in excess of $455 million.

A two-time winner of the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Jockey, Velazquez was honored with the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award in 2009. His Classic scores include a pair of wins in the Belmont Stakes (Rags to Riches, 2007; Union Rags, 2012) and Kentucky Derby triumphs with Authentic (2020), Always Dreaming (2017) and Animal Kingdom (2011). He boasts 18 Breeders' Cup wins in his storied career.

Ron Anderson, agent for Velazquez, noted the impact the Hall of Famer has had on the Saratoga jockey colony and on the industry as a whole as the chairman of the Jockeys' Guild Board of Directors.

“He's so respected and so loved by everybody, and you know, he works tirelessly for all these kids,” Anderson said. “They'll be talking about him 50 years from now with what he did, trying to help the Guild and everybody.”

Speaker’s Corner Ships West For Del Mar’s ‘Win And You’re In’ Pat O’Brien

Headed by Godolphin's East Coast invader Speaker's Corner, a field of 10 fast older horses will do battle at Del Mar Saturday in the 37th edition of the Pat O'Brien Stakes, a race named for the prolific movie actor and good friend of Bing Crosby who helped him found Del Mar racetrack in 1937.

The seven-panel test, which carries a purse of $250,000 and Grade 2 status, will go as Race 9 on the 10-race program with a post time of approximately 6:02 p.m. The O'Brien is a Breeders' Cup Win and You're In Challenge Series race that provides a fees-paid berth in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile, plus travel allowances.

Speaker's Corner, a 4-year-old colt by Street Sense who has been shipped west from Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott's barn at Saratoga for the test, comes into the feature with a stellar record that shows six wins, two seconds and two thirds in 11 starts for earnings of $722,130. He's been hooking into some of the best horses in the country of late – namely Flightline and Life Is Good – and though the O'Brien is hardly a soft spot, it surely will be an easier one for the homebred bay.

He gets the saddle services of Hall of Fame rider Mike Smith and they'll start from Post 8 in the deep chute on Del Mar's backside. They've been installed a stout 6-5 favorite.

Two of his chief foes in the extended dash are Kretz Racing's American Theorem and Laurel River, a chestnut colt owned and bred by Juddmonte.

American Theorem comes into the O'Brien off a sparkling score in the six-furlong Bing Crosby Stakes at Del Mar on July 30. The gray 5-year-old ridgling by Horse of the Year and Triple Crown winner American Pharoah had preceded that Grade 1 tally with a victory in the Grade 2 Triple Bend Stakes at Santa Anita on May 29. The stretch runner is going in the finest form of his life and now has four wins in 12 starts for purses of $531,967. Joe Bravo will ride him once again Saturday.

Laurel River is an up-and-comer out of the Bob Baffert barn who enters the race off a pair of handy allowance wins at a mile at Del Mar, one this past July 31 and the other all the way back in September of 2021. The Into Mischief 4-year-old colt gets the meet's leading rider in Juan Hernandez as he faces the toughest test of his young career.

Here's the full field for the O'Brien in post position order with riders and morning line odds:

Kagel, Barber or Madaket Stables' C Z Rocket (Umberto Rispoli up, 15-1); Bernsen and Mia Familia Racing's Principe Carlo (Victor Espinoza, 15-1); Brinkerhoff or Grayson, Jr.'s Restrainedvengence (Tiago Pereira, 30-1); American Theorem (4-1); Gary Barber's Get Her Number (Ramon Vazquez, 8-1); Sondereker Racing, Felkin or Thorn's The Chosen Vron (Hector Berrios, 12-1); Laurel River (5-1); Speaker's Corner; Pegram, Watson and Weitman's Defunded (Abel Cedillo, 8-1), and Joe Peacock, Jr.'s Senor Buscador (Edwin Maldonado, 30-1).

The 8-year-old gelding C Z Rocket, a 12-time winner of more than $1.5 million, won the Pat O'Brien in 2020.

Defunded, another out of the Baffert barn, shortens up after a series of two-turn races. The Dialed In 4-year-old gelding is a three-time winner of $337,600.

Get Her Number was most recently second in the Bing Crosby to American Theorem. He, too, is by Dialed In, though he's a 4-year-old colt who has won over a half million in purses.

First post for the Saturday card will be 2 p.m.

Broome Raids For Sword Dancer

Ballydoyle's Broome (Ire) (Australia {GB}), whose most recent trip across the Atlantic resulted in a strong runner-up effort behind Yibir (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) in last year's GI Breeders' Cup Turf, faces nine others–including defending champion Gufo (Declaration of War)–in Saturday's GI Resorts World Casino Sword Dancer Invitational S. at Saratoga. The 12-furlong event earns the winner a fees-paid berth into this year's Turf at Keeneland Nov. 5.

The 6-year-old entire comes into the Sword Dancer a relatively fresh animal, as he will be making just his fourth start of the season at the weekend. A first-up fifth in the G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup over 10 panels, Broome took command of the June 18 G2 Hardwicke S. at the Royal meeting after a quarter-mile and boldly led the balance, staying up the rise to score by 3 1/4 decisive lengths.

“He made the running. It was a good effort and we were delighted with him,” said trainer Aidan O'Brien, in search of a first win at the historic upstate New York oval. “It was probably his best run of the year, really. We felt he came back every bit as good if not better than before. He's a horse that's maturing very well.”

Off at longshot odds when last seen in the G1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth QIPCO S. back at Ascot, he locked up with G1 Irish Derby hero Westover (GB) (Frankel {GB}) at midway and ultimately got the better of that battle, but weakened out two furlongs down and finished better than a dozen lengths in back of Pyledriver (GB) (Harbour Watch {Ire}) in fourth.

O'Brien does not believe that forecast rains Friday will dampen Broome's chances.

“I don't think he'll mind it. He has form with ease in the ground,” O'Brien said. “I spoke to the lads and they're happy with the way he's training. Hopefully, he will run well.”

Ryan Moore, who rode Japan (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) to a runner-up effort behind Gufo last summer, retains the call.
