‘He Went Off Beautifully Relaxed Today’: Flightline Drills At Del Mar For Pacific Classic

He's an impressive looking animal when he's just standing out on the track. Put him in motion and he'll take your breath away.

Flightline, the undefeated son of Tapit, put in another workout Saturday at Del Mar as trainer John Sadler continues preparing his star equine for his next race, the TVG Pacific Classic (G1) September 3.

With regular exercise rider Juan Leyva aboard, Flightline broke off at the five-furlong pole and set fractions of :24.30, :36.40, :48.20, 1:00, before stopping the clock at 1:12.20. It was the best workout of seven for the distance on the day. Trainer John Sadler said it was what he was looking for.

“Very good,” Sadler said afterward. “He stayed on a nice steady pattern and he went off beautifully relaxed today.”

Sadler says Flightline will have two more works with another one planned for next Saturday morning, two weeks before the Classic.

“The next one is the one we'll focus in on a little bit more,” Sadler said, “and then he'll have an easy work the week before.”

Sadler has always taken a patient approach with his 4-year old budding superstar, a $1-million yearling purchase by Hronis Racing, et al. Flightline has only raced four times in his career and didn't race until he was 3, breaking his maiden in his debut by 13 1/4-lengths at Santa Anita. That was in April of 2021. He followed with a 12 3/4-length victory in an entry level allowance at Del Mar on closing weekend in September.

There were rumblings about the Breeders' Cup but Sadler refused to take the bait and chose to run instead in the G1 Malibu at Santa Anita in December. Flightline romped again, this time by 11 lengths. For anyone keeping score, that's three wins by a combined total of 37 lengths.

Sadler had planned for Flightline to make his 4-year old debut in March but a strained hock delayed his return until June. When he came back he looked no worse for wear, crushing an excellent field in the G1 Met Mile at Belmont Park. It was the first time the colt had ventured outside of California and he handled it well, though he “only” won by six lengths this time.

That was on Belmont Stakes Day. Flightline has been working every week since July 9, two at Santa Anita and now four at Del Mar. Two of those six outings have been bullet works.

Dalika Shows Heart For Beverly D. Win At Churchill, Earns BC Filly And Mare Berth

German-bred Dalika set the early pace then battled back gamely when runner-up Princess Grass got her head in front briefly in early stretch to win the $500,000 Beverly D. Stakes (G1) by a half-length Saturday at Churchill Downs.

The race was staged at the Louisville track for the first time amidst a special one-day stand-alone event. Previously, it was run at Churchill-owned Arlington Park near Chicago until that track was shuttered in 2021.

Tracked by Princess Grace for most of the trip, Dalika, under Brian Hernandez Jr., finished the 1 1/8 miles in 1:45.31 on turf rated as good and earned her first win at the top level as well as an automatic entry into the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf (G1) at Keeneland, to be run at 1 3/16 miles November 5.

Family Way was third in the field of five. Favorite Rougir was never a factor in an unplaced finish.

Trained by Al Stall Jr. for owner Bal Mar Equine, Dalika was Grade 3 winner prior to Saturday's race, she finished fifth in the Diana (G1) July 16 at Saratoga after posting a second in the Mint Julep (G3) at Churchill in early June in her only other starts this year.

A 6-year-old daughter of Pastorius out of the Hurricane Run mare Drawn to Run, Dalika has 8-7-0 record, including her victory in the 2021 Robert G. Dick Memorial Stakes (G3) at Delaware Park, from 28 career starts. She was bred by Gestut Ammerland.

Dalika returned $17.02.

This story will be updated.

Damon’s Mound Cruises To Saratoga Special Win

'TDN Rising Star' Damon's Mound (Girvin) backed up his jaw-dropping, double-digit debut victory at Churchill Downs with an impressive, 3 1/4-length decision over favored 'Rising Star' Gulfport (Uncle Mo) in Saturday's GII Saratoga Special S.

Facing just three rivals here, the 9-5 second-choice trailed the closely bunched quartet in the garden spot as Gulfstream debut winner Super Chow (Lord Nelson) flew through an opening quarter in :21.94. Gulfport, a perfect two-for-two to begin his career, led by a 12 1/4-length win in the Bashford Manor S., was forced to check dramatically beneath Joel Rosario as the pacesetter drifted out approaching the quarter pole. Damon's Mound, meanwhile, was out in the clear while three wide and beginning to make a menacing move to challenge for command.

Damon's Mound hit the top of the stretch in the four path under confident handling by Gabriel Saez, switched to his right lead as they straightened and left the pacesetter in the dust from there to win for fun. Gulfport re-rallied after his aforementioned trouble on the far turn to finish with interest without threatening the winner.

Michelle Lovell, who finished second three times at Saratoga as a jockey in 1993, was saddling her first Saratoga starter as a trainer Saturday. She began training in 2003.

“It was perfect. I was so happy where we were laying where we were tracking,” said Lovell. “And then Gabe couldn't hold him any longer and he just let him creep on up there and make his little move. He did his job.”

Damon's Mound has plenty of options going forward, per Lovell, including the GI Hopeful S. Sept. 5 at the Spa, the GI Breeders' Futurity Oct. 8 at Keeneland and the GIII Iroquois S. Sept. 17 at Churchill Downs.

“It's incredible. All props to the horse,” Lovell said. “He's just awesome and he proved it and spoke for himself. I couldn't be happier for his owners. They're breeders, they [didn't sell him], and they got rewarded for it. I wouldn't have traded him for any horse. I thought he had an awesome chance, and he showed it. I'm glad he did.”

Heavy Hitters Work in Preparation for Runhappy Travers Card

A host of probable starters for the GI Runhappy Travers S. at Saratoga recorded works at the Spa Saturday as they each turn their attention to the 1 1/4-mile historic test for sophomores Aug. 27.

Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher watched runaway GIII Dwyer S. winner and 'TDN Rising Star' Charge It (Tapit) soar through an “awesome” five-furlong breeze over the main track, completing the solo exercise in 1:01.01 (5/27).

“Super work. Loved the way he did it, moving great and galloped out really strongly on a track that's not real fast,” said Pletcher.

“I don't think he's going to win by 23,” said Pletcher, with a laugh. “[But] I think he's very confident and he's doing well. Mentally, he's made big strides, so he's a horse that I think has continued to develop and get better and better. This morning's work was another indication of that.”

Also on the tab for Pletcher was GI Alabama S. probable Nest (Curlin), who Pletcher had considered for the Travers but ultimately said the Alabama Aug. 20 is the more likely target. The dual Grade I winner and GI Belmont S. runner-up breezed a half-mile in :50.60 (71/86) in company with Saratoga debut maiden winner Up to the Mark (Not This Time) (:50.02; 53/86).

“I thought she did very well. [She] went a little bit easy the first part and picked it up at the finish and galloped out really well,” said Pletcher. “She seems to be holding her form. We did talk about it [the Travers], but we just felt like as long as she was ready to run back in the Alabama, a mile and a quarter was perfect for her. We felt like it was too good of a spot to pass up.”

Chad Brown breezed several Runhappy Travers Day hopefuls over the main track Saturday led by GISW Zandon (Upstart), who covered a half-mile in :49.77 (44/86), while GI Preakness S. winner Early Voting (Gun Runner) drilled a half-mile in :49.78 (47/86) in company with GII Amsterdam S. runner-up Accretive (Practical Joke), who is targeting the GI H. Allen Jerkens Memorial. Runhappy Travers contender and Curlin S. winner 'TDN Rising Star' Artorius went an easy solo half-mile in :50.09 (56/86).

“It went great. They all worked good. Zandon went first and he went a half of a mile in :49 and change, out in 1:01 and change. He looked really good,” Brown said. “Early Voting went a half of a mile outside of Accretive, who will run in the H. Allen Jerkens. They went excellent. I thought Early Voting was really moving over the track today. He is very much in consideration for the Travers after this work today.”

Brown also breezed GISW and Haskell third 'TDN Rising Star' Jack Christopher (Munnings) five-eighths in 1:00.80 (3/27) in company to the outside of allowance-winning 3-year-old colt Key Point (Into Mischief). He is targeting the seven-furlong GI H. Allen Jerkens Memorial on the Runhappy Travers undercard.

“Jack Christopher really picked it up this week. I was very pleased with that because he worked a little slow last week with some traffic and stuff,” Brown said. “That kind of got botched a little bit. So, he needed to do a stronger piece of work today and I thought we went super.”

The Iowa-bred Travers hopeful Ain't Life Grand (Not This Time) had his first work on Saturday over the Saratoga main track since arriving from Prairie Meadows. The Iowa Derby winner coasted through a half-mile in :48.23 (13/86).

“He's settled in and doing really good. He worked good this morning, so, so far so good,” said trainer Kelly Von Hemel. “I'm not there, but everybody that was there was happy with the work. It was a solid time and everything was good.”

Cyberknife (Gun Runner), a narrow winner of the GI TVG.com Haskell S., worked five-eighths in 1:01.05 (8/27) over the main track Saturday in company with the 4-year-old Supremacy (Constitution) (1:01.90) for trainer Brad Cox.
