Summer Breezes: Aug. 21, 2022

Some of the most highly anticipated races during the summer racing season are the 'baby' races during the boutique meetings at both Saratoga and Del Mar and at Ellis Park, which attracts its fair share of high-priced offspring from a variety of top national outfits. Summer Breezes highlights debuting 2-year-olds at those meetings that have been sourced at the breeze-up sales earlier in the year, with links to their under-tack previews. Already this year at Saratoga, City Man (Mucho Macho Man), Mo Strike (Uncle Mo) and Empress Tigress (Classic Empire)–each a graduate of the 2-year-old sales–have already struck at stakes level, while the likes of juvenile purchases and 'TDN Rising Stars' Taiba (Gun Runner), We The People (Constitution) and Onesto (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) have also left their mark on graded/group competition this season. To follow are the horses entered for Sunday:

‘He’s A Horse That Doesn’t Seem Distance Limited’: Morley Hopes Tide Of The Sea Can Halt Winless Skid In John’s Call

Flying P Stable's Tide of the Sea will look to return to winning ways in the $135,000 John's Call on Wednesday at Saratoga Race Course.

The 1 5/8-mile Mellon turf course marathon is for older horses who have not won a graded stakes on the turf this year.

Trained by Tom Morley, Tide of the Sea made his first start off the claim for new connections in his last outing, finishing third in an off-the-turf 1 1/4-mile optional claiming event on July 28 at the Spa, his first career start over dirt. The effort came on the heels of a distant seventh-place finish over yielding Belmont Park turf in June when he was haltered for $62,500 from former trainer Mike Maker.

“He's a horse that doesn't seem distance limited,” said Morley. “We gelded him after we claimed him and he ran very disappointing the day we claimed him, so we were a little bit in trepidation of whether the horse still wanted to do it.”

Morley said he was encouraged by the recent effort from Tide of the Sea when he set the pace and lost second by a nose.

“We brought a fresh horse over the other day. It rained just before the race, so the race came off the turf and he had never run on dirt,” Morley said. “But fair play to Jay [Provenzano of Flying P Stable], he said, 'If we're ever going to find out if he can do it, today is the day.' So, we let him take his chance. I was very proud of the horse, he tried incredibly hard in that race. Hopefully, he tries as hard on Wednesday.”

The 6-year-old son of English Channel is in search of his first win since a 1 3/4-length score in Japan Turf Cup in October at Laurel Park. The bay gelding began his career with Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott before transferring to Maker in June 2020. From there, he scored two allowance victories that summer before earning the best win of his career in the W.L. McKnight (G3) last January at Gulfstream Park.

He went on to pick up a graded placing when a close second in the Mac Diarmida (G2) at Gulfstream two starts before a good runner-up finish to dual Grade 1-winner Gufo in the Grand Couturier going 1 1/2 miles over good Belmont turf last July. His best finishes in 11 starts since were a close fourth in the Kentucky Downs Preview Turf Cup at Ellis Park, his win in the Japan Turf Cup and his recent third at the Spa.

Tide of the Sea, who was bred in Kentucky by Juddmonte Farms, boasts field-best earnings of $475,899 through a record of 5-5-2 from 25 starts.

Morley said that while Tide of the Sea is entered in a 1 1/2-mile turf optional claimer on Sunday at the Spa, his preference is to run in the John's Call.

Hall of Famer Javier Castellano will ride from post 3.

Monmouth Stud's Oceans Map will stretch out from a close second-place finish going 1 1/16 miles on July 29 at Monmouth Park for trainer Gregg Sacco. A dark bay son of Liam's Map, Oceans Map earned a 90 Beyer Speed Figure for the effort, the highest last out figure in the field.

The John's Call will be the farthest Oceans Map has raced in his career, but he has demonstrated his ability in longer turf routes with a win in the 1 1/2-mile Cape Henlopen last August at Delaware Park. The 1 1/2-length victory was the last time Oceans Map visited the winner's circle, but he has put together good performances since when fifth, beaten two lengths, in the Cliff Hanger in May over good turf at Monmouth and with his recent near miss in third-level allowance optional claiming company.

Jose Lezcano has the call from post 4.

Trainer Mike Maker will send out two contenders in Michael Ryan's Bluegrass Parkway and Three Diamonds Farm's Girl Dad.

Bluegrass Parkway, a 6-year-old Quality Road gelding, was last seen finishing sixth in the Colonial Cup on July 27 at Colonial Downs, beaten just 3 1/4 lengths after going three wide and weakening in the 1 1/2-mile contest. His other start this year was in a 1 1/4-mile optional claimer on July 1 at Belmont where he closed from last-of-9 to finish sixth, 4 1/2-lengths behind the victorious Dynadrive.

Bluegrass Parkway was a determined winner of an optional claimer last January at Gulfstream Park and in the Kentucky Downs Preview Turf Cup last August. He finished third in the Point of Entry in October at Belmont to cap his 5-year-old campaign.

Girl Dad will look to go from claim to fame as he makes his stakes debut in his first start for Maker. The 4-year-old Malibu Moon gelding was claimed for $35,000 out of a close eighth-place effort on July 22 at the Spa where he was defeated 2 3/4 lengths in a tight finish going one mile.

Girl Dad's two wins are a maiden victory at sixth asking last February and an optional claiming event two months later at Tampa Bay Downs. The John's Call will be his first time racing beyond nine furlongs.

Tyler Gaffalione rides Bluegrass Parkway from post 2 while Luis Saez is tasked with the ride aboard Girl Dad from post 1.

Buttonwood Farm's Sa'ad returns to the flat after two races over hurdles for conditioner Keri Brion. A 4-year-old French-bred son of Tamayuz, Sa'ad won over the flat going 1 1/2 miles on May 7 at Great Meadow before a pair of off-the-board efforts stretching out over the jumps at Colonial Downs. Sa'ad finished a close second over soft going at Toulouse last June in the Derby du Languedo.

Irad Ortiz Jr. rides from post 5.

Completing the field is last-out winner Hieroglyphics [post 6, Jose Gomez] for trainer Naipaul Chatterpaul. The veteran 8-year-old son of Pioneerof the Nile will make his 45th lifetime start and arrives from a rallying four-length victory in an $18,000 claimer going nine furlongs August 6 at the Spa. He won Saratoga's Better Talk Now in 2017, defeating a field that included Snap Decision, who has since won three Grade 1s over jumps.

The John's Call is slated as Race 9 on Wednesday's 10-race program. First post is 1:05 p.m. (ET).

Fahey Seeks Second Straight Prix Morny Win, To Send Out The Ridler In Breeders’ Cup Qualifier At Deauville

Steve Bradley's Royal Ascot winner The Ridler will take on four rivals Sunday in the Darley Prix Morny (G1) for 2-year-olds over the straight course at Deauville.

The winner of the about six-furlong contest is guaranteed an automatic starting position into the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G1) this fall at Keeneland through the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series: Win and You're In.

TVG will televise the Darley Prix Morny live, with post time scheduled for 8:33 a.m. ET.

The Ridler, a son of Brazen Beau, already secured an automatic berth into the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint when he scored a shocking 50-1 win in the Norfolk Stakes (G2) at Royal Ascot on June 16. He represents Yorkshire-based trainer Richard Fahey, who won the Prix Morny race 12 months ago with Perfect Power.

“He came out of the Norfolk great but when you're a Group 2 winner there aren't a lot of places you can go,” Fahey said of The Ridler. “He's working very well and we're very happy with him. It's the first Group 1 2-year-old race of the year; we can race without a penalty and we're looking forward to it.”

Amo Racing Limited's Persian Force won the Close Brothers July Stakes (G2) at Newmarket on July 7 but finished a distant second behind the impressive Little Big Bear in the Keeneland Phoenix Stakes (G1) at The Curragh on August 6.

Trainer Richard Hannon is hopeful his colt can return to winning ways here.

“He ran a good race in Ireland,” said Hannon. “I didn't think there was a 2-year-old that could beat him seven lengths, but there we are. He came back in good shape.”

It was in 2001 with Johannesburg when Ireland's champion trainer Aidan O'Brien last won the Darley Prix Morny before going on to win that year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Belmont Park. On Sunday, he runs the first two finishers from the Darley Prix Robert Papin (G2) on July 17 at Chantilly in Blackbeard and The Antarctic.

The only filly in the race is the Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners' Manhattan Jungle. The daughter of Bungle Inthejungle, trained in Newmarket by Amy Murphy, has won three of five starts. She finished a length behind The Antarctic over the same course and distance in last week's Darley Prix de Cabourg (G3).

Notable fillies to have won the Prix Morny in recent years include the Wesley Ward-trained pair of Lady Aurelia in 2016 and Campanelle in 2020.

The Breeders' Cup Challenge Series is an international series of 82 stakes races whose winners receive automatic starting positions and fees paid into a corresponding race of the Breeders' Cup World Championships, which will be held at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington on November 4-5.

As part of the benefits of the Challenge Series, Breeders' Cup will pay the entry fees for the Darley Prix Morny winner to start in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint, which will be run at 5 ½ furlongs at Keeneland. Breeders' Cup will also provide a travel allowance for all starters based outside of North America to compete in the World Championships. The Challenge winner must be nominated to the Breeders' Cup program by the Championships' pre-entry deadline of October 24 to receive the rewards.

The 2022 Thoroughbred Makeover Event: Meet Minnesota’s Madisson Walker

Each year since 2010, as Thoroughbreds across the country face the end of their racing careers, the team at the Maryland-based Retired Racehorse Project step up with one purpose: “furthering founder Steuart Pittman's vision to increase demand for Thoroughbreds after racing and restoring their prominence in the equestrian world.” With this goal in mind, the RRP created the inaugural 'Thoroughbred Trainer Challenge' in 2012–an event which gave four trainers just 100 days and an opportunity to showcase what a recently retired racehorse could do in a potential second career.

That event, which packed the 2012 Pennsylvania Horse World Expo, was the precursor to what became the first RRP Thoroughbred Makeover event in 2013. Held at renowned Pimlico Race Course in October 2013, the initial Makeover featured 26 trainers from 15 states who were given three months to re-train an off-the-track Thoroughbred in the discipline of their choice–from eventing, jumpers, and dressage, to polo, western riding, and police work.

What started as a small opportunity with just 26 trainers quickly blossomed into a national event and, in 2015, the annual Makeover event made the move to the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. Now with a $100,000 purse, split between the placings in the various divisions, on the line, the competition provided an outlet for trainers and racing organizations around the world to showcase the versatility of their retired racehorses.

Held this upcoming October 12-15, this year's rendition will host 377 entries–one of whom is Minnesota's 17-year-old Madisson Walker.

Together with her mount, Minnesota-bred Claire Sailing (Stay Thirsty), Madisson will tackle the Show Hunter division this Fall.

“It was in 2019 that I acquired my first off-the-track Thoroughbred,” Walker said, when asked how she got her start with the breed. “Sword of David (Line of David) and I have gone on to compete all over the U.S. and that was when I discovered that many people in the hunter/jumper show circuit do not care for Thoroughbreds.”

“Hearing numerous amounts of negativity around them and being turned down from trainers for riding Thoroughbreds really encouraged me to want to make a difference.”

Together with her mother, Kristina Walker, Madisson created Minnesota-based Koch Thoroughbred Transformations.

“We have done so much in our first few months of being open, and we really value the horses we get in, as well as the owners who trust us with them,” Walker said. “To me, these are not just horses, they are my passion. I love [the ones] that give me a challenge and then being able to show how far I can get them with time, trust, and patience.”

Her 2022 Makeover entry is Claire Sailing, a 4-year-old filly bred by Jack Guggisberg who made her last of three starts at Canterbury Park June 12.

“She just did not enjoy her job as a racehorse,” Walker noted. “But that works perfectly for me as she is very beautiful and is making the transition into being a hunter/jumper easily.”

To be eligible for the Makeover, horses must have had an official workout or start since July 1, 2020, but fewer than 15 retraining rides prior to Dec. 31, 2021.

“I feel for her having had her last race on June 12, and only about 10 rides on her to date, that she is right on target,” Walker said. “She is very young and all of the new experiences at a horse show are so different from life at the track.”

Walker said she feels confident that the future for Claire Sailing is bright.

“She competed in her first over-fences class Aug. 6 and did very well. I am excited to see how she continues to progress as she is such a smart and willing mare,” she said.

Following the Makeover in October, in which many of the entries are then placed on the market for sale, Walker hopes to use her experience to pay it forward, putting any money made from Claire Sailing's future sale back into Thoroughbred rescue.

“I'll ensure she finds a suitable show home who will continue to grow her skills, and the money from her adoption can go back into our non-profit to continue to transition other OTTB's.”

At just 17 years old, Walker is already thinking of the future–both in life and in horses.

“I want people to see and respect me as a trainer, not just as a junior,” she said, referencing her being one of this year's youngest competitors.

When asked if she felt any additional pressure about that particular accolade, she added, “I find that I put more pressure on myself to do well to represent my state, as well as the aftercare program my mom and I run.”

And while adult life is on her doorstep, Walker plans to keep horses in her future.

“I have been looking into a lot of different colleges lately, [including] Hollins University due to their riding program. I know I want to work with off-the-track Thoroughbreds into my adult life, and want to make a living out of helping these horses transition into new careers.”
