Irish Champion Or Champion S. Possible For Adayar After Prep Run

Godolphin's 2021 G1 Derby and G1 King George VI And Queen Elizabeth QIPCO S. winner Adayar (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) is progressing in his training, with the Sept. 10 G1 Irish Champion S. at Leopardstown or the Oct. 15 G1 Champion S. at Ascot under consideration by trainer Charlie Appleby. However, the trainer would like to get a prep run into the bay, who has yet to make a 2022 start after missing several targets earlier this year.

“He's in full training and has the spring back in his step,” said Appleby. “I'm not going to set him a target, but let him tell me when he's ready. The great thing is, it's the Adayar we've seen before that we're seeing at home now.

“In an ideal world I would like to get a prep into him before either the Irish Champion S. or the Champion S. But most importantly the excitement is back in the camp over this horse like it was earlier in the year.”

After his Ascot exploits last July, Adayar was fourth in the G1 Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and fifth returned to Ascot for his sophomore swansong in the G1 QIPCO Champion S.

Faucheux Gearing Up State-Bred Runners For Louisiana Cup Day

The highly anticipated Louisiana Cup Day will take place on Saturday, August 6 at Louisiana Downs. Nominations will close for the six stakes for Louisiana-breds on Saturday, July 23 with strong interest from horsemen for the races, each valued at $67,000.

The annual stakes day is always special for breeders, owners, trainers, and jockeys as the entire card shines the spotlight on Louisiana-breds. The options are plentiful with stakes written for juveniles, sprinters, and turf runners.

Trainer Ron Faucheux plans on sending several runners to Bossier City for Cup Day.

Fame Feather and Strong Beauty are in consideration for the Filly and Mare Sprint.

Fame Feather, a 7-year-old Lion Tamer mare, sprang the upset in the $75,000 Louisiana Legends Mademoiselle on June 4 at Evangeline Downs for Picard Thoroughbreds Racing Stable LLC. Strong Beauty, a 5-year-old daughter of Overanalyze, owned by Golden Rock Thoroughbreds, ran fourth.

Bertie's Galaxy has run in two editions of the Louisiana Cup Day sprint and exits a victory in the $75,000 Louisiana Legends Sprint on June 4 at Evangeline Downs. After conferring with owner Allen Cassedy, Faucheux is planning on giving the 6-year-old son of Greeley's Galaxy a few months off.

However, Ron Faucheux is considering testing Dorgenois, who just broke her maiden on July 15 at Evangeline Downs. Jim and Natalie Montgomery, prominent in Louisiana Quarter Horse racing, bred the daughter of Gormley to the Fusaichi Pegasus mare Money Peg.

“We love coming to Louisiana Downs for the big day,” said Faucheux.

Faucheux has many memories of his Louisiana-breds winning their Cup Day races, including millionaire Sunbean, who captured the 2016 Louisiana Turf Classic. One of his most popular competitors was the brilliant Monte Man.

A son of Custom for Carlos, bred by Val Murrell, Monte Man was claimed for just $5,000 by Ivery Sisters Racing in 2017 at Belmont Park. He made his first start in Louisiana on December 17, 2017, winning an allowance at Fair Grounds, prior to reeling off seven consecutive wins, including a victory in the 2018 Louisiana Cup Sprint at Louisiana Downs. The bay gelding earned $794,233 in 50 career starts, competing at each of the four Louisiana racetracks. He concluded his remarkable run in the $100,000 Louisiana Champions Day Sprint on December 11, 2021.

Murrell had always assured Faucheux and Brian Ivery that once Monte Man was ready to retire, he would have his own pasture at Clear Creek Stud in Folsom, Louisiana. Faucheux has made several trips to visit the popular gelding.

“He's doing great,” Faucheux said. “They are taking great care of Monte Man and he still looks racy! He was such a barn favorite, and we all miss him, but we always believe in doing right by our horses.”

The draw for the six features on Louisiana Cup Day will take place on Saturday, July 30. The stakes are as follows:

$67,000 Louisiana Cup Juvenile                        2 YO LA-Bred                            5½ furlongs

$67,000 Louisiana Cup Juvenile Fillies           2 YO Fillies LA-Bred                 5½ furlongs

$67,000 Louisiana Cup Filly & Mare Sprint   3 YO & Up F&M, LA-Bred          Six furlongs

$67,000 Louisiana Cup Sprint                            3 YO & Up LA-Bred                   Six furlongs

$67,000 Louisiana Cup Turf Classic                 3 YO & Up LA-Bred                1 1/16 miles (T)

$67,000 Louisiana Cup Distaff                           3 YO & Up F & M LA-Bred     1 1/16 miles (T)

Westover To Have ‘A Good Rest’ Before Coming Back In The Autumn

Classic hero Westover (GB) (Frankel {GB}), who won the G1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby at the end of June, will be freshened after his unplaced run in the G1 King George VI And Queen Elizabeth QIPCO S. on Saturday. A winner of the G3 bet365 Classic Trial in his seasonal debut in April, the Juddmonte colourbearer ran third in the G1 Cazoo Derby for trainer Ralph Beckett. The bay set a contested pace in the King George.

“I think it just wasn't our day,” said Barry Mahon, general manager for Juddmonte. “As we had said prior to the race, we were a little nervous coming into it on the back of being to Epsom and the Curragh and it was a tight enough timescale with such a horse.

“He got a bit warm in the prelims and a little excited and then in the parade ring he got in behind Emily Upjohn (GB (Sea The Stars {Ire}), which wasn't ideal.

“Then the race just didn't pan out in our favour. There wasn't a lot of pace and Westover was a little bit keen so we got left in front. It just wasn't ideal and wasn't our day.

“He'll have a good rest now, I spoke to Ralph this morning and the horse has come out of it fine. He has a couple of little overreaches on his hind leg where maybe in the first furlong or two when he crossed over to the rail something caught him from behind, but all just superficial.”

A G1 St Leger bid at Doncaster is under consideration, as well as possible appearances in the G2 Prix Niel and G1 Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Tromphe, but connections will take a patient approach.

“That's [the St Leger is] definitely on the agenda,” Mahon continued. “And also all the other middle-distance races such as the Prix Niel and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and whatever else, but the horse is going to tell us where and when.

“We'll give him a good rest now and freshen him up for the autumn. We probably won't even talk about a race for probably a month until we've seen how he is and then we'll start working towards something at that stage.

“He's trained great all season and one of his biggest attributes has been his calm, relaxed nature and we saw on Saturday that we'd probably just pushed him far enough and he was beginning to get warm beforehand, he just needs a rest now and we'll regroup for the autumn.”

Good Magic Colt Debuts a ‘Rising Star’ for Brown

Rodeo Creek Racing's Blazing Sevens (Good Magic), representing the same red-hot trainer in Chad Brown who conditioned his champion juvenile sire (by Curlin), garnered the 'TDN Rising Star' distinction in Saratoga's Sunday opener as he stalked and pulled away from a salty-looking bunch to become Good Magic's fifth individual winner. Off at odds of 9-2 as the public seemed to struggle to find the standout, Blazing Sevens broke well from the outside, but was out-footed by a couple as Bourbon Bash (City of Light) seized a clear lead. Blazing Sevens made his three-wide move to go and confront the pacesetter into a :46.45 half, and wore down that foe past the eighth pole en route to an easy 6 1/4-length tally in 1:13.20 while galloping out like he was just getting started.

Upgrade (Flatter), a $550,000 KEESEP yearling, was third; while Kentucky invader Faithful and True (Good Magic), a fast-breezing $450,000 OBSMAR grad who ticked down to 2-1 favoritism late, rounded out the super.

Blazing Sevens is the second foal and first to race out of a half-sister to 2012 GI Jamaica H. upsetter King David (Hat Trick {Jpn}). Dam Trophy Girl (Warrior's Reward)'s pair of wins came going long on the Turfway all-weather. Trophy Girl is by the same sire who produced the dam of one of Brown's four straight graded stakes winners at Monmouth Park Saturday in GIII Monmouth Cup S. winner Highly Motivated (Into Mischief). She has a yearling filly by Constitution and a filly foal by Goldencents. The 9-year-old visited another juvenile champ in Essential Quality for 2023.
