Derby-Winning Jockey Sonny Leon Shifting Tack To Gulfstream Park

Sonny Leon, upset winner of this year's Kentucky Derby aboard the Eric Reed-trained Rich Strike, will shift his tack from Ohio to Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., according to the Thoroughbred Daily News. Leon is listed on six mounts at Gulfstream on Saturday, July 16.

Jeff Perrin, Leon's agent in Ohio, will no longer represent the young rider. Instead, Bryce Soth will take over Leon's book.

“His last day in Ohio will be Friday and then he'll head to Florida,” Perrin told TDN. “He was friends with Emisael Jaramillo, who was second in the standings, and that jockey got hurt. He will be working with his agent, who has a good book of business. You can't blame Sonny. It's a great opportunity. We won the Kentucky Derby. We shocked the world.”

Leon, 32, is a native of Venezuela and rides regularly in Ohio at Belterra Park and Mahoning Valley where he has earned multiple riding titles.  The Kentucky Derby was Leon's first graded stakes win. Since coming to the United States in 2015, Leon has won 795 races from 5,338 mounts with purse earnings of more than $15 million.

Big Invasion Ready For Battle In Sunday’s Quick Call

Reeves Thoroughbred Racing's Big Invasion is one of two contenders, along with Nobals, bringing a four-race win streak into Sunday's Grade 3, $175,000 Quick Call presented by the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, a 5 1/2-furlong Mellon turf sprint for sophomores at Saratoga Race Course.

The Christophe Clement-trained Big Invasion, by Declaration of War, graduated at second asking in February over the Gulfstream Park turf and followed one month later over the same course with a three-length score in the five-furlong Texas Glitters.

Big Invasion shipped to Churchill Downs in May and captured the 5 1/2-furlong William Walker with a close stalking trip. Last out, Big Invasion demonstrated a new dimension, blitzing from nine-lengths off the pace under Joel Rosario to post a 3 1/4-length score in the seven-furlong Paradise Creek on May 29 at Belmont.

“That's Joel, he rides him and decides what style he wants to be ridden,” said Clement. “He's a very nice horse. I'm just hoping for some good weather because I don't want to run him on soft turf.”

Big Invasion will exit post 8 under Rosario.

Clement has also entered multiple-stakes winner Senbei for the main-track only.

Trainer Larry Rivelli has entered a pair of top contenders in Nobals and One Timer but said only one will contest the Quick Call as both are to be cross-entered in the $100,000 My Frenchman on Sunday at Monmouth Park.

Rivelli said Patricia's Hope's Nobals, a six-time winner by Noble Mission, is most likely to run at Saratoga. He enters on a four-race win streak dating to January 8 with a score in the 6 1/2-furlong Turfway Prevue over the synthetic and followed at the same track in April with a gate-to-wire win in the six-furlong Animal Kingdom. The bay gelding then shipped north to Woodbine to capture the six-furlong Woodstock over the Tapeta and followed last out with a 1 1/2-length win in a 5 1/2-furlong turf allowance on June 5 at Churchill Downs.

While his last four wins have come on the front end, Nobals captured the Arlington-Washington Futurity at seven furlongs over the synthetic in August with an off-the-pace approach. He stretched out to one mile on the turf in a productive juvenile campaign that ended with a close fifth, utilizing a closing approach under Irad Ortiz, Jr., in the Golden Mile in November at Del Mar on the Breeders' Cup undercard.

Rivelli said he went into the Del Mar race with high expectations, but the result prompted him to change tactics with the $3,500 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall Yearling Sale purchase.

“I thought that was going to be his lick. But we reserved him and rated him and we might have choked the speed out of him. I was disappointed in the effort and at that point I thought maybe we just had a horse,” Rivelli said. “So, we worked with him at the gate and put a little more speed into him and it all just worked out. As he got older, he got better and figured it out. The other day they ran right up to him and I thought they were going to run right by him at Churchill and he just re-broke.”

Rivelli said the revitalized Nobals is capable of taking his racetrack with him.

“He's a good shipper and runs on any surface,” Rivelli said. “He's just got faster and quicker since he's got older. He jumps out of there now a lot faster than he used to. The other day was a pretty good race at Churchill.”

Ortiz, Jr. retains the mount from post 4.

Patricia's Hope and Richard Ravin's One Timer, by Trappe Shot, is named in honor of Rivelli's son, Dominick, a promising hockey player.

“He's a real good hockey player. He's going to go to Miami of Ohio on a hockey scholarship. He plays juniors now,” Rivelli said. “My son is known for having one of the best one-timers, so it's a fitting name. Usually, when you name them after someone they're never any good, but this one worked out.”

A winner of 4-of-5 starts, the bay gelding captured the Victoria over the Woodbine synthetic last July and then shipped to Santa Anita in October to win the Speakeasy at five furlongs on turf. He closed out his 2-year-old campaign with a ninth-place finish, defeated just two lengths by the victorious Twilight Gleaming, in the Grade 2 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint in November at Del Mar.

One Timer made a successful seasonal debut last out, posting a 6 1/4-length score in the six-furlong Tom Ridge on May 23 over the Presque Isle Downs synthetic.

“He's been all over. He went to the Breeders' Cup. He went to Canada. The two of them are almost identical horses as far as their running style and the surface they run on,” Rivelli said. “I do want to get One Timer on the dirt at some point as he trains great on it.”

Hall of Famer Javier Castellano is named on One Timer from post 6.

Rebecca Hillen's Asymmetric, an Irish-bred Showcasing colt, captured the Group 2 Richmond last July at Goodwood before finishing third in the Group 1 Prix Morny in August at Deauville for former conditioner Alan King.

He debuted for conditioner Wesley Ward last out as the pacesetter in the Paradise Creek, opening up a six-length lead before settling for runner-up honors to Big Invasion.

Asymmetric, who races with blinkers off, will exit post 7 under Jamie Spencer.

Michael Dubb and Michael Caruso's New York-bred Run Curtis Run was a game second in the Grade 3 Futurity in October traveling six furlongs over the Belmont turf ahead of an off-the-board effort in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint.

Trained by Mike Maker, the Summer Front bay launched his sophomore campaign with a pair of starts at Churchill Downs, finishing third to Big Invasion in the William Walker and second last out to Nobals in a June 5 turf allowance.

Ricardo Santana, Jr. retains the mount from post 3.

Rounding out the field are allowance winner Sky and Sand [post 1, Tyler Gaffalione]; three-time state-bred winner Surprise Boss [post 2, Kendrick Carmouche]; and Dance Code [post 5, Abner Adorno],a stakes-winner on dirt. Hagler is entered for the main-track only.

The Quick Call is slated as Race 8 on Sunday's 10-race card. First post is 1:05 p.m. Eastern.

Saratoga Live will present daily coverage and analysis of the summer meet at Saratoga Race Course on the networks of FOX Sports. For the complete broadcast schedule, visit https://www.nyra.com/saratoga/racing/tv-schedule.

Gray Lyster Newest Electee To Breeders’ Cup Board Of Directors

The Breeders' Cup has announced the election results to its Board of Directors by the Breeders' Cup Members.

Barbara Banke (Stonestreet Farms), Walker Hancock (Claiborne Farm), Gray Lyster (Ashview Farm), and Elliott Walden (WinStar Farm) were each elected to serve a four-year term. Ms. Banke, Mr. Hancock, and Mr. Walden were re-elected as Directors.

Lyster, who was elected a Breeders' Cup Member in 2020, has been involved in the equine industry for his entire life. His family operates Ashview Farm. Lyster is a breeder, owner, farm operator, and consignor. He co-bred Breeders' Cup Champion Runhappy, and more recently co-bred Belmont Stakes (G1) first- and second-place finishers, Mo Donegal and Nest. Lyster is a member of Keeneland's Advisory Board of Directors and has served as the President of both the Thoroughbred Club of America and the Consignors and Commercial Breeders Association.

“Gray's extraordinary background and expertise in many facets of the Thoroughbred industry will be a terrific asset to the Board,” said Banke, Breeders' Cup Chairman. “We look forward to his advice and recommendations in supporting and enhancing the World Championships and the safety and integrity of our sport.”

Previous Director Gavin Murphy's four-year term ends in 2022.

“We extend our sincere gratitude to Gavin Murphy for his outstanding dedication and service to our Board and to the Breeders' Cup during his term,” said Banke. “Known for his creativity and innovative style, Gavin's insight and expertise were particularly impactful with respect to long-term strategy, the formation and passage of HISA, and especially as the Breeders' Cup encountered unprecedented challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. We genuinely appreciate the value he has added to the Breeders' Cup and the industry as a whole.”

Frankel’s Onesto Swoops In The Grand Prix De Paris

Unleashing his deadly acceleration to maximum effect at a ParisLongchamp blessed by evening sun, TDN Rising Star Onesto (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) stormed into the big time in Thursday's G1 Grand Prix de Paris. This type of performance had looked on the cards after his scintillating win in the 10 1/2-furlong G2 Prix Greffulhe at Saint-Cloud May 8 and highly commendable effort from a horror draw when dead-heating for fifth in the Prix du Jockey-Club and the Fabrice Chappet-trained chestnut was duly made the 10-3 favourite. Anchored last early by Stephane Pasquier having run freely to post, the first group 1 winner for his breeder Diamond Creek Farm who sported the colours of Gerard Augustin-Normand for the first time proved perfectly tractable in the race and saved energy tracking the other five. Producing the burst once straightened for home that is already his trademark over a 12-furlong trip that was certain to play to his strengths, he produced a 11.09 penultimate sectional to overhaul the long-time leader Simca Mille (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}) a furlong from home. That rallying rival kept the winning margin to a neck only, with the Prix du Jockey-Club runner-up El Bodegon (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) adding context 2 1/2 lengths back in third.

Since the move of the Prix du Jockey-Club to 10 1/2 furlongs, the draw has become vital with the last winner to have come from a double-figure stall being one of the Chantilly Classic's better ones in the talented New Bay (GB) in 2015. Onesto had fared reasonably well in the original draw in nine, but after the well-documented error he was re-posted to 14 and lost all chance at the start. Still able to get within a respectable distance of the impressive winner Vadeni (Fr) (Churchill {Ire}), he emerged from the race as one of a few who could be upgraded significantly. This trip looked truly up his street, hailing from the family of Juddmonte's great blue hen Hasili (Ire) by the stamina influence Frankel, whose 25th group 1 winner he duly became. He was also able to mark the win with the added bonus of supplying Sea The Stars (Ire) with his first group 1 winner as a broodmare sire. It capped a memorable week for the breeders, who had supplied the Fasig-Tipton July Sale-topping Curlin colt.

“He can be slightly too keen and Stephane did well to rate him,” Chappet said. “In the race, he was slightly too cold but when he made his move between horses two out he was right there to produce his turn of foot. In fact it turned out to be the perfect race for him. He ran a great race in the Prix du Jockey Club, but he was out if it turning for home because of his bad draw. You can have regrets because there is only one Derby in the life of a horse, but take nothing away from the winner–I am not saying we would have won.”

Onesto's winning debut over a mile at Chantilly in September had enough x-factor to earn TDN Rising Star status, containing the colt Vagalame (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) who would come to share fifth place with him when they re-engaged in the Jockey Club. Finding only Welwal (GB) (Shalaa {Ire}) too strong on his other juvenile start in a 7 1/2-furlong conditions event on Deauville's Polytrack in October, he was again behind that rival when eighth as Vadeni was fifth in this track's G3 Prix de Fontainebleau at a mile Apr. 17. It was only when he got to the Greffulhe that he hit his stride and Chappet has the big one back over this course and distance in mind now. “He's got plenty of speed, he can win 10-furlong races and he won a mile maiden but now the future is to target the Arc and we will go with some ambition,” he added. “This was a good trial, wasn't it? He will first go for the [G2] Prix Niel.”

Of Simca Mille, trainer Stephane Wattel said, “He ran a huge race and it was a great performance, so we have to be proud and he doesn't stop improving. We will see how he comes out of it–the [G2] Grand Prix de Deauville at home could be a possibility.”

Onesto is the second of five foals and first runner out of the unraced Onshore (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), who was purchased by the aforementioned Diamond Creek Farm for 320,000gns at the 2016 Tattersalls December Mares Sale. She is a half-sister to the G3 Easter Cup winner Jet Away (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}), while their dam is another who failed to get to the track in Kalima (GB) (Kahyasi {Ire}).

Kalima's full-sibling Hasili needs no introduction as Juddmonte's legendary broodmare and there was already proof that Frankel works well in this dynasty. So far, he is responsible for the G1 Metropolitan winner Mirage Dancer (GB), a son of Hasili's GI Matriarch S.-winning Heat Haze (GB) (Green Desert), the G2 Prix de Sandringham scorer Obligate (GB) and useful stayer Weekender (GB) who boast Hasili as a second dam. Kalima's half-sister Skiable (Ire) (Niniski) is the second dam of Frankel's G1 Fillies' Mile heroine and 1000 Guineas-placed Quadrilateral (GB). The dam's 2-year-old filly is by Australia (GB), she has a yearling filly by Gleneagles (Ire) and a filly foal by American Pharoah.
