The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority's Board of Directors has elected Dr. Noah Cohen, VMD, MPH, PhD, DACVIM-LA, to fulfill the remainder of Dr. Paul Lunn's term on the Racetrack Safety Standing Committee following Dr. Lunn's return to England.

Dr. Cohen is a University Distinguished Professor and the Patsy Link Chair in Equine Research at Texas A&M University's College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. Dr. Cohen has dedicated his entire career to equine health and safety, serving as an equine veterinary practitioner before entering academia. Among his many accomplishments, he served on five editorial boards, mentored numerous trainees, and contributed to several hundred scholarly research publications. Dr. Cohen has received numerous national and international awards for his contributions to equine health.

“We are honored to have someone with as distinguished a career in equine health and safety as Dr. Cohen join HISA's Racetrack Safety Committee,” said HISA CEO Lisa Lazarus. “His deep expertise and decades of experience will be critical to HISA's efforts to make racing safer with data- and research-backed solutions. As we turn our sights toward implementing the program in just a few short months, Dr. Cohen's depth of knowledge will be instrumental in HISA's success and ongoing efforts to evolve rules and regulations.”

“We thank Dr. Lunn for his time and significant contributions to the committee, including the vital role he played in the process of drafting the rules and national accreditation standards that make up the Racetrack Safety Program which were approved by the Federal Trade Commission just last week,” said Dr. Sue Stover, HISA Racetrack Safety Committee Chair. “I look forward to working with Dr. Cohen and know our program will benefit from his insights gleaned from decades in the field.”

Thoroughbred Makeover Diary: The Start of Something Special With Finnick the Fierce

The day before Thanksgiving my cell phone started blowing up with messages from my group chat. This wasn’t out of the ordinary because me and my three closest friends tend to text all day long. I was just sneaking off to the bathroom of my parents’ house in North Carolina to take a break from the high emotional climate caused by a recent car accident they had no business walking away from.

Lone Star Announces EHV-1 Measures

Officials at Lone Star Park have announced that horses stabled at Fonner Park in Nebraska and Parx Racing, each of which is being impacted by EHV-1 positives, will not be allowed to participate at the Dallas-area oval until further notice.

Additionally, the track is continuing to require that all horses admitted to the stable area have a current (i.e. within 90 days) FDA-approved EHV-1 vaccine or booster. Vaccine information must be noted on the certificate for admittance.

Horsepeople are encouraged to contact the Lone Star racing office for further information.

EHV-1: Lone Star Park Restricts Shippers From Fonner, Parx

It is Lone Star Park's policy that horses that have been stabled at Fonner Park in Nebraska or Parx Racing in Pennsylvania will not be allowed to participate at Lone Star Park until further notice.

Furthermore, we also continue to require that all horses admitted to the Lone Star Park stable area have a current (within 90 days) FDA approved EHV-1 vaccine or EHV-1 booster.

Vaccine information must be noted on the health certificate for admittance to Lone Star Park.

While we understand this is an inconvenience for horsemen, we are simply doing all we can as an industry to prevent the spread of the highly contagious EHV-1 virus, while doing what we believe to be the best management practices for such prevention.

Any and all horsemen shipping horses to Lone Star Park are strongly urged to contact the Lone Star Park racing office for further information.
