David Elsworth Retires From Training

David Elsworth, one of the greatest dual-purpose trainers of all time, has announced that he will not renew his licence next year, and thus retires after more than six decades in the sport. The news was first reported by Racing Post.

Elsworth's name will forever be entwined with two of the most beloved horses of the modern era, the legendary steeplechaser Desert Orchid (GB) and the hugely popular stayer Persian Punch (Ire), and in his handling of these two durable stars Elsworth demonstrated both his innate horsemanship and versatility as a trainer.

“If you go to a party, there is a time to go home,” said Elsworth on Wednesday. “I'm not upset or downhearted about anything. It is just time to move on. I've had a great time.”

The trainer, who turned 82 earlier this week, was last month awarded the Cartier Award of Merit, marking an extraordinarily successful career which began with him riding over jumps between 1957 and 1972 before taking out his licence to train in 1978.

Among the top-class horses to have emanated from his stable was In The Groove (GB), who won the Irish G1 1000 Guineas in 1990, making Elsworth one of the few trainers to have trained a Classic winner as well as a Grand National winner. In The Groove also won the G1 Juddmonte International S. and beat Linamix (Fr) in the G1 Champion S. during her high-flying 3-year-old season, as well as returning at four to win the G1 Coronation Cup.

While the great grey 'Dessie' will always rank as Elsworth's greatest jumping star, with his emotional victory in the Cheltenham Gold Cup as well as four King George VI Chase victories and an Irish Grand National triumph, the Grand National was secured with Rhyme 'N Reason (GB) in 1988, while Barnbrook Again (GB) landed back-to-back runnings of the Queen Mother Champion Chase in the following two seasons.

“I've progressed over the years and we have had a degree of success, for which I feel very fortunate, and we have been associated with some good horses,” he said with some understatement.

“It creeps up on you. You are just doing your job and doing what you enjoy and when you win, it's good. I've been very grateful and lucky. I feel very fortunate to have been doing this for a long time.”

An early star who exemplified Elsworth's range of skills was Heighlin (GB), who won Cheltenham's Triumph Hurdle and the Ascot S. at Royal Ascot in 1980 before also landing the Goodwood Cup two years later.

Following Elsworth's move from his long tenure at Whitsbury in Hampshire to Newmarket's Egerton House Stables in 2006, the biggest name to emerge from his yard was Arabian Queen (Ire), who defeated Derby winner Golden Horn (GB) in the 2015 Juddmonte International for owner/breeder Jeff Smith, a long-term friend and patron of the trainer. Smith's colours were also carried by the 20-time winner Persian Punch, whose major victories included two Goodwood Cups and the Doncaster Cup.

Elsworth's most recent group-race success came with Sir Dancealot (Ire), whose four Group 2 wins included the Park S. and Lennox S. of 2019, the year in which the trainer also sent out Dandhu (Ire) to win the G3 Fred Darling S.

Paying tribute to his staff, who have included Godolphin Stud and Stable Staff Employee of the Year Peter Maughan, his former long-time head lad Rodney Boult, and former assistants Jeannie Brown and Paul Holley (who also rode for him over jumps for many years, including guiding Oh So Risky (GB) to victory in the 1991 Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival), he said, “If you are a footballer, you need to be on a good team and racing is a team effort as well. I was surrounded by lots of people who were with me and they shared the ambitions and the hopes, and the success we had. I may have been at the helm, but you don't get to be a successful racehorse trainer unless you are surrounded by good horses and good people. I have had them in abundance over the years and I have been very lucky.”

He added, “I feel I've been a very, very lucky man that I've been doing a job all my life and it has not been a job. It's a sport really, and I have been a participant in various ways.”

American Eventing Championships Return To Kentucky Horse Park For 2023, 2024

The United States Eventing Association (USEA) Board of Governors have voted to enter into contract negotiations with Equestrian Events Inc. (EEI) and Mary Fike to host the 2023 and 2024 USEA American Eventing Championships (AEC) at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky.

The USEA sent out a request for expressions of interest in June 2021 to host the AEC in 2023 and 2024. Several venues presented attractive proposals, and from those the USEA Board of Governors voted to select the Kentucky Horse Park as the 2023 and 2024 host site pending contract negotiations. The USEA has begun negotiating final terms with the organizing group of EEI and Mary Fike for the 2023 and 2024 AEC and hopes to complete that process within the next few months.

The 2022 AEC will be held at Rebecca Farm in Kalispell, Montana from Aug. 30 – Sept. 4, 2022. The proposed date for the 2023 AEC in Kentucky is Aug. 29 – Sept. 3, 2023, followed by the 2024 AEC from Aug. 27 – Sept. 1, 2024.

“EEI and Mary Fike are excited to partner with the USEA and welcome the AEC back to Kentucky in 2023 and 2024. The Kentucky Horse Park is a special place and hosting the AEC at this iconic venue creates memories that will last a lifetime. We are beyond thrilled to host this championship and the amazing competitors who will attend,” said EEI Executive Director Lee Carter.

Among the interested venues for the 2023 and 2024 AEC, there was a strong bid from Stable View in Aiken, South Carolina. Ultimately, the Board made it clear through its deliberations that the popularity of the Kentucky Horse Park and their trust in the management team of EEI and Mary Fike were central to their decision. EEI and Mary Fike first organized the AEC at the Kentucky Horse Park in 2019, which recorded 925 starters making it the largest event in North American history. Due to COVID-19, the 2020 AEC was canceled but the event returned to the Kentucky Horse Park in 2021. The 2021 AEC garnered over 1,200 entries and ran 939 starters, which broke the 2019 record as the largest event in North American history.

“We are truly elated for the AEC to return to the Kentucky Horse Park,” said USEA CEO Rob Burk. “Our partners at EEI and Mary Fike have developed a strong working connection with our staff over the previous three years. The USEA Board of Governors had a difficult decision to make and I want to thank all of our bidders including Barry Olliff, Molly Bull, and the entire team from Stable View. We received an overwhelming amount of feedback from the membership about their desire to return the AEC to Kentucky, and we are happy to deliver this news to the USEA members.”

The Kentucky Horse Park maintains 600 acres of cross-country courses, 1,200 permanent stalls with accessibility to additional temporary stalls, and world-class arenas including the iconic Rolex Stadium. The Kentucky Horse Park was home to the 2010 World Equestrian Games and hosts the Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event every year in April, which is also organized by EEI.

Jockey Of The Week: Arnaldo Bocachica Dominates Charles Town Standings For Fourth Year In A Row

With the Hollywood Casino at Charles Town 2021 meet quickly coming to a close, Arnaldo Bocachica has again run away with the leading jockey title. Last week he added eight wins to his already lofty total to earn the title of Jockey of the Week for Dec. 6 through Dec. 12. The honor, which is voted on by a panel of racing experts, is for jockeys who are members of the Jockeys' Guild, the organization which represents more than 1050 active, retired and permanently disabled jockeys in the United States.

The hard-working, personable Bocachica, known as “Boca” at the track, has led the jockey standings at Charles Town in wins and purse earnings for the last three years and is poised to make it four years in a row with 252 wins, 150 more than his closest competitor and nearly $5 million in purse earnings through Dec. 12. His winning percentage is a lofty 35 percent. The Charles Town meet closes this Saturday, Dec. 18.

Riding since 2006, the 33-year-old native of Puerto Rico has made Charles Town his home track riding first call for leading trainer Jeff Ronco as well as other top trainers at the track. The Ronco/Bocachica pair post a 37 percent win rate, and Bocachica won career race 2,000 on March 6, 2021 for Jeff Ronco.

Bocachica began the week on Wednesday by winning two races for Jeff Ronco and one for trainer Anthony Farrior. With no wins on Thursday, Bocachica won three on Friday, one for Ronco and two for Farrior. He continued his winning ways on Saturday with a win for trainer Victor Espinosa and one for Farrior.

Bocachica's weekly statistics included eight wins from 15 starts for 53.3 percent winners and 80 percent in-the-money finishers with total purse earnings of $127,060.

Other nominees for Jockey of the Week were Dylan Davis who won the Garland of Roses at Aqueduct, Mario Gutierrez who pulled the upset win in the G2 Los Alamitos Futurity, Colby J. Hernandez who won the Champions Day Classic at Fair Grounds and Luis Saez who won the G3 Mr. Prospector at Gulfstream Park.
