Top Three From Bumpy La Jolla Reconvene in Del Mar Derby

The first three across the wire in a rough-and-tumble renewal of Del Mar's GIII La Jolla H. which resulted in a disqualification will have another go at each other in a full-gate 14-horse renewal of the GII Del Mar Derby Saturday at the seaside oval.

A nose in front at the line in the La Jolla was Yuesheng Zhang's Sword Zorro (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}), but his errant path was guaranteed to cost him and he ended up placed third. Prior to that, the bay captured the Singletary S. Apr. 25 at Santa Anita and was second in the Cinema S. there May 23. Elevated into the victory was Red Barons Barn and Rancho Temescal's Zoffarelli (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}), who was making his North American debut after winning just one of seven starts–albeit with five seconds–in Great Britain. Bumped up from third to second was rail-drawn Hudson Ridge (American Pharoah). Breaking his maiden in the Cinema, he had repeated in an Arcadia allowance/optional claimer June 18 before being bounced around and cost a chance at the victory as the 17-10 favorite in the La Jolla.

The top four horses from a blanket finish in the local Oceanside S. return here as well. Flashiest (Mizzen Mast) rallied from last to first to get up by a head at 12-1, continuing an ascent from starting his career against $30,000 maiden optional claimers at Turf Paradise, but the gelding was rank early and retreated to last when shipped across the country for a try in the GI Saratoga Derby Invitational S. last out. Hronis Racing's Crew Dragon (Exaggerator) was runner-up in the Columbia S. earlier this year for Bill Mott and followed up his second in the Oceanside with a local allowance/optional claiming score Aug. 12. Third was 39-1 longshot No Foolery Here (Carpe Diem), making his first start against winners after breaking his maiden on the Santa Anita turf May 29, while Hockey Dad (Nyquist), second to Crew Dragon Aug. 12, filled the superfecta, beaten just a half-length.

Returning Constitution Colt Meets Brown Pair in Saranac

Impressive through his first two races before disappointing in his third try, Repole Stable's Never Surprised (Constitution) will return off a seven-plus month layoff to face a formidable pair of Chad Brown rivals and three other challengers in Saturday's GIII Saranac S. at Saratoga.

Debuting over six furlongs on the Aqueduct grass last November, Never Surprise stalked the pace, pounced at the quarter pole and drew clear in the lane for a 3 1/2-length success, earning a strong 89 Beyer. He bettered that number by one point when going wire to wire making his two-turn bow in the Central Park S. there 20 days later, besting future stakes winners Scarlett Sky (Sky Mesa) and Hard Love (Kitten's Joy). Wrangled back off the pace as a 3-10 favorite in the GIII Kitten's Joy S. Jan. 30 at Gulfstream, he settled for second, recording just a 69 Beyer.

Leading the Brown duo is Klaravich Stables' Public Sector (GB) (Kingman {GB}). Breaking his maiden impressively on debut over this course last summer, he was second when attempting to close into a dawdling pace set by next-out GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf upsetter Fire At Will (Declaration of War) as an odds-on favorite in the GII Pilgrim S. Just missing by a head when again hindered by a slow tempo in the Manila S. two back July 4 at Belmont, the bay picked up his first stakes success when annexing the GII Hall of Fame S. going a mile here Aug. 6. He's flanked by barnmate Founder (Upstart). Bought for $600,000 at OBS March, the ridgling scored at first asking sprinting on the local dirt last August, but failed to connect in his next five outings before rallying from last to first to capture the Tale of the Cat S. last out on the Monmouth turf July 31.

Tough to Get Past War Like Goddess in Flower Bowl

She keeps getting better, and Saturday, George Krikorian's War Like Goddess (English Channel) will get her first chance at a Grade I victory as a likely overwhelming favorite in the 1 3/8-mile GI Flower Bowl S., which will be run at Saratoga for the first time after a 43-year run at Belmont.

Bought for just $30,000 at OBS June in 2019, the bay debuted going nine furlongs on the Churchill turf last September at Churchill and rallied from second-last to take over late, and she validated that explosive late rally with a last-to-first success going this distance there next out. Given some time off, she suffered her only career defeat thus far when running fifth after being marooned behind a slow pace in the GIII The Very One S. Feb. 27 at Gulfstream, but bounced back with a powerful finish to get up by a nose in the GIII Orchid S. a month later in Hallandale. Keeping it rolling with an explosive 3 3/4-length triumph over 12 panels in the GIII Bewitch S. Apr. 23 at Keeneland, she got another brief break before returning with a devastating 3 1/4-length victory in the local GIII Glens Falls S. Aug. 7.

“It's all a test, right? These are tough horses but the goal is to try and win a Grade I with her,” trainer Bill Mott, looking to win his fifth Flower Bowl, told the NYRA notes team. “She's done quite well and handled every step so far, so we hope she move another step forward and accomplish this.”

The victor of a record six Flower Bowls, including a remarkable five of the past seven runnings, Chad Brown starts a pair here. My Sister Nat (Fr) (Acclamation {GB}) could not run with the favorite when second in the Glens Falls, but just missed by a head in this race last year, while Great Island (Scat Daddy) continues to improve, picking up her first graded stakes tally in the GIII WinStar Matchmaker S. last out July 17 at Monmouth.

Adding some international intrigue is Jean-Claude Rouget's American Bridge (GB) (Kodiac {GB}). The Peter Brant colorbearer most recently shipped out of France for the first time in her career and was rewarded with her initial group stakes score in the G3 Premio Del Giubileo at San Siro in Italy June 27.

Letter to the Editor: Susie Hart

Thank you for publishing all of those comments on Covid protocols at the upcoming sales. Something that I think is worth mentioning that no one spoke about is the role that veterinarians play and the risk they take going into stalls to perform endoscopic and physical exams. Often vets are shoulder-to-shoulder with people they don't know and have no idea if they are vaccinated or even if they are sick. The use of videoscopes has greatly reduced contact, but vets are still in very close proximity with sales help and this is a bit frightening to me. Also, it's almost impossible for vets to wear masks in the stalls because it's hard to use the endoscope. Most people handling the horses in the stalls do not have masks on. I understand not wearing them outside, but it is another concern.

The other thing that only one consignor mentioned is the fact that so often when we go to vet a horse, someone walks up and hands me a pen and card to sign with the name of the vet and client. I don't want to be rude but I don't want to be touching anything or expose myself and it's often awkward. Especially later in the sales when a lot of horses do not have videoscopes and often the consignors aren't even at the barn, we are approached by people who don't understand when I try to explain I don't want to sign their card. I'm glad Keeneland is taking extra steps this year. Good luck to buyers and sellers at the sales!
