Jaipur Rematch in Saratoga’s Troy

Casa Creed (Jimmy Creed) looks for his third straight win since turning back to grass sprints in Friday's loaded GIII Troy S. going 5 1/2 furlongs at Saratoga.

The 2019 GII National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame S. winner followed a sixth-place finish in the GI Frank E. Kilroe Mile S. Mar. 6 with wins in Belmont's seven-furlong Elusive Quality S. Apr. 24 and the six-furlong GI Jackpocket Jaipur S. last time June 5. The re-opposing Chewing Gum (Candy Ride {Arg}) completed the exacta that day at 28-1 while the speedy and favored Bound for Nowhere (The Factor) tired to third.

“We backed him up to six furlongs and that was okay, five and a half is a bit of a different race on a different type of course,” Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott said of Casa Creed. “It's a tighter course here, so we'll have to see how he negotiates that.”

Imprimis (Broken Vow), disqualified from first and placed third for interference in this race last year, exited a narrow win in Gulfstream's Janus S. Jan. 1 with consecutive second-place finishes in Tampa's Turf Dash S. Feb. 24 and Keeneland's GII Shakertown S. Apr. 3. He was beaten a nose by the aforementioned classy 7-year-old Bound for Nowhere in the latter.

“He's a very good fresh horse,” trainer Joe Orseno said of the 3-1 morning-line favorite. “When he came out of the gate in the Shakertown, he broke a bone in his nose. We took precautions over it, but he's been fine and ready to run. The Troy has been on our radar since that race. I was thinking about the Jaipur and decided to skip it, but he's ready to go.”

Public Sector the One to Beat in HOF

Public Sector (GB) (Kingman {GB}), no worse than second in three attempts this season, has been installed as the 2-1 morning-line favorite in Friday's GII National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame S. at Saratoga.

An impressive debut winner over the Saratoga lawn last summer, the GII Pilgrim S. runner-up followed a win in a Belmont optional claimer June 4 with a rallying second-place finish after soft fractions–beaten just a head–to wire-to-wire winner Original (Quality Road) in the Manila S. July 4.

Public Sector's trainer Chad Brown won this race four straight times between 2015-18 with Takeover Target, Camelot Kitten, Bricks and Mortar and Raging Bull (Fr), respectively.

Wolfie's Dynaghost (Ghostzapper), a half-brother to millionaire Grade I-winning turfer Sadler's Joy (Kitten's Joy), makes his grass debut here. He enters off a win over next-out Tale of the Cat S. winner Founder (Upstart) in a washed-off optional claimer in the slop at Belmont July 3. “He has a lot of turf pedigree to him and if he's anything like his half-brother, we're optimistic that he'll run well,” trainer Tom Albertrani said.

The rail-drawn and stretch-running 'TDN Rising Star' Annex (Constitution), an eye-catching winner of his first three races, including a pair of Gulfstream stakes, figures to finally get much more pace to run at here following a trio of disappointing efforts. He was a flat fifth in the Manila last time.

Rural Vet Crisis: Minnesota Vet Seeks To Give Away Clinic, Truck

Dr. Robert Bogan, 74, is sweetening the pot for any veterinarian who might consider working in rural Faribault County, MN, when he retires. He's giving away his practice, his clinic (equipment included) and his truck.

The 220-square mile county has 14,000 people and just one veterinarian — Bogan, who has been trying to retire for years. Bogan and a group of community leaders have been working together to try to find another veterinarian to care for the animals, which include everything from cattle and horses to dogs and cats.

[Story Continues Below]

In addition to Bogan's practice, Faribault County is trying to make the job even bette. The county is enrolled in a federal program that forgives up to $150,000 in student loans for vets who work in the county for six years.

Still, not one person has come forward to take the deal. The issue facing Faribault County is not unusual, as large portions of rural United States are in a veterinary shortage. More lucrative clinics in urban and suburban areas with regular shifts and no emergency duty are a siren song to many graduating vets, many of whom don't want to launch their own small business right away.

Having no veterinarian in the county during emergencies, like a cow in distress during calving, can hurt the bottom line for farmers in the area whose livelihood depends on their animals. Currently, the county is hopeful that Leyton Becker, who has recently finished his first year of vet school at the University of Minnesota, will come home to help. Becker is currently interning with Bogan.

Becker is from the area and was raised on a hog farm, so he understands the pressures of the job and what it entails. When Becker graduates, Bogan will be 77.
