Malathaat Tops Short Field in CCA Oaks

Undefeated divisional leader Malathaat (Curlin) headlines a four-horse renewal of Saratoga's prestigious GI Coaching Club American Oaks Saturday. A perfect five-for-five, the 'TDN Rising Star' kicked off 2021 with a gutsy score in the GI Central Bank Ashland S. at Keeneland Apr. 3 and rallied to victory in the GI Longines Kentucky Oaks last out Apr. 30, defeating next-out GI Acorn S. heroine Search Results (Flatter) by a hard-fought neck.

“She's a very gifted filly,” trainer Todd Pletcher said. “She's just been perfect so far and she's a pleasure to train, and just does everything right. When you have one that's undefeated, you just want to keep that intact and hope that everything goes smoothly and that she's able to show her capabilities once more.”

The second choice is another daughter of Curlin in Stonestreet homebred Clairiere. Winner of the GII Rachel Alexandra S. Feb. 13, the bay was second in the GII Fair Grounds Oaks Mar. 20 and was an even fourth behind Malathaat after stumbling at the break in the Run for the Lilies. She was last seen finishing third to Malathaat's stablemate Zaajel (Street Sense) in Belmont's GII Mother Goose S. June 26.

Rounding out the field is Maracuja (Honor Code), second to Search Results in the GIII Gazelle S. in April and a longshot seventh in the Oaks last out; and Rockpaperscissors (Distorted Humor), who exits a 9 3/4-length allowance score in an off-the-turf event at Indiana June 21.

Sore Back? Skip The Bute

Horse owners have been known to take medications prescribed to the animals in their care, despite the possible dangers. While some anti-inflammatories, antibiotics, and dewormers may be the same in both human and equine medicine, but their formulations can be vastly different; because of this, human ingestion of equine drugs isn't recommended.

An American woman experiencing severe back pain attempted to take some phenylbutazone (Bute) that had been prescribed for one of the horses in her care. She took three doses of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), each suitable for a 400-pound horse, reports the journal Clinics and Practice.

[Story Continues Below]

Three days later, the woman went to the hospital complaining of nausea, vomiting and weakness, which she said she had been experiencing for two weeks. She often had back pain that was controlled by use of over-the-counter naproxen, but reported that this episode was exceptionally painful, which is why she ingested the Bute.

She presented to the hospital with nearly low blood pressure, a high heart rate, and normal O2 levels, as well as dry mucous membranes. Blood work showed a low white blood count, low platelet levels, elevated liver enzymes, and acute kidney injury. Her urine blood screen showed use of amphetamines and marijuana.

Poison control and toxicology were engaged once it was discovered she had ingested the Bute, but no antidote was recommended. She was given an N-acetyl cysteine and sodium bicarbonate drip because of the suspected acute liver damage caused by the phenylbutazone.

After three days of in-hospital treatment, the woman was feeling better and checked herself out.

Though phenylbutazone was used in human medicine for the treatment of multiple forms of arthritis, it was removed from the human medicinal arsenal in 1970 because of an increased risk of agranulocytosis, a life-threatening blood disorder.

Eye Infection Knocks Pinatubo Off Shuttle Duty

Champion 2-year-old Pinatubo (Ire) (Shamardal) will not travel to Darley Australia for the Southern Hemisphere breeding season as planned on account of a viral eye infection.

“It's extremely disappointing for our clients and the team at Darley, however, we must first and foremost consider what is best for the horse and the overwhelming conclusion, and based on vets' advice, was for Pinatubo to remain at Dalham Hall Stud where they're able to manage his treatment and get him right for next season,” said Godolphin Australia's Managing Director Vin Cox. “We thank our clients for their support of this horse since his announcement. The legacy Shamardal is leaving through the likes of proven sire sons such as Lope de Vega is incredible and we're fortunate to be able to offer two sons who, like Pinatubo, were champion racehorses in their own right, on our roster this season in Blue Point and Earthlight. Just because Pinatubo is unable to make the journey this season certainly doesn't rule him out for next season and we look forward to him joining our roster in 2022.”

Pinatubo, winner of the G1 National S., G1 Dewhurst S. and G1 Prix Jean Prat, recently completed his first season at Dalham Hall for a fee of £35,000.
