No Nay Never’s Zain Claudette Gets Up In The Princess Margaret

Entering Saturday's G3 Princess Margaret Keeneland S. off an impressive maiden win over this six-furlong trip at Newmarket June 25, Saeed Al Tayer's Zain Claudette (Ire) (No Nay Never) was produced in the nick of time by the young weighing room talent Ray Dawson to nose out Desert Dreamer (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) in a brief rainstorm at Ascot. Held up towards the rear early racing alongside the eventual runner-up, the 15-2 shot came stand's side of the pack while that 9-4 favourite was taken far side in what amounted to a pincer movement. While it looked as if the G2 Duchess of Cambridge S. runner-up had done enough to shed her bridesmaid status as she mastered Delmona (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}) late, it was Zain Claudette who came out of eyesight to put her nose down marginally ahead for the photo. “She's a lovely filly and is doing very well,” trainer Ismail Mohammed said. “With each of her runs, she is improving. We're planning to go for some big races with her now.”

Zain Claudette, a bargain £20,000 Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale graduate who was a neck runner-up on debut to the subsequent G2 Prix Robert Papin third Hellomydarlin (Ire) (Galileo Gold {GB}) at Goodwood June 11, is the first foal out of the unraced Claudette (Speightstown). Her dam Tippity Witch (Affirmed) annexed the GIII Martha Washington S. and is kin to the triple Listed Abergwaun S.-winning sprinter Senor Benny (Benny the Dip). A granddaughter of the listed scorer and GII Diana H.-placed Senora Tippy (El Gran Senor), Claudette's second foal is an as yet unnmaed yearling filly by Exceed and Excel (Aus).

Second Chances: James Aloysius

In this continuing series, TDN's Senior Editor Steve Sherack catches up with the connections of promising maidens to keep on your radar.

It was a tale of two trips with James Aloysius (c, 2, More Than Ready–Olorda {Ger}, by Lord of England {Ger}) having to settle for an educational second on debut behind the well-meant firster Portfolio Company (Kitten's Joy) going 1 1/16 miles over the Saratoga lawn on opening weekend (video).

Off at 4-1, the rail-drawn dark bay brushed with a rival just after the start, and, after slightly tapping on the brakes in some early traffic passing the stands for the first time, settled in sixth beneath Luis Saez as the aforementioned favorite stalked in second behind easy fractions of :25.15 and :50.86 over the “good” going.

James Aloysius began to launch a flashy, three-wide blitz on the far turn as the Chad Brown-trained Portfolio Company enjoyed first run and hit the front at the top of the stretch. James Aloysius continued to rally nicely in the lane despite repeatedly getting in and cut the final margin to 3/4 of a length. He earned a 71 Beyer Speed Figure for the effort.

“He's a nice colt, just a little green,” trainer Danny Gargan said. “I'm not really a first-time starter kind of person. We told the jock to break and get a good position and just make sure that he's running turning for home. Luis said if he had hit him left-handed instead of right-handed, he would've won the race. He just shied from it, and got on top of those other horses for a minute. He's a pretty talented colt.”

He continued, “Chad told me probably six weeks before the race that the Kitten's Joy was a nice horse and that he thinks he's gonna be a really good horse. He's really high on him. So, hopefully we'll be around somewhere in the fall.”

Bred in Kentucky by Martin Schwartz, James Aloysius is the first foal out of Olorda, a two-time Grade III winner in the U.S. and a Group 3 winner in France. She was also third in the 2015 G1 Pour Moi Coolmore Prix Saint-Alary. James Aloysius brought $200,000 from Oracle Bloodstock, agent, on behalf of West Paces Racing LLC at last year's Keeneland September sale.

“He's named after the owner [Larry Connolly]'s brother who passed away and another friend of theirs,” Gargan said. “One of them was named James and the other's last name was Aloysius.”

As for what's next for the equine James Aloysius, Gargan said, “I don't run back fast–I run every seven-eight weeks. We're probably gonna aim to get a race into him towards the end of the meet. Hopefully, if everything goes as planned, that's what we're shooting for.”

Gargan concluded, “We like him a lot. I'm pretty lucky this year. We have a little better stock than we normally do baby wise, so that's exciting.”

Lope de Vega’s New Science Gets Up at Ascot

Godolphin's €260,000 Arqana Select yearling New Science (GB) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) backed up a May 28 debut success going a shade over seven furlongs at Great Yarmouth with a seventh-of-10 effort when contesting a stellar renewal of Royal Ascot's June 19 Listed Chesham S. last time. He was sent postward with crowd support for Saturday's Listed Pat Eddery S. tackling the Berkshire venue's same seven-furlong strip and delivered a game display to register a career high. Steadied to settle off the pace in fifth until taking closer order approaching the quarter-mile marker, the 2-1 pick was shaken up for his bid with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining and kept on strongly under continued rousting to subdue Angel Bleu (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}) by a length nearing the line.

“He pleased us the first day at [Great] Yarmouth, which turned out to be a half-decent race, and then he just didn't handle the ground at Royal Ascot,” said assistant trainer Alex Merriam of the Sept. 12 G1 Goffs Vincent O'Brien National S. entry. “William [Buick] knew he wasn't handling it on the way to the start [last time] and we've just written that one off. He jumped nicely here, he travelled well and that was very pleasing. We'll be looking to step him up in grade now and something like the [G3] Solario [at Sandown] could be a possibility. His pedigree screams a mile and it's a staying pedigree, but we'll stick to seven [furlongs] for the time being.”

New Science is the latest of four foals and one of two scorers produced by G2 Park Hill S. and G3 Lillie Langtry S. placegetter Alta Lilea (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), herself a half-sister to the dual stakes-placed Mistress Quickly (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) and Listed Feilden S. runner-up Fighter Boy (Ire) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}). Descendants of his G2 Prix de l'Opera-winning third dam Mona Stella (Nureyev), herself kin to MG1SW G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches heroine Dancing Maid (Fr) (Lyphard), include G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud-winning sire Special Quest (Fr) (Rainbow Quest).

Illinois Casinos

Illinois is home to riverboat casinos, and there are 9 major casinos in Illinois. Illinois casinos have been limited by the government’s restrictions and are taxed at the highest rate in the nation. Argosy’s Alton Belle Casino was the first riverboat casino in Illinois, opening its doors in 1991. It is located at 1 Front Street in Alton. There are three restaurants available for guests. The casino occupies 23,000 square feet and operates from 9am to 5pm every day. It features a 1,200-passenger yacht and a barge.

Argosy’s Empress Casino is located at 2300 Empress Drive in Joliet. There are 85 rooms and 17 suites available at the casino hotel. The casino operates from 10am to 4am on Friday and from 10am to 4am on Saturday. There are three restaurants on site. The casino occupies 50,000 square feet, and has special features like an 80-space RV park and 2,500-passenger barge.

Casino Queen is located in East Saint Louis at 200 South Front Street. There are 150 rooms and 7 suites available at the casino as well. The casino operates from 9am to 7am daily. It occupies 27,500 square feet and offers many features. Besides gaming, Casino Queen offers a 2,500-passenger paddle wheeler, a 140-space RV park and easy access to MetroLink light-rail station.

These are only three of the nine Illinois casinos. They all offer special features that are worth taking a look at, like paddleboats and barges. Most casinos also offer great dining on site. Illinois casinos offer much more than gambling – they offer a great vacation experience.
