Report: Arlington Employees Receive Layoff Notices

According to a report in Chicago's Daily Herald newspaper, Churchill Downs Incorporated (CDI), the owner of Arlington Park, has sent official notices to employees informing them they will be laid off 14 days after the final day of the meet, which is Sept. 25.

CDI has not committed to racing beyond the end of this meet and has put the track up for sale. The layoff notices are a discouraging development after CDI applied for 2022 Illinois racing dates. A date request is not binding and does not have to mean that CDI intends to keep the track open.

The Daily Herald obtained a copy of a memo sent to employees by Arlington President Tony Petrillo, which read: “As it was announced earlier this year the Arlington Park Racecourse, LLC has been placed on the market for sale which will result in the closure of Arlington International Racecourse. Consistent with these plans, employment separations presently are expected to begin on or about Sept. 25, 2021. The entire Racecourse facility is being permanently closed in conjunction with the expectation of the sale.”

Nick Micaletti, the business agent for Teamsters Local 727, which represents 50 Arlington employees, including valets and the starting gate crew, held out hope someone would come in, buy the track and keep it open for racing.

“It's a reality now, whereas before it was, well, hopefully somebody comes in and buys it and does the right things and helps Illinois horse racing,” Micaletti told the Daily Herald.

Keeneland November to Begin Nov. 10

The Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale will begin on Wednesday, Nov. 10 according to an update from Keeneland President and CEO Shannon Arvin and Vice President of Sales

Tony Lacy Tuesday. Fasig-Tipton's one-day November Sale will be held Nov. 9. The Breeders' Cup will take place at Del Mar Nov. 5 and 6.

“In keeping with Keeneland's mission, we continually strive to do what is best for the industry,” said the statement from Keeneland. “Setting the stage for a successful November Sale is a top priority as we work to deliver the absolute best marketplace to buyers and sellers this Fall. Keeneland's opening session of the 2021 November Sale will be on Wednesday, Nov. 10, following the Breeders' Cup World Championships at Del Mar.”

The Keeneland November entry deadline is Monday, Aug. 2.

Galway ‘Winner’ Disqualified After Wrong Horse Saddled

A mix-up between two fillies trained by Jessica Harrington led to the first past the post in Galway's second race, the Colm Quinn Irish EBF Fillies Maiden, later being disqualified.

The juvenile contest initially appeared to have been won by Kirsten Rausing's debutante Alizarine (GB) (Sea The Moon {Ger}). Following an objection and stewards' enquiry, the filly transpired to be her 3-year-old stable-mate Aurora Princess (Ire) (The Gurkha {Ire}), a dual winner in June who was set to be making her tenth start. She was subsequently withdrawn.

An initial enquiry disqualified the filly under Rule 262(iv)c, with the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board (IHRB) confirming that the “horse could not be positively identified post race”. The short-priced favourite Twinkle (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), trained by Aidan O'Brien, was promoted to first place.

Harrington was set to have seven runners at Galway on Tuesday, including Alizarine, a 2-year-old half-sister to recent listed Glasgow S. winner Aleas (GB) (Archipenko).

Bell’s the One to Beat

Lothenbach Stables Inc.'s Bell's the One (Majesticperfection) takes on six rivals in Wednesday's GII Honorable Miss H. at Saratoga. The Neil Pessin pupil annexed last September's GI Derby City Distaff by a nose before finishing third behind Gamine (Into Mischief) in the GI Breeders' Cup F/M Sprint in November. Second in Keeneland's GI Madison S. Apr. 3, she was fourth in defense of her Derby City title May 1–again behind the nearly unbeatable Gamine and two other next-out graded scorers. The 5-year-old was last seen taking a tougher-than-average renewal of Churchill's Roxelana S. June 19, and prepped for this with a sharp :47 flat bullet breeze over the Arlington all-weather last Tuesday.

“I'm really not scared of any sprint filly in the country right now, to be honest,” Pessin said. “It's just a question of if she runs her race. If she does, she's going to be tough to beat no matter who shows up. I respect them all, but I don't fear any of them. I'm very confident in my filly's abilities.”

While Bell's the One is a perfect four-for-four and a graded winner at this six-furlong trip, she's likely slightly better going longer and as a late runner is somewhat vulnerable to pace dynamics. Among those who figure to show speed are rail-drawn 'TDN Rising Star' Ain't No Elmers (Goldencents), who found her best foam in a Churchill optional claimer June 17; and Honey I'm Good (Shackleford), a neck winner on Monmouth's Regret S. July 3 over a sloppy track.
