BLUEBLOODS APLENTY IN BELMONT MSW
2nd-BEL, $90K, Msw, 3yo/up, 1m, 1:31p.m.
Five of the six horses set to line up in Belmont's second race Saturday are sophomore colts with big pedigrees and/or price tags. Vindictive (Uncle Mo) is the only one of that quintet making his career bow in this test for trainer Todd Pletcher. The $200,000 KEESEP purchase is out of MSW & GSP Exotic Bloom (Montbrook), who is also the dam of MGISW Stopchargingmaria (Tale of the Cat). Winner of the GI Breeders' Cup Distaff for Pletcher, Stopchargingmaria summoned $4.4-million from Mandy Pope's Whisper Hill Farm at the 2018 FTKNOV sale carrying a foal by Tapit. That colt, now named Fifty Chevy, debuts Sunday at Tokyo Racecourse. The deserving morning-line favorite in this affair is Summer Wind homebred Southern Flag (Union Rags), who missed by a neck in his track-and-trip debut May 14. The chestnut is out of a daughter of the farm's matriarch, SW Misty Hour (Miswaki). She is responsible for two more blue-hens in MGSW India (Hennessy), dam of MG1SW Mozu Ascot (Frankel {GB}) and SW 'TDN Rising Star' Kareena (Medaglia d'Oro); and SW Pilfer (Deputy Minister), dam of Grade I winners To Honor and Serve (Bernardini) and Angela Renee (Bernardini), as well as SW & GISP Elnaawi (Street Sense). Chad Brown saddles a pair of expensive colts in $2.1-million KEESEP buy Beatbox (Pioneerof the Nile) and $470,000 KEESEP purchase Miles D (Curlin). Beatbox checked in seventh in his seven-panel unveiling at Keeneland last October and receives Lasix for the first time here. The dark bay is a half to a pair of \fs21f1'TDN Rising Stars' in MGISW Guarana (Ghostzapper) and SW & GSP Magic Dance (More Than Ready). Their second dam is Distaff winner Pleasant Home (Seeking the Gold). Miles D also gets Lasix for the first time here after finishing fourth first out at this oval last October. He is out of an unraced daughter of MGISW My Flag (Easy Goer), dam of champion Storm Flag Flying (Storm Cat). Courtlandt Farms' $800,000 KEESEP acquisition Absolute Courage (Into Mischief) adds blinkers for this third start. Fourth on debut sprinting at Aqueduct Apr. 9, the bay was third last out in a six-furlong event at this oval May 7. TJCIS PPs

Track Superintendent’s Field Day Returns to Indiana Grand

Following a two-year hiatus, the 19th annual Track Superintendent Field Day is set to return Sunday, June 13 at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino. The event kicks off with a reception at the Holiday Inn Express in Shelbyville followed by two days of conference activity at Indiana Grand June 14-15.

Moderated by Nancy Holthus, on-air paddock analyst at Indiana Grand, numerous industry experts will be scattered throughout the two-day event regarding surface and soil sciences, the latest in equipment used to maintain track surfaces, agronomic practices, and other tactical safety measures to assist track superintendents with their day-to-day routines.

“This year, we have over 70 tracks represented at the event,” said the event's founder Roy Smith, Indiana Grand's track superintendent since 2015. “Due to continued travel restrictions, we won't have anyone internationally like we generally do, but we will still have a good representation from tracks across North America.”

Indiana Grand also hosted the 2016 renewal of the event.

Open to the public, several equipment displays will be trackside during live racing June 14-15.

Walsh Seeking Ascot Redemption

Brendan Walsh was assistant trainer to Mark Wallace when Benbaun (Ire) (Stravinsky) finished second, beaten a short head, in the 2006 edition of the G1 King's Stand S. Now a Grade I-winning conditioner in his own right, the Irish-born, Kentucky-based Walsh is looking for his G1 Al Quoz Sprint victor Extravagant Kid (Kiss The Kid) to go one better in next week's King's Stand.

Despite being eight years of age, Extravagant Kid is in the form of his life.

“I think the travel and a different track, when you get to an age like him–an eight-year-old–you are trying to find something a little different,” Walsh said. “They have pretty much seen it all before, and this for him suits his character and it's really picked him up–maybe that's what most of his improvement is accredited to.

“My assistant Charlie Lynch is with him. He says he hasn't missed a beat since he got there, pretty much like he was doing in Dubai. You can't beat that. We've prepared him for it, and it looks like it's all going to plan.”

In addition to his Newmarket stint, Walsh spent time working in Dubai for Godolphin, so traveling horses is nothing new.

“The Dubai thing was in my mind for a couple of years. I travelled a lot of horses with Godolphin back in the day and I thought this was the right year to go with Extravagant Kid,” he said. “He thrived in Dubai when he got there, and he seems to be thriving in Newmarket since he got there. I've got no real hang-ups about it. I think it's as we would want it, and if we get a good trip we will see if he's good enough or not.”

Twirling Candy Colt Outruns His Odds in Churchill Unveiling

4th-Churchill Downs, $100,000, Msw, 6-11, 2yo, 5 1/2f, 1:03.61, ft, 4 1/2 lengths.
CANDY LANDING (c, 2, Twirling Candy–Pearl Bay, by Rush Bay) hinted at some zip with a :35 4/5 (2/21) breeze from the gate here last Thursday, but was let go at 17-1 for a barn that boasts pretty strong debut numbers. Showing speed from a high draw, the homebred dueled outside of 2-1 second timer Woodline (Gun Runner) through an opening quarter in :21.57. He always seemed to be going a bit easier than his rival, was asked for more from James Graham after a :44.57 half and scampered away from there to post a promising 4 1/2-length victory. The winner has a yearling half-sister by Cross Traffic and a foal half-brother by Classic Empire. He hails from the extended female family of Grade I winners Imaginary Lady, J P's Gusto and Proud Spell. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $57,488.
