Laurel Park’s Winter Sprintfest Postponed Until Feb. 20 Due To Winter Storm

Due to a winter storm affecting the Mid-Atlantic region, Saturday's Winter Sprintfest program at Laurel Park featuring the $250,000 Runhappy Barbara Fritchie (G3) and $250,000 General George (G3) has been postponed to Saturday, Feb. 20.

With a winter storm advisory issued through 7 a.m. Sunday and the area receiving a mix of freezing rain, ice and snow, Maryland Jockey Club officials chose to transfer the entire nine-race program out of safety for the horses and horsemen.

The MJC's off-track betting sites will remain open for simulcasting.

In addition to the Barbara Fritchie and General George for older sprinters, the Winter Sprintfest program includes the $100,000 Miracle Wood for 3-year-olds and $100,000 Wide Country for 3-year-old fillies and the $100,000 John B. Campbell for 4-year-olds and up and $100,000 Nellie Morse for older females at about 1 1/16 miles.

There is a nine-race card scheduled for Sunday and a special nine-race Presidents Day holiday program on tap Monday, Feb. 15.

Speightstown Filly Romps to ‘Rising Star’ Honors in Fair Grounds Opener

Carribean Caper (f, 3, Speightstown–Checkupfromzneckup, by Dixie Union) kicked off Saturday's loaded GII Risen Star S. card with a 'TDN Rising Star' performance in the lid lifter at Fair Grounds.

The 3-1 chance broke sharply and forced the issue on the outside from second through an opening quarter in :22.24 over the “good” going. Always traveling like the winner, she poked her head in front approaching the quarter pole, and with a shake or two of the reins from Colby Hernandez, took off in a flash to win going away by a geared-down eight lengths over Famous Attraction (Into Mischief).

The four-time winner and stakes-placed Checkupfromzneckup was purchased by breeder WinStar Farm for $825,000 carrying Carribean Caper in utero at the 2017 KEENOV Sale. Her Into Mischief 2-year-old filly brought $600,000 from Stonestreet Stables as a Keeneland September yearling. She had a filly by Tapit in 2020 and was bred back to Quality Road.

Second dam Unbridled Lassie has a well-beaten third-place finish in the GI Coaching Club American Oaks on her resume.

This is the extended female family of Broodmare of the Year Weekend Surprise, dam of the legendary A.P. Indy and Classic winner Summer Squall. MG1SW and two-time highweight Wolfhound is also on Carribean Caper's page.

NYRA to Reinstitute Fair Hill & Oaklawn Ship & Win Bonuses

The New York Racing Association (NYRA) announced Saturday that it will once again offer “Ship and Win” incentives for horses coming from Fair Hill Training Center or Oaklawn Park to race at Aqueduct or Belmont.

Owners of horses stabled at Fair Hill, in Elkton, Maryland who register an official start during the Aqueduct spring meet (Apr. 1 through Apr. 18), or during the Belmont spring/summer meet (Apr. 22 through July 11), will be credited with an $800 shipping stipend, excluding stakes races. First-time starters must have their three prior works at Fair Hill, and NYRA reserves the right to determine eligibility, with horses needing to demonstrate a pattern of Fair Hill works to qualify.

Horses who made their prior start at Oaklawn before racing at the same NYRA meets will race for a 30% purse bonus in their first qualifying start and will also be eligible for a $1500 stipend (excluding stakes horses). First-time starters shipping from Oaklawn do not qualify for the program.

For more information, contact the NYRA racing office at 718-659-4241.
