Breaking Lucky to Pleasant Acres for 2021

Breaking Lucky (Lookin At Lucky–Shooting Party, by Sky Classic), winner of the 2015 Prince of Wales S. in Canada and a Grade III winner and treble Grade I-placed later in his career, will continue his stud career at Pleasant Acres Stallions in Morriston, Florida, in 2021. He will stand for a fee of $5,000.

Bred in Ontario by Christine Hayden, Breaking Lucky was a solid fifth to Shaman Ghost (Ghostzapper) in the 2015 Queen’s Plate before turning the tables in the second leg of the Canadian Triple Crown at Fort Erie. Winner of the GIII Seagram Cup S. on the Woodbine synthetic in 2016, he hit the board behind Gun Runner in the 2016 GI Clark H., the 2017 GI Stephen Foster H. and 2017 GI Whitney S.

A son of the Grade I-placed Shooting Party, Breaking Lucky is a half-sister to Quake Lake (War Chant), the dam of GI Kentucky Derby hero Country House (Lookin At Lucky) as well as the talented turf distaffer Mitchell Road (English Channel) from the same Smart Strike sire line.

“Our mission has always been to expand Florida’s breeding program by offering exceptional stallion bloodlines,” said Joe Barbazon, owner of Pleasant Acres Stallions. “Bringing Breaking Lucky to Pleasant Acres Stallions is a huge win for all of us in the state. This successful GSW millionaire is the the only son of Lookin at Lucky to be standing in Florida and we are proud to have him at Pleasant Acres Stallions.”

Fasig-Tipton Midlantic December Mixed Catalog Now Online; Still Accepting Entries For Racing-Age Supplement

Fasig-Tipton has cataloged 204 entries for the main catalog of the Midlantic December Mixed Sale, to be held on Tuesday, Dec. 8 at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium, Md. The sale will begin at 11 a.m.

The main catalog consists of broodmares, weanlings, and yearlings.

“As the last mixed sale of the calendar year, Midlantic December annually provides quality buying opportunities for both regional and national breeding and racing operations,” said Midlantic director of sales Paget Bennett. “This year's catalog offers large groups of in-foal mares and weanlings that should be attractive draws to prospective buyers.”

The sale will also offer a horses of racing age supplement for the fourth consecutive year. Fasig-Tipton currently has 50 horses of racing age entered and will continue to accept entries for the supplement through Nov. 13.

“The Horses of Racing Age supplement has become an exciting component of this sale, providing buyers and sellers a proven venue to trade racehorses in our Midlantic-rich racing region,” noted Bennett.

The Midlantic December Mixed catalog may now be viewed online and in the equineline sales catalogue app. Print catalogs will be available by the end of this week. Online bidding and phone bidding will be available.

New Vocations Breeders’ Cup Pledge Raises Over $140,000

The early estimate of funds raised during the Breeders’ Cup Pledge for New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program is over $140,000. A total of 50 Breeders’ Cup contenders pledged a percentage of their World Championships earnings, led by Authentic (Into Mischief)’s win in the GI Longines Classic with the whole partnership group participating, including Spendthrift Farm, Starlight Racing, Madaket, and MyRacehorse, as well as trainer Bob Baffert.

Authentic’s Classic-winning pledge was one of seven winning pledges during the Breeders’ Cup with additional pledges and final donations still being received. The Breeders’ Cup Pledge is in its 11th year with over $790,000 raised to date and 100% of funds going directly to support the program’s rehabilitation, retraining, and rehoming efforts.

“We are truly thrilled with the increased participation for this year’s Pledge,” said Anna Ford, New Vocations Program Director. “All of our other fundraising events had to be cancelled this year, so more than ever, we needed the Pledge to be successful and raise funds. To have seven pledged contenders win was incredible. We are very grateful for the support from all the generous owners and trainers who joined the Pledge. All of the funding raised will go directly to support our program and will allow us to serve the increasing number of horses needing aftercare.”

New Vocations has placed over 7,000 horses since 1992. For more information on the Breeders’ Cup Pledge or about New Vocations, visit www.newvocations.org.

Ladbrokes, Coral Withdraw From On-Track Betting Operations

Both Ladbrokes and Coral, owned by the same parent company in GVC, will withdraw on-track betting operations in Britain and Ireland, according to The Guardian.

In total, GVC owned 85 pitches in the UK and 21 in Ireland; all have been sold to John Hooper (seen on-track as Sid Hooper), which also purchased the 82 pitches of William Hill two years ago.

“The volume of business taken through the racecourse pitches is minuscule compared to the volumes generated in our off-course retail and digital businesses, and we no longer use the operation to hedge into the racecourse betting ring,” said Tom Ritzema, GVC's trading director.

“As the racecourse operation is loss-making and no longer has a strategic purpose, we have regrettably reached the decision to sell our pitches and leave the ring. The current situation with Covid-19, and racing behind closed doors, expedited the decision but was not one of the factors behind it.”
