Favored Frank’s Rockette Continues Dominance In Grade 2 Prioress

Frank's Rockette added to her already-full resume with a win in the Grade 2 Prioress Stakes under Junior Alvarado on Saturday, stalking a hot early pace and drawing away by daylight. The 3-year-old filly trained by Bill Mott was out of the gate quickly and settled in behind pacesetter Hello Beautiful along the backstretch. Reagan's Edge joined those two rivals through the turn, and the three briefly ran abreast before Frank's Rockette kicked clear mid-stretch, reaching a new gear effortlessly to win by 2 1/2 lengths.

Reagan's Edge held on for second and Center Aisle was third. The final time for the six furlongs was 1:08.89.

Frank's Rockette has finished first or second for her entire career, coming to this race off a narrow victory in the G3 Victory Ride. She also has runner-up efforts in the G2 Frizette, G2 Spinaway and G2 Adirondack to her credit for owner/breeder Frank Fletcher.

Frank's Rockette was bred in Kentucky and is the daughter of Into Mischief and Indian Charlie mare Rocket Twentyone.

Beau Recall Runs Down Favored Newspaperofrecord In Churchill Distaff Turf Mile

Slam Dunk Racing and Medallion Racing's Beau Recall was impressive late to upset Saturday's Grade 2 Churchill Distaff Turf Mile at odds of 8-1, defending her 2019 title with a late move to pass 1-2 favorite Newspaperofrecord and win by about two lengths on the wire. Ridden by Manny Franco, the 6-year-old daughter of Sir Prancealot covered a mile over firm turf in 1:35.39.

It was trainer Brad Cox's fifth win in the past two days at Churchill Downs, after saddling a pair of maiden special weight winners in Travel Column and Essential Quality, Monomoy Girl to win the G1 La Troienne, and Shedaresthedevil to win the G1 Kentucky Oaks.

“I thought she had a big shot midway down the lane,” said Cox. “She did exactly what Manny (Franco) was instructed to do. He actually did exactly what Irad (Ortiz Jr.) did in the race last year when she won it. The race in California (the Grade II Yellow Ribbon Handicap) she never had a shot. I want to thank those owners for allowing her to run here at Churchill. She loves it here. We sort of knew coming into this week that it could be a big week for our stable. This is our home and to have this sort of weekend on the biggest stage in the sport is really special.”

Ridden for the first time by Javier Castellano, the Chad Brown-trained Newspaperofrecord went straight to the lead out of the gate. She pulled away to an easy two-length lead around the clubhouse turn, setting her own fractions of :23.99 and :47.93 under a moderate hold. Juliet Foxtrot and Belle Laura were up close in second and third, while La Signare, Beau Recall, and Daddy Is a Legend made up the rest of the field.

Rounding the far turn, La Signare was making up a lot of ground on the outside but never appeared to be a threat to the loose-on-the-lead Newspaperofrecord. The heavy favorite pulled away by several lengths at the top of the stretch, but appeared to idle on the front and was caught by the giant late rally of Beau Recall.

Beau Recall blew by Newspaperofrecord in the final sixteenth, crossing the wire about two lengths in front. Newspaperofrecord had to settle for second, with La Signare checking in third. Juliet Foxtrot finished fourth.

“She knows how to get it done,” Franco said. “I just rode her with confidence. I let her have the target in front of us. I was patient until we got in the clear and that's when I asked her to run and she just exploded.”

Bred in Ireland by Tom Wallace, Beau Recall is out of the Great Commotion mare Greta d'Argent. She was a $19,025 yearling at the Tattersalles Ireland sale, and broke her maiden in her home country before shipping to the United States. Under the care of trainer Simon Callaghan, the mare tallied a Grade 2 victory and a trio of graded stakes placings through November of 2018, and then was transferred to trainer Brad Cox.

Beau Recall won a listed stakes at the Fair Grounds, then was entered in the 2019 Keeneland January sale but did not meet her reserve when bidding stopped at $385,000. She returned to the track and racked up wins in the G2 Distaff Turf Mile and G2 Yellow Ribbon in 2019, and this year's edition of the Distaff Turf Mile is her first victory of 2020.

Overall, Beau Recall's record stands at 8-8-0 from 29 starts for earnings of over $1.4 million.

Frank’s Rockette Powers Home in Prioress

The speedy ‘TDN Rising Star’ Frank’s Rockette stalked and pounced her way to a second straight graded tally.

Frank’s Rockette broke on top, but settled off the pace of Hello Beautiful (Golden Lad) as Reagan’s Edge was well-placed in third. The 3-2 favorite took over under a hold before reaching the quarter pole, kicked clear from there and reported home as a much-the-best winner.

“I think we made the right choice [to run in the Prioress],” winning Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott said. “The filly that ran in the Oaks yesterday [Gamine] was very tough in the Test and the extra time helped our filly. She looks good. She looks like she gained some weight and the distance of this race at six furlongs suits us very well. I’m pleased she showed up and ran fast.”

Mott continued, “I thought we might be on the lead. I didn’t see that kind of speed coming from her [Hello Beautiful]. There were several horses in there that could have shown speed. In these sprints, a lot depends on who gets the good break. Our filly broke well, but Hello Beautiful broke exceptionally well and showed good speed as well. Junior [Alvarado] rode her perfectly.”

Runner-up in both the GII Adirondack S. and GI Spinaway S. last summer at the Spa, Frank’s Rockette kicked off her sophomore season with a blowout win in Gulfstream’s Any Limit S. Feb. 22. Second as the favorite in a sloppy renewal of Oaklawn’s Purple Martin S. Apr. 4, she entered riding a two-race winning streak, headed by a narrow decision over Reagan’s Edge in Belmont’s GIII Victory Ride S. going 6 1/2 furlongs last time July 4.

Runaway leader on the general sire list of 2020 by individual black-type winners with 23, Into Mischief got another bolstering of his credentials when Frank’s Rockette moved from the GIII-winning column to the GII-winning column. Overall, Into Mischief has 30 graded winners and 77 career black-type winners. Frank’s Rockette marks the third Into Mischief graded stakes horse produced by an Indian Charlie mare, including this summer’s GIII Schuylerville S. winner Dayoutoftheoffice and 2018 MGISP Rowayton. Indian Charlie’s 63 stakes winners out of his daughters include last year’s champion sprinter Mitole (Eskendereya), who stands alongside Into Mischief at Spendthrift Farm. Frank’s Rockette’s dam, Rocket Twentyone, won the 2011 GIII Arlington-Washington Lassie S. and has produced three stakes horses from three foals. Frank’s Rockette was her last reported foal.

Mystic Guide Strong In The Stretch To Win Jim Dandy Stakes

Appearing to be home free at the top of the stretch, jockey Luis Saez looked over his right shoulder aboard Jesus' Team to check for any potential spoilers. What he saw was a dirt-covered Mystic Guide mounting a charge that would eventually lead him to the winner's circle in the Grade 2 Jim Dandy Stakes on Saturday at Saratoga.

The 3-year-old Ghostzapper colt broke from the outside post, and settled near the back of the six-horse field, two paths off the rail. Longshots First Line and Celtic Striker led the group into the first turn, followed closely in third by Pegasus Stakes runner-up Jesus' Team, and the lead duo separated from the rest as they straightened out to the backstretch in an opening quarter of :23.37 seconds.

First Line led the way across the back straightaway, with Celtic Striker on his outside hip, while Mystic Guide waited patiently in the back of the field. The half-mile went by in :47.61 seconds, and Jesus' Team spent the next quarter-mile lodging a three-wide move to the front.

Jesus' Team was firmly in command at the top of the stretch, but Ortiz had brought Mystic Guide up through the middle of the field in the meantime, and appeared on the outside of the new leader as the eighth-pole drew near. After some right-handed urging by Ortiz, Mystic Guide drew up beside Jesus' Team, who fought on for a few strides before conceding the lead.

Ortiz kept Mystic Guide to task through the final sixteenth, fending off a late charge from Liveyourbeastlife to win by a length. Jesus' Team carried on for third, while betting favorite Dr Post ran an even fourth.

Mystic Guide completed the 1 1/16-mile race in 1:49 flat over a fast main track for owner Godolphin and trainer Michael Stidham. He paid $6.60 to win as the field's second choice.

The Jim Dandy was Mystic Guide's second win in five career starts, and his first victory in stakes competition. Stidham added blinkers to the colt for the Jim Dandy after finishing third in his most recent start, and his stakes debut, a third in the G3 Peter Pan Stakes on July 16 at Saratoga.

A homebred for Godolphin, Mystic Guide is out of the five-time Grade 1-winning A.P. Indy mare Music Note, who also ran under the Godolphin blue.
