Mighty Heart Tries for Encore in Prince of Wales

It’s not often that a double-digit longshot romps by 7 1/2 lengths in a million-dollar race, but that’s the feat Larry Cordes’s Mighty Heart (Dramedy) pulled off in the Queen’s Plate. Sept. 12 at Woodbine. Tuesday, the homebred will look to prove that was no fluke in the second leg of the Canadian Triple Crown, the Prince of Wales S., at Fort Erie.

Bearing out badly in two unsuccessful tries to open his career in the winter at Fair Grounds, Mighty Heart was given nearly four months off and came back as a new horse on Woodbine’s Tapeta surface, running away to a 4 1/4-length graduation at 13-1 July 11. Striking the lead in deep stretch before flattening a bit to finish third Aug. 1, the bay was a pacesetter for the first time in his career in the Queen’s Plate and crushed 13 rivals despite drawing the second-widest post. He drilled an interim half-mile in :47 2/5 (8/18) Sept. 24 at Woodbine to stay on his toes for trainer Josie Carroll, who won the Prince of Wales in 2016 with Amis Gizmo (Giant Gizmo).

Second choice on the morning-line in the nine-horse group is Donato Lanni and Daniel Plouffe’s Clayton (Bodemeister). A dominant first-out victor last November at Woodbine, the $50,000 Keeneland September grad had to be shelved for nearly seven months, but came back with two victories in his first three tries as a sophomore, including a tally in the Plate Trial S. Aug. 15 at Woodbine. Trying Mighty Heart on the far turn of the Queen’s Plate, he proved no match and settled for third.

A neck behind him that day was Ilium Stables’ third choice Tecumseh’s War (Summer Front). Prior to that run, the dark bay beat Mighty Heart despite traffic trouble when finishing second in the aforementioned Aug. 1 allowance in Etobicoke. The lone dual stakes winner in the field, Dotted Line (Signature Red) rates an outside chance. Capturing the Frost King S. and Kingarvie S. as a juvenile, the Norseman Racing Stable colorbearer is looking for his first triumph as a 3-year-old, but was third in both the GIII Marine S. and Plate Trial before fading to seventh in the Queen’s Plate.

Win Win Win Retired Due To Tendon Injury; Stud Plans Pending

Live Oak Plantation's homebred Win Win Win, impressive winner of the Grade 1 Forego Stakes at Saratoga in his most recent start, Aug. 29, has been retired from racing due to a tendon injury.

A versatile 4-year-old son of Grade 1 winner Hat Trick, Win Win Win was rounding into the best form of his career for trainer Michael Trombetta and was targeting a start in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile at Keeneland. Stud plans will be announced at a later date.

“I would like to thank Mike Trombetta and his staff and the Live Oak Stud crew for all the care they gave Win Win Win,” said Charlotte Weber. “He provided us a lot of thrills on the racetrack and I am looking forward to his future as a stallion.”

In a deep and contentious Forego, Win Win Win circled the field at least eight-wide around the turn and finished with a dramatic flourish, going from last to first in the seven-furlong event to win in 1:21.71, leaving in his wake four Grade 1 winners—Complexity, Whitmore, Mind Control, and Firenze Fire.

Last season at three in his sophomore bow, Win Win Win set a new track record at Tampa Bay Downs in winning the Pasco Stakes, an early prep for the G2 Tampa Bay Derby. He drew off with authority in the seven-furlong test, speeding to an eye-catching 7 1/4-length score in the stakes and track-record time of 1:20.89, smashing the previous record of 1:21.40 set by Catalina Red in the 2014 renewal of the Pasco.

Demonstrating his versatility, Win Win Win also annexed the Manila Stakes at one mile on turf at Belmont Park after finishing third in the Tampa Bay Derby and second in the G2 Blue Grass Stakes. In the latter, he picked up 40 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby leaderboard, securing him a spot in the gate for the first Saturday in May. He ultimately finished ninth in the Derby and seventh in the Preakness Stakes before his win in the Manila.

Win Win Win won two of his three starts as a 2-year-old, taking a 6 1/2-furlong maiden special weight at Laurel in his career debut. He crushed allowance foes by 6 1/2 lengths at 5 1/2 furlongs in his next start and concluded his juvenile season with a second-place finish in the seven-furlong Heft Stakes at Laurel.

All told, Win Win Win lived up to his name, capturing five of his 12 starts, placing in four others, and earning $601,600 in his accomplished career. Win Win Win is the seventh Grade 1 winner to represent his sire and he is produced from the winning Smarty Jones mare Miss Smarty Pants, a half-sister to graded stakes winner and multiple graded stakes-placed Unbridled Humor.

Keeneland October Digital Sale Catalog Features Notable Horses Of Racing Age, Yearlings

The catalog for Keeneland's October Digital Sale, to be held Thursday, Oct. 1 as part of Keeneland's new Digital Sales Ring platform, is now available at keenelanddigital.com and features 67 horses of racing age and yearlings.

Among the prominent offerings are:

Saturday Night – 2-year-old filly by Tapit who is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Nickname and is a maiden winner at Indiana Grand on Sept. 15.

Istan Council – 4-year-old filly by Istan who was third in the listed Groupie Doll at Ellis Park on Aug. 9.

Moonshine Dancing – 2-year-old filly by Speightster who won her career debut at Churchill Downs on Sept. 20.

Perfect Happiness – 3-year-old filly by Majesticperfection who was second in her last two starts, both allowance events at Churchill in September.

Lady of Luxury – 4-year-old filly by Mark Valeski who won an allowance event at Indiana Grand on Aug. 4.

Online bidding opens at noon ET on Oct. 1 and closes that day at 6 p.m.

Step 2 – Upon sign in, click MY ACCOUNT and review your current credit limit. Request credit as needed. We recommend you do this prior to the sale day;

Step 3 – Click the DIGITAL SALES RING button in the top right corner to automatically access and participate in the Digital Sale.

Buyers have two options for bidding on the day of the sale:

Direct Bid allows you to bid manually as you go.
Max Bid establishes a top price that you are willing to pay for a hip. As the bidding progresses, the software will automatically bid on your behalf as you are outbid up to your maximum.
