Mischievous Dream Lands Sorority in Dramatic Fashion for Into Mischief

The stellar weekend for Spendthrift Farm stalwart Into Mischief continued with a new stakes winner in Monmouth’s Sorority S. Monday.

Unveiled against New York-breds sprinting at Saratoga, Mischievous Dream closed to win by a length July 19, but could only manage fourth after a wide trip over course and distance in the Bolton Landing S. there Aug. 19. Stepped up to a mile for the first time, the third choice sidled over to the rail and settled in midpack in the full field behind splits of :23.20 and :48.37. Catching all the breaks, she began to make inroads with a quarter mile to travel and was just off the first flight and building momentum when a hole close directly in front of her. Forced to check sharply, jockey Joe Bravo angled her farther out asked her to re-engage the afterburners and she dove in between rivals to win as much the best, showing a sharp burst of acceleration in the process.

“I thought she was very impressive,” said trainer Christophe Clement. “She scared me at the eighth pole [when Bravo had to check severely]. I didn’t know she was good enough to overcome that and make it to the wire first. But I guess she is.”

“We always thought she was a nice filly. She broke her maiden impressively and we saw that she was better than she had done in her last start. She was training very well at Saratoga. That’s why we were trying to be a bit more ambitious with her and it worked out today.”

The 78th black-type winner for her sire, who sired 2020 GI Kentucky Derby hero Authentic Saturday, Mischievous Dream is second winner from five runners for her dual-winning dam. Just Livin a Dream foaled a filly by Practical Joke this year and was bred back to Disco Partner. The winner is a half-sister to the Leroidesanimaux (Brz) gelding Keepthedreamalive, who was SP. Second dam Princesa’s Passion is the dam of MGISW Presious Passion (Royal Anthem), known for his frontrunning tactics, good for two wins in one of Monmouth’s signature races, the GI United Nations S.

Jaw-Dropping Jackie’s Warrior Romps in Runhappy Hopeful

J Kirk and Judy Robison’s Jackie’s Warrior (Maclean’s Music), breathtaking winner of the Aug. 7 GII Saratoga Special S., added another superlative to his resume with a jaw-dropping victory in the GI Runhappy Hopeful S. at Saratoga Monday. Sent off at 9-5, the bay colt was away sharply and almost immediately had a two-length advantage on the field through an opening quarter in :22.56. Pepetu (Dialed In) and even-money favorite Reinvestment Risk (Upstart) were his closest pursuers, but as that duo tried to inch closer, Jackie’s Warrior spurted further clear, covering his next two furlongs in :22.27 for a half up in :44.83. Reinvestment Risk was the only one in with a chance in upper stretch, but Jackie’s Warrior easily shrugged off that foe, getting his next quarter in :23.50 for three-quarters in 1:08.33, before sailing under the wire geared down under a motionless Joel Rosario. He completed the seven furlongs in a stakes-record 1:21.29, bettering the previous mark set by Came Home in 2001 by 0.65 second.

“He broke really fast and I was two lengths in front right away,” Rosario said. “He’s a fast horse. He was able to carry his speed the whole way around. I tried to get off the rail a little bit and it felt like he was comfortable with that. It’s unbelievable the way he ran last time and he was probably better today. He’s a big horse and it looks like he can go longer, too.”

Irad Ortiz, Jr. was aboard runner-up Reinvestment Risk, who was making his second start following a ‘TDN Rising Star’ worthy 7 3/4-length debut win at Saratoga Aug. 1.

“My trip was perfect,” Ortiz said. “He went a little fast, but he kept going. He just got beat by a really nice horse. My horse was only making his second start, so he will improve.”

Jackie’s Warrior was a first-out winner going five furlongs at Churchill Downs, besting subsequent ‘TDN Rising Star’ Therideofalifetime (Candy Ride {Arg}) by 2 1/2 lengths June 19. He had three lengths on that foe while scoring a front-running victory in the Aug. 7 GII Saratoga Special S. last time out, completing that six-furlong race in 1:09.62.

“He’s a very athletic colt that gets over the ground extremely well,” Scott Blasi, assistant to trainer Steve Asmussen, said of the $95,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase. “Steve picked him out for Mr. Robison and it’s been a good partnership over the years. We’re extremely happy to have him. He just continues to improve. He gets stronger in his works. He does things effortlessly. I’d expect he’d go on to the [Oct. 10 GI] Champagne S. [at Belmont Park] and the Breeders’ Cup from there. But, one race at a time. We don’t want to get too far ahead of ourselves.”

Jackie’s Warrior is one of four graded stakes winners for Maclean’s Music, who is also the sire of 2017 GI Preakness S. winner Cloud Computing and 2018 GI Champagne S. winner Complexity. This year, the sire has been represented by GII Best Pal S. third-place finisher Sonic Brees, as well as stakes winner Share the Upside and graded placed Bay Muzik.

John Williams’s J & J Stable claimed Unicorn Girl for $16,000 out of her 54th and final career start at Monmouth Park in July 2013. The 15-year-old mare has a yearling filly by Candy Ride (Arg) and produced a colt by American Pharoah this year. She was bred back to Into Mischief. Her 3-year-old King Theo (More Than Ready), who races for J & J Stable, was fifth in Saturday’s GII American Turf S. at Churchill Downs.

Profitable Filly Tops Relocated Tattersalls Ascot Yearling Sale

The relocated Tattersalls Ascot Yearling Sale witnessed increases across the board, producing a solid final set of key indicators. A total of 203 horses sold for 2,341,350 guineas (US$3,236,736) (+81%) at an average of 11,533 guineas (US$15,943) (+13%) with a median of 8,000 guineas (US$11,059) (+5%).

Lot 135, a filly by Profitable, consigned by Derek Veitch's Ringfort Stud topped the day's trade when selling to Kevin Ross for 58,000 guineas (US$80,184). The filly's page received a notable boost as her second dam Dancing Prize is the grandam of Minzaal, this year's Gimcrack Stakes winner for Owen Burrows.

Lot 225, a colt consigned by Norris Bloodstock, the first crop from Arlington Million winner Mondialiste attracted interest from a number of parties but it was Aidan O'Ryan and Richard Fahey who came out on top securing the colt for 47,000 guineas (US$64,976).

Ringfort Stud also offered Lot 143 an El Kabeir half-sister to this year's Lowther Stakes winner and Ascot Yearling Sale graduate Miss Amulet. The filly caught the imagination of a number of bidders but it was Nick Bell who struck the winning bid of 45,000 guineas (US$62,211) on behalf of his father Michael.

Joe Foley was responsible for purchasing the fourth highest priced lot of the day when signing for Lot 93, a filly offered by Houghton Bloodstock by sire sensation Night of Thunder. Houghton Bloodstock ended the day as leading consignors selling a total of nine lots for 161,000 guineas (US$222,569) at an average of 17,889 guineas (US$24,730).

Peter and Ross Doyle were the leading purchasers on the day securing a total of six lots for an aggregate of 150,000 guineas (US$207,364). Among these purchases was Lot 105, an Ardad filly consigned by Britton House Stud from the family of Sakhee's Secret.

At the conclusion of the sale, Matthew Prior, head of Tattersalls Ascot commented;

“We have witnessed robust trade throughout the day, and it is hugely pleasing to see gains made across the board. Vendors have noticeably increased the quality on offer and have been rewarded with both strong domestic and international participation. Our thanks go to Tattersalls for accommodating the relocated sale to its headquarters in Park Paddocks, along with Great British Racing International who have assisted in the promotion and airport transfers for those traveling from further afield. We look forward to charting the progress of this year's graduates from a sale that goes from strength to strength.”
