Zammit Named ORM Executive Director

Jonathan Zammit has been named Ontario Racing Management’s new Executive Director. Zammit, the former Vice President of Thoroughbred Racing for Woodbine Entertainment, succeeds Katherine Curry who held the position since the formation of Ontario Racing in 2018.

“We are excited to welcome Jonathan’s leadership, experience and financial acumen as we work with all stakeholders to further advance our efforts in sustaining a vibrant and financially sound horse racing industry for decades to come,” said John Hayes, Independent Chair of Ontario Racing’s Board of Directors. “On behalf of Ontario Racing, I would like to thank Katherine for her dedication and hard work in establishing and securing the administration and management of the entire provincial horse racing industry under Ontario Racing.”

ORM is a wholly owned, Woodbine Entertainment subsidiary that implements the approved business plan of Ontario Racing’s Board of Directors.

Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Catalogue Out

A total of 447 yearlings are scheduled to go under the hammer during Part I of the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale, with 183 lots making up Part II, the sales company announced on Thursday. Slated for Sept. 21-23, the catalogue is now available online. Notable graduates include MGSW Rose of Kildare (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}), G3 Albany S. heroine Dandalla (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}) and G2 Airlie Stud S. winner Aloha Star (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}). All horses catalogued for the sale are eligible for the €300,000 Tattersalls Ireland Super Auction Sales Race in 2021.

A Divine Prophet (Aus) half-sister to Dandalla (lot 83) will be offered by Newtownbarry House Stud; while a Mastercraftsman (Ire) half-brother to Aloha Star (lot 4) is consigned by Collegelands Stud. Other lots of interest include: Beechvale Stud’s Mehmas (Ire) half-brother to listed winner Champers Elysees (Ire) (Elzaam {Aus}) (lot 222); a Dandy Man (Ire) colt (lot 276) who is a full-brother to the SP dam of G2 Richmond S. third Lauded (GB) (Acclamation {GB}); Boherguy Stud’s lot 165, a Teofilo (Ire) colt who is a full-brother to G3 Eyrefield S. winner Guaranteed (Ire); lot 337, a Footstepsinthesand (GB) half-sister to G2 Coventry S. runner-up Qaader (Ire) (Night of Thunder {Ire}) from Church View Stables; The Castlebridge Consignment’s lot 118, a Dabirsim (Fr) colt out of a SW full-sister to MGSW &MG1SP Famous Name (GB) (Dansili {GB}); a Highland Reel (Ire) colt (lot 223) out of a full-sister to champion Islington (Ire) (Sadler’s Wells) from the draft of Danesrath Stud; and Baroda Stud’s New Bay (GB) filly (lot 279) from the extended family of European highweight Minding (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

For Part I of the 2019 sale, a son of No Nay Never topped proceedings at €165,000, while the gross was €9,415,500 for 388 yearlings. The average was €24,267 with a median of €20,000.

Zammit was most recently the Vice President, Racing Finance for Woodbine Entertainment. Prior to joining Woodbine Entertainment as the Vice President of Thoroughbred Racing in 2017, Zammit was the Director of Finance for Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment.

“Jonathan brings a wealth of experience in financial management that positions him well to deliver Ontario Racing's strategic plan to grow and sustain the sport of horse racing that supports tens of thousands of jobs throughout the province,” said Jim Lawson, CEO of Woodbine Entertainment and a member of the Ontario Racing Board of Directors. “He will also benefit from the strong foundation that Ontario Racing has built, in large part thanks to the leadership and efforts of Katherine Curry.”

Curry will now solely focus on contributing to Woodbine Entertainment's strategic growth priorities as Vice President of Legal and Compliance and a member of the executive team. Curry has been with Woodbine Entertainment since 2015.

NYRA Schedules Mandatory Payout Of Empire 6 For Aug. 9

The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) announced Thursday that the Sunday, Aug. 9 card at Saratoga Race Course will feature a mandatory payout of the Empire 6, which boasts a jackpot of $1,080,254 heading into Thursday's live racing action at the Spa.

Live coverage of all the races in the sequence will be available with Saratoga Live on FOX Sports and MSG+. Free Equibase-provided past performances will be available for races that are part of the Saratoga Live broadcast and can be accessed at https://www.nyra.com/saratoga/racing/tv-schedule.

The Empire 6 requires the bettor to select the first-place finisher of the final six races of the card. On non-mandatory payout days, if one unique ticket exists, then 100 percent of the net pool, plus the jackpot carryover if applicable, will be paid to the winner. If there is no unique wager selecting the first-place finisher in all six races, then 75 percent of the day's net pool will be distributed to those who selected the first-place finisher in the greatest number of races. The remainder will be added into the jackpot and carried to the next day's Empire 6.

Sunday's card is headlined by the $85,000 Alydar, a nine-furlong test for 4-year-olds and up.
